The International Journal of Crashworthiness is the only journal that covers all aspects of crashworthiness related to road vehicles (including cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles), rail vehicles, aircraft and spacecraft, ships and submarines, as well as land and marine facilities. This journal provides a unique forum for publishing original research and applied studies relevant to scholars, designers, and practicing engineers. The journal welcomes original research papers (both full-length and short communications) and cutting-edge reviews. We invite submissions on material response quality, vehicle body structures, and energy absorption systems under sudden dynamic loads, particularly focusing on new crashworthy structures, innovative concepts for restraint systems, and realistic accident reconstructions.

International Journal of Crashworthiness

This paper presents the results of simulations used to verify the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method for bird-strike simulation and assess the influence of the bird-model shape, internal organ structure and certification configurations by comparing traditional primitive models to a new model based on biometric and published CT-scan data. Initially, a series of analyses and sensitivity studies are performed for traditional models with air porosity which show the Hugoniot pressure, steady-state pressure, impulse and force history data are in close agreement with classical hydrodynamic theory. The new model which includes eight body parts and accounts for variations in density and material strength indicates a lower Hugoniot pressure and increased asymmetry during impact. The results of the new model also show that a bird in a representative flight configuration has a longer impact duration and higher peak impact force when compared to the current folded configuration used in certification testing and simulations.

Development of an advanced multi-material bird-strike model using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) may lose control and collide with other objects in the air, thus causing serious flight safety accidents. In this paper, the impact load and damage mechanism of 4.78 kg quad rotor UAV were studied. First, the accurate numerical model of UAV was established in the explicit dynamic analysis software LS-DYNA. Then the overall drop simulation and test of UAV with two different heights were carried out. Finally, the results were compared and analyzed. The high coincidence of experimental results and simulation results showed that the calculation method and simulation model are reasonable. On this basis, the impact load and damage of UAV in different speeds, heading angles and pitch angles were simulated and analyzed. The results revealed that the heading angle, pitch angle and velocity of UAV during collision have a significant effect on the impact load between UAV and the impacted object. It also affected the damage degree of UAV itself. In the collision, the arm of the UAV tended to break at the position joined to the fuselage. The battery hanging on the fuselage was also liable to separate from the fuselage. The research results of this paper have a certain guiding significance for the formulation of UAV safe flight airworthiness regulations.

Research on dropping test and numerical simulation for unmanned aerial vehicle

无人机跌落试验与数值模拟研究

Occupant restraint systems (ORS) play an integral and critical role in protecting occupant safety. However, research on optimising ORS in reclined postures in autonomous vehicles is still insufficient. This study aimed to conduct multiobjective optimisation of the ORS to explore potential occupant injury reduction capability. Firstly, the MADYMO simulation method quantitatively correlates the relevant parameters of the ORS with occupant injuries. Then, parameters that significantly impact the safety performance of the ORS (pretensioning time, pretensioning force, webbing stiffness, seatbelt limiter force, and explosive pretensioning time) were selected as design variables. The occupant's comprehensive injury evaluation criterion, WIC, was used as the optimisation criteria. The ORS parameters were optimised by combining the Latin hypercube experimental design, the Kriging surrogate model, and the NSGA-II optimisation algorithm. The results show that after optimisation, the occupant's head injury criteria (Chead) decreased by 10.87%, neck injury criteria (Cneck) decreased by 14.18%, chest injury criteria (Cchest) decreased by 8.43%, lumbar spine injury criteria (Clumbar) decreased by 2.37%, and the comprehensive weighted injury criterion (WIC) decreased by 8.14%. This study significantly reduced injuries to various parts of the occupant, thereby improving the safety of occupants in reclined postures.
