This review focuses on control strategies for robotic ankle systems in active and semiactive lower-limb orthoses, prostheses, and exoskeletons. Special attention is paid to algorithms for gait phase identification, adaptation to different walking conditions, and motion intention recognition. The relevant aspects of hardware configuration and hardware-level controllers are discussed as well. Control algorithms proposed for other actuated lower-limb joints (knee and/or hip), with potential applicability to the development of ankle devices, are also included.

Review of control algorithms for robotic ankle systems in lower-limb orthoses, prostheses, and exoskeletons.

Percutaneous insertion is one of the most common minimally invasive procedures. Compared with traditional straight rigid needles, bevel-tipped flexible needle can generate curved trajectories to avoid obstacles and sensitive organs. However, the nonlinear large deflection problem challenges the bending prediction of the needle, which dramatically influences the surgical success rate. This paper analyzed the mechanism of needle-tissue interaction, and established a mechanics-based model of the needle bending during an insertion. And then, a discretization of the bending model was adopted to accurately predict the large bending of the needle in soft tissue. Insertion experiments were conducted to validate the bending prediction model. The results showed that the large needle bending was predicted with the mean/RMSE/maximumu error of 0.42 mm / 0.26 mm / 1.08 mm, which was clinically acceptable. This proved the rationality and accuracy of the proposed model.

A mechanics-based model for predicting flexible needle bending with large curvature in soft tissue

The critical closing pressure (CrCP) of the cerebral circulation indicates the value of arterial blood pressure (ABP) at which cerebral blood flow (CBF) approaches zero. Measurements in animals and in humans, have shown that the CrCP is significantly greater than zero. A simple mathematical model, incorporating the effects of arterial elasticity and active wall tension, shows that CrCP can be influenced by several structural and physiological parameters, notably intracranial pressure (ICP) and active wall tension. Due to the non-linear shape of the complete ABP-CBF curve, most methods proposed for estimation of CrCP can only represent the linear range of the pressure-flow (or velocity) relationship. As a consequence, only estimates of apparent CrCP can be obtained, and these tend to be significantly higher than the true CrCP. Estimates of apparent CrCP have been shown to be influenced by arterial PCO2, ICP, cerebral autoregulation, intra-thoracic pressure, and mean ABP. There is a lack of investigation, under well-controlled conditions, to assess whether CrCP is altered in disease states. Studies of the cerebral circulation need to take CrCP into account, to obtain more accurate estimates of cerebrovascular resistance changes, and to reflect the correct dynamic relationship between instantaneous ABP and CBF.

Stenting of curved arteries is more challenging than straight vessels. There has been an increasing need for new techniques to treat lesions in highly curved locations. One generic idea is to use curved stents to treat lesions in such curved locations. Computational modeling of straight stent crimping which is being used to evaluate the structural performance of the stents has been done vastly in the past. However, there has not been much simulation work on crimping of curved stents due to the challenges associated with applying the boundary conditions. Here we propose a new method to crimp a curved stent to a smaller diameter by incorporating a simple algorithm to generate the required boundary conditions supplementing the finite element (FE) code. To achieve this, a curved crimper is modeled and used to apply crimping loading on the curved stent evaluate its crimpability. Our method provides a simple yet very useful tool which can be implemented in finite element packages to simulate crimping of curved stents using curved crimpers. This method can also be used to expand balloon expandable stents by inflating curved balloons.
