Anatomija je živa i translatorna disciplina koja integrira istraživanje i edukaciju. Tijekom stoljeća poznavanje anatomije postajalo je sve važnije za medicinske znanosti, posebno za kirurgiju. Za široko i detaljno poznavanje anatomije čovjeka disekcija kadavera nezamjenjiva je metoda jer jedino ona omogućava sigurnu i učinkovitu kliničku praksu. Podučavanje anatomije razvijalo se, kako je vrijeme prolazilo, od naslijeđenih učenja iz prošlosti prema modernoj anatomiji. Znanstveni napredak i promjene u društvu uveli su u nastavu anatomije digitalne alate. Nove metode i digitalne tehnologije daju svoj doprinos obrazovanju budućih liječnika, ali se nikako ne bi trebalo odustati od prakticiranja disekcije kao osnovne metode u podučavanju i učenju anatomije jer je kadaver najbliže pravom pacijentu o kojem će se brinuti budući liječnici. Ovaj rad govori o tome kako se anatomija poučavala na Zavodu za anatomiju Medicinskog fakulteta u Rijeci od osnutka do danas.

In the first half of the 20th century, in most European countries, it was thought that cholinesterase and other drugs that counteract acetylcholine should reduce the manifestations of schizophrenia. In 1937, Fiamberti (1894–1970) introduced the transorbital method of lobotomy which established the use of acetylcholine shock treatment for curing the disturbances of schizophrenia. Accepting the idea that the psychic alterations of schizophrenia were caused by a pathological interruption of nerve conduction at a presumably cortical level, Fiamberti thought he could apply this to the clinical field using the properties of acetylcholine, an acetic ester of choline. Here, we examined, in detail, the contribution of Mario Fiamberti to acetylcholine therapy.

In an era when medicine in Greece was dominated by men, at the end of the 19th and during the first decades of 20th century, two women, Maria Kalapothakes [in Greek: Μαρία Καλαποθάκη] (1859-1941) and Angélique Panayotatou [in Greek: Αγγελική Παναγιωτάτου] (1878-1954), managed to stand out and contribute to the evolution of medicine. Maria Kalapothakes received medical education in Paris and then she returned to Greece. Not only did she contribute to several fields of medicine, but also exercised charity and even undertook the task of treating war victims on many occasions. Angélique Panayotatou studied medicine at the University of Athens and then moved to Alexandria in Egypt, where she specialized in tropical medicine and also engaged in literature. Panayotatou became the first female professor of the Medical School of Athens and the first female member of the Academy of Athens. In recognition for their contributions, Kalapothakes and Panayotatou received medals and honors for both their scientific work and social engagement.

Many things are said and written about famous ophthalmologist Albrecht von Graefe. This work gives detailed description of the places where he lived and practiced ophthalmology in Berlin, because very little was written about it and never in one paper. Von Graefe was born in 1828 in villa Finkenherd in the north-west part of Tiergarten in Berlin. He lived in Behrenstrasse, one of the fashionable streets in Berlin, where he began his ophthalmological practice in 1850. Later, in 1852 he founded a famous private eye clinic in Karlstrasse 46 where he treated numerous eye patients and educated many prominent ophthalmologists and surgeons. Several times he had changed his residence addresses. Among other places, he also stayed in Unter den Linden Avenue and Bellevuestrasse near Potsdamer Platz. In 1868 he became the head of the eye clinic in the Charité Hospital. Since then he lived in a spacious house on Viktoriastrasse until his death in 1870. Although Albrecht von Graefe lived only 42 years, he travelled a lot, but most of his life he spent in the city of Berlin. Graefe made many contributions to ophthalmology being considered the “father of glaucoma” and the nestor of modern ophthalmology.

La beta thalassemia rappresenta una delle più comuni patologie autosomiche recessive nel mondo. I Paesi mediterranei, del Medio Oriente e del Sud Est Asiatico sono regioni ad alta prevalenza di beta thalassemia. Le più alte incidenze sono riportate a Cipro, nel Sud Est Asiatico e in Sardegna, correlate molto probabilmente alla pressione selettiva esercitata dal Pl. falciparum, agente eziologico della malaria. In Sardegna, per la rilevanza sanitaria della patologia e in seguito alla pubblicazione dei primi studi scientifici sul morbo di Cooley, sono fiorite importanti scuole di pediatria e genetica medica, che contribuiranno alla definizione dei criteri diagnostici, della terapia e della prevenzione, anche neonatale, dell’anemia mediterranea e delle emoglobinopatie.

The history of beta thalassaemia in Sardinia

The second half of the 19th century in Fiume (now Rijeka) was characterized by the expansion of industrial activity and trade, and the new wealth resulted in a dynamic social life. As a consequence, many new associations were founded in the city, including the Medical Association in Fiume (Associazione medica fiumana), which was established in 1901. The founding procedure was really fast. On January 10th, 1901, the founding committee delivered four samples of the Statute in Italian and one in Hungarian to the Municipality. These were to be passed on via the Governor's office to the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior for approval. On May 4th, 1901, the governor informed the Municipality about the received approval and returned two copies of the statute to the Association. The founding assembly was held on May 23rd, 1901, in the building of the Municipal School for Boys (Ciotta St. 1). The Association's goals included the improvement of medical knowledge, the protection of professional interests, and the enhancement of communication between colleagues. The first president elected was Dr. Giorgio Catti, who held this position until 1913. The members were divided into two categories: ordinary members, who were residents of the town, and extraordinary members residing elsewhere. The official language was Italian, but lectures and discussions could be conducted in any language. The association ceased its activity with the beginning of World War I.

Reviewing historical medical manuscripts shows that neurological disorders have been previously described in the Islamic Golden Age. Ibn Sina, also known as Avicenna (980-1037 AD), was one of the most renowned scientists during this period. He widely practiced medicine, especially those disorders related to neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry in conventional medicine. In his extant book al-Qānūn fī al-Tibb (the Canon of Medicine), he claimed that some types of brain diseases can be related to the "marāqq" and called them marāqq-related disorders. From Avicenna's viewpoint, "marāqq" is considered a membranous structure in the abdomen. Ibn Sina has illustrated the association between the "marāqq" and the brain through some direct and indirect pathways. As a result, some disturbances in the "marāqq" can influence the brain, which can contribute to the pathogenesis of a number of brain diseases. Accordingly, those patients who regularly had gastrointestinal discomforts experienced a higher prevalence of headache, melancholia, and epilepsy. This study aimed to explore the relationship between abdominal and brain diseases from Avicenna's viewpoint. Furthermore, the definition, clinical manifestation, and therapeutic strategies of marāqq-related disorders were described.

A Historical Overview of the Neurological Disorders Associated with Gastrointestinal Ailments from the Viewpoint of Avicenna

The Spanish flu pandemic is considered the largest and most dangerous epidemic at the beginning of the 20th century affecting most of the world today. The Spanish flu pandemic did not bypass the territory of Croatia (at the time, Croatia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy), nor its southern coastal region of Dalmatia and the city of Split. Using the example of the city Split, the paper analyses the spatial and demographic determinants of population mortality from the Spanish flu between 1918 and 1919, i.e., from March 1918 to April 1919. The paper is based on the data of the Church Death registers kept in the Archbishop’s Archives in Split and newspaper articles. The analysis of the spatial distribution of mortality within urban settlements showed that the number of deaths per urban settlement

Ale and beer brewing and drinking have apparently been part of the human experience since the dawn of civilization. Beer is one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages around the world. It is rich in nutrients such as carbohydrates, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and other compounds. Historically, ale and beer have served as sources of potent nutrient food and have also been used for their medicinal properties. It was believed that the process of fermentation changes simple ingredients such as grain and water into sacred produce, and the introduction of medicinal plants enhances its properties. The earliest records show that in Sumer, beer was used for medicinal purposes as early as 2000 BCE. In the early Middle Ages, ales became popular among the Celts, Germans, and Scandinavians, who were great ale drinkers. Ales were brewed without hops; instead, a specific herb or a combination of herbs called gruit was used for flavouring. Ale and beer were thought to have both magical and medicinal powers, and were often prescribed for medicinal purposes. The introduction of hops revolutionized the brewing and beer trade. Hops improved the quality of beer and gave beer greater durability and protection against bacteria. The aim of the paper is to present the history of ale and beer used for their medicinal properties.
