Nationalism and Ethnic Politics

Abstract Subjectivity is an integral component of ethnicity and nationalism and its continued examination remains vital for understanding the appeal that the nation holds for the individual. In this Q methodological study 30 statements regarding attachment to the Basque nation were administered to 31 self‐defined Basques to uncover ways in which that ethnic community identifies with its nation. Following Q sorting and factorial rotation, two distinct forms of national identity emerged: the Active Basque who views the nation in a multifaceted, approving manner while perceiving its existence to be threatened by both external and internal forces; and secondly the Non‐national Basque who also identifies with elements of the Basque collective yet is opposed to the concept of the 'Basque nation'. The national cause, for the Non‐national Basque, is linked to violence and destruction and the nation is rejected as a means of ethnic preservation. These two identity types are interpreted and compared, providing an understanding of subjective national identity in the Basque Country.

To develop a better sense of the strength, nature and evolution of Quebecers' identities and attachments this article examines all publicly available survey research on Quebecers' identity and attachment collected over the last three decades. I conclude that a French Canadian identity has been gradually replaced by a Québécois identity; that this transformation is far from complete, which represents a serious hurdle for nationalist mobilization; that attachment to Canada remains strong (though weaker than attachment to Quebec); and that Quebecers see themselves as members of two tangled, overlapping national communities: Canadian and Québécois, and have rejected calls from intellectuals and nationalist leaders to choose between these two identities.

Hidden Hate: The Resilience of Xenophobia

During 2017 and 2018, we fielded an original survey—the Philippines Power-sharing Survey—of over 3000 respondents in the Mindanao region of the Philippines. The region includes a substantial Muslim population and associated rebel organizations that have been engaged in an effort to advocate for this aggrieved community. Here we present survey results intended to reflect the views of the local population related to physical and economic security. We report three findings that provide insights into perceptions of security in this conflict-prone region. First, the Muslim population of Mindanao perceives greater threats to both their physical and economic security relative to the region's Catholic population. Second, residents of Mindanao do not consider the actors involved in the civil war to be the chief perpetrators of violence and insecurity in their communities. Lastly, respondents appear largely supportive of the view that the efforts to resolve violence in the region through negotiated settlements will result in enhanced security and the improved provision of government services.

Perceptions of Security in the Mindanao Region of the Philippines: Findings from an Original Survey

This article analyzes Hezbollah's mobilization strategy for the participation in the Syrian conflict. It rests on a thematic analysis of 52 speeches of Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah in the period 2011 to 2023 to uncover political patterns in the group's mobilization strategy. It argues that Hezbollah exploited people's fears, important Shia narratives and symbols to foster an incentive structure to step up mobilization for the war in Syria. This mobilization was instrumentally connected to Hezbollah's previous experiences, e.g., conflict against Israel, to highlight continuities in the struggle against the enemy, broadly construed. The article shows that these patterns ensured continuous mobilization to fight "takfiri" groups in Syria, but could also provide avenues for mobilization to future causes. Critical in this process was the credibility of Hassan Nasrallah whose speeches concentrated on the existential risks and threats posed by "takfiri" groups by highlighting problems, suggesting solutions and calling members to action.

In Search for Kazakhstani Identity: Societal Perceptions of Kazakhstan’s Nation-Building

Armed conflict not only causes civilian casualties, but also damages or destroys civilian infrastructure, including cultural heritage sites. Despite the common occurrence of damage to heritage sites during conflict, monitoring is usually done on a case-by-case basis once conflict ends, which leads to delayed and incomplete coverage. The lack of systematic, large-scale, and near real-time monitoring limits research and response efforts intended to help communities recover from conflict. To address this gap, we advance a methodology to systematically identify potential damage to heritage sites during active armed conflict. We use NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) data and information on the location of heritage sites obtained from OpenStreetMap to determine which heritage sites likely suffered damage and when. We describe our methodology and showcase its accuracy in detecting damage to cultural heritage sites. We compare FIRMS predictions to "ground truth" estimates generated from AI-processed moderate resolution satellite imagery of building damage in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. We conclude with a discussion of the uses of this methodology to monitor damage to civilian spaces during armed conflict.
