Objectives Social isolation has subjective and objective dimensions. This study explored the change trajectories of both dimensions of isolation and depressive symptoms and their interrelationships in terms of levels and changes over time.Methods Data were drawn from the 2006–2018 Health and Retirement Study, involving a nationally representative sample of middle-aged and older adults (N = 7890). Parallel process latent growth curve models were used.Results Over time, objective isolation displayed a non-linear upward trend, subjective isolation displayed a non-linear downward trend, and depressive symptoms remained relatively stable. More objectively isolated people experienced smaller increases in objective isolation and more subjectively isolated people experienced smaller decreases in subjective isolation. Such negative intercept-slope associations were not observed for depressive symptoms. Net of sociodemographic characteristics, physical disabilities, functional limitations, and chronic diseases, each isolation dimension was associated with the level of depressive symptoms. But only the rate of change in subjective isolation was positively associated with that of depressive symptoms.Conclusion The initial level of objective isolation may be one of the common origins of subjective isolation and depressive symptoms. Recognition of such shared origins is important in mitigating the synergistic and deleterious effects of loneliness and depression in middle-aged and older adults.

Trajectories of social isolation and depressive symptoms in mid- and later life: a parallel process latent growth curve analysis

Objectives: Poor social connections may be associated with poor cognition in older people who are not experiencing mental health problems, and the trajectory of this association may be moderated by cognitive reserve. However, it is unclear whether this relationship is the same for older people with symptoms of depression and anxiety. This paper aims to explore social relationships and cognitive function in older people with depression and anxiety.Method: Baseline and two-year follow-up data were analysed from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study–Wales (CFAS-Wales). We compared levels of social isolation, loneliness, social contact, cognitive function, and cognitive reserve at baseline amongst older people with and without depression or anxiety. Linear regression was used to assess the relationship between isolation and cognition at baseline and two-year follow-up in a subgroup of older people meeting pre-defined criteria for depression or anxiety. A moderation analysis tested for the moderating effect of cognitive reserve.Results: Older people with depression or anxiety perceived themselves as more isolated and lonely than those without depression or anxiety, despite having an equivalent level of social contact with friends and family. In people with depression or anxiety, social isolation was associated with poor cognitive function at baseline, but not with cognitive change at two-year follow-up. Cognitive reserve did not moderate this association.Conclusion: Social isolation was associated with poor cognitive function at baseline, but not two-year follow-up. This may be attributed to a reduction in mood-related symptoms at follow-up, linked to improved cognitive function.

Social isolation, cognitive reserve, and cognition in older people with depression and anxiety

In the community-based cross-sectional study, we investigated patterns of lifestyle activities among older people and examined the association between specific types of lifestyle activity and depressed mood status. The participants were 656 men and women aged 65 or older in 2004 who lived in a rural town in Japan, neither institutionalized nor hospitalized and who did not have symptoms of dementia. We found that less interaction with neighbors, society and friends was highly associated with depressed mood for men. Additionally, although they were physically active in gardening/farming, it did not necessarily mean that they were mentally healthy if they did not have close ties with friends, family and children/grandchildren. For women, it seemed important to engage in several types of activities relating to society, leisure and children/grandchildren to be in less depressed mood. Even if they were socially inactive, if they had frequent contact with family and children/grandchildren or going out for pleasure they were less likely to be depressed. Distinguishing gender differences in lifestyle activity patterns and the association of activities with depressed mood will help to guide the development of depression intervention programs.

Association between lifestyle activity and depressed mood among home-dwelling older people: A community-based study in Japan

Objective The aim was to synthesise the current qualitative literature on the impact of Parkinson’s on the couple relationship, including individual and dyad studies.Methods Noblit and Hare’s meta-ethnography approach was applied; 19 studies were included in the review following a systematic search of four electronic databases. The studies included experiences of 137 People with Parkinson’s and 191 partners.Findings Analysis produced three themes: (1) Disruption of roles and responsibilities; (2) Challenges to communication and closeness; and (3) Grief, burden, and isolation. The themes are discussed with supporting extracts from the 19 included studies.Conclusion The findings highlight the challenges that couples experience and the individual and relational resources that support coping. Support should be individually tailored to each couple as the impact on the couple may change in response to individual and contextual factors. This review adds further evidence to the case for relationally focused multidisciplinary team input at all stages of Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s and the couple relationship: a qualitative meta-synthesis

AbstractObjectives: This study had three objectives. First, to determine the extent to which demographic factors, perceived social support, and Chinese cultural beliefs predict attitudes toward mental health help seeking; second, to assess mental health utilization; and third, to assess intentions to utilize mental health services among older Chinese immigrants in Canada aged 55 and above.Method: A total of 149 older Chinese adults (M = 73.92 years, SD = 9.99, range = 55–95 years) completed a semi-structured interview protocol in Cantonese or Mandarin. Demographic and health information were collected, and questionnaires assessing perceived social support, mental health help-seeking attitudes, and belief in Chinese culture and values were administered.Results: Demographic and health information, perceived social support, Chinese cultural beliefs and values accounted for 21.8% of the variance in help-seeking attitudes. Descriptive data related to mental health utilization and intentions are provided.Conclusion: Older Chinese participants exhibited less positive attitudes that were significantly associated with Chinese cultural beliefs and values.
