In this investigation, a grain oriented silicon steel was annealed from a starting state of its primary recrystallized condition by varying time, temperature and heating rate to elucidate the phenomena that occur during the secondary recrystallization growth of Goss grains. Goss secondary recrystallization occurs in a temperature range from 900 to 1000°C. Using a slow rate of heating (5°C/minute) to the annealing temperature yields more scattering in the Goss orientation during the early stages of secondary growth, compared with rapid heating to the annealing temperature in a preheated furnace. Irrespective of the early stage annealing events, after extended annealing to 300 minutes, Goss texture dominates through both rapid and slow heating annealing. Goss growth starts from the sub-surface regions of the sheet, where the concentration of η-fibre grains is high. At a higher annealing temperature (1000°C) faster Goss growth occurs at more frequent sites and, as a result, when the process is completed the average size of Goss grains are smaller than that observed through annealing at 900°C. These investigations were conducted by annealing in an air-circulating furnace followed by extensive orientation measurements through electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) in a field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG SEM) and analysis using a transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Removal of Copper from Molten Steel using FeO–SiO2–CaCl2 Flux

In order to promote utilization of scrap procured in the market and reduction of energy consumption in iron- and steelmaking, it is necessary to develop a practical method of Cu removal. In this study, Cu removal from hot metal by sulfidation of Cu was identified as a potential candidate for industrial use and was investigated in laboratory experiments using ferrous sulfide (FeS) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) as commercially-available fluxes. A laboratory experiment on removal of Cu from hot metal was carried out using a 10 kg-scale furnace. Cu removal occurred while feeding the Na2CO3–FeS fluxes, and stopped after the end of flux feed. In the experimental temperature range, lower temperatures were advantageous for Cu removal, reflecting the exothermic nature of Cu sulfidation. The dependence of Cu removal on the composition of the hot metal was also confirmed based on an analysis focusing on the Cu partition ratio. The difference in the Cu partition ratio in the present study and in the literature, in which pure Na2S was used as a Na source, was interpreted in terms of the optical basicities of the components in the melt.

Fundamental Investigation on Removal of Copper from Molten Iron with Na&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;CO&lt;sub&gt;3&lt;/sub&gt;–FeS Fluxes

Na₂CO₃-FeS熔剂脱除铁水铜的基础研究

The oxidative removal of Cu from carbon-saturated iron via the Ag phase into B2O3 flux was attempted at 1523 K. The Cu content was reduced from 4 to below 0.2 mass%, and Cu in the molten iron could be removed into the B2O3 flux by the method proposed in this study. Furthermore, the Cu distribution ratio between the B2O3 flux and Ag, LCu(flux-Ag) (= [mass% Cu](in flux)/[mass% Cu](in Ag)) and the activity coefficients of Cu2O in the B2O3 flux, γCu2O(in flux), owing to the oxygen partial pressure were measured. The greatest value of LCu(flux-Ag) was found to be 17 at 0.6 atm of oxygen partial pressure. Using this value, the distribution ratio of Cu between the B2O3 flux and carbon-saturated iron is calculated to be 120 at 1523 K. To predict the behavior of solute elements in the Ag phase, a numerical calculation of mass transfer based on Fick's second law is performed and the optimum execution method of oxidative removal of Cu is discussed.

Oxidative Removal of Cu from Carbon-saturated Iron via Ag Phase into B2O3 Flux

The evaporation of Cu and Sn from iron-based melts at reduced pressure has been investigated. The experimentalwork was carried out in a laboratory-scale vacuum induction melting (VIM) furnace. The effects of (1) chamber pressures of 1 to 100 Pa, (2) melt temperatures of 1673 to 1873 K, (3) different melt compositions and (4) two different stirring intensities of the metal bath on the evaporation rate of Cu and Sn, respectively, were studied. It was found that the evaporation of Cu represents a reaction of first order with respect to Cu content of the melt. The evaporation of Sn is represented by a first order rate law, too. Under the same experimental conditions, the evaporation rate of Cu exceeds that of Sn. The rate controlling steps of evaporation are discussed. The optimal conditions of vacuum refining iron melts with respect to Cu and Sn were determined. Recommendations for the design of new vacuum treatment equipment are alsogiven.

Vanadium composite electrogalvanized (Zn–V hydroxide) steel sheets were prepared by electroplating using a horizontal flow cell. The structure of the Zn-V plating layer depended on the flow rate of electrolyte and the current density, and the performance of Zn-V steel sheets depended on the structure of plating films. The Zn-V plating films composed of two-phase structure without cracks showed the high corrosion resistance and high adhesion. The two-phase layer consisted of the field-oriented fiber and non-field oriented texture. The field oriented fiber phase was mainly formed from the amorphous V compound. The V compound in the non-field oriented phase seems to hydrogen evolution during Zn-V composite plating. The Zn-V steel sheets had a black and low-gloss appearance compared to the conventional electrogalvanized steel sheet (EG). Since the V compound in the non-field oriented texture was black and the field oriented texture formed the surface roughness, the lightness and gloss of the Zn-V steel sheets decreased with increasing V content in plating films.

In steel rail production, complex deformations can induce non-uniform changes in cross-sectional profiles along the rail's length, resulting in unevenness and safety implications. It is essential to perform dimensional testing to ascertain compliance with standard requirements. Currently, profile inspection results are manually evaluated, posing efficiency challenges and a lack of standardized criteria.To address this challenge, this paper proposes an online automatic steel rail segmentation and evaluation method (online-ASE) based on pattern matching and complex networks to enable automatic rail profile assessment. This method initially utilizes offline high-dimensional time series data for conducting Toeplitz Inverse Covariance-based Clustering (TICC) training and constructs a standard quality characterization pattern library through distinct inverse covariance structures between abnormal and normal high-dimensional quality characterization indicators of steel rails. When applied online, the Viterbi shortest path dynamic programming algorithm is utilized to match steel rail data with the pattern library, swiftly identifying anomalous rail segments. Additionally, the algorithm computes the contribution of steel rail quality parameters to the segmentation results using complex network betweenness centrality, thereby explaining the reasons for segment formation. These explanations provide a reference basis for subsequent steel rail repairs. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated using real-world steel rail data from a specific steel factory in China.
