Measuring Business Excellence

Purpose Following Agenda 2030, the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into banking strategies has become essential for promoting global sustainability and responsible financial practices. This study aims to examine how the financial characteristics of banks influence their efforts towards achieving the SDGs. Design/methodology/approach A fixed-effect panel regression is used to analyse a sample of 646 publicly listed banks across 61 countries, observed from 2018 to 2023. The data are sourced from the Refinitiv Eikon database, with the dependent variable pertaining to the SDGs calculated as a composite score. Findings Empirical results show that larger and less profitable banks reach better performance in terms of contribution to the SDGs. Instead, the level of leverage does not appear to be a significant influential factor in fostering the support of the SDGs. Originality/value Theoretically, this work enriches the academic literature on SDG performance and confirms the relevance of stakeholder theory. Managerially, this study provides valuable insights for banks integrating the SDGs into their business models and for policymakers identifying strategies to encourage sustainable practices.

Answering the call to action: an empirical analysis of SDG performance in global banks

Purpose The paper aims to explore and explain sustainable behaviours in an organizational context using self-determination theory, suggesting that individuals are likely to be engaged in green practices when supported by their needs. Design/methodology/approach The study used three waves of longitudinal design, consisting of 702 executives in leadership roles across public and private companies with an average of 15–20 years of work experience. Professionals working throughout PAN India, the USA, Germany and Australia provided us with the data. Findings Green transformational leaderships play a pivot in fostering optimism in employees when recrafting their work. Employees being encouraged to evaluate their jobs within the organization’s capacity would bring meaningful change and envision a sustainable future. All the study hypotheses were supported, highlighting the importance of green-focused leadership with individual agencies in line with the organization’s green values. Practical implications Using sustainable practices advances organizations in providing green commitment through leadership. Implementing this in the organization can help achieve long-term success by ensuring sustainable practices are embedded in culture rather than a peripheral initiative promoting sustainable decision-making and behaviours. Originality/value The study provides insights into the factors influencing decisions to maintain and adopt sustainable practices by providing a deeper understanding of green behaviour change and strategies for promoting pro-environmental strategies in organizations.

Understanding green behaviours through the lens of self-determination theory

Purpose This study aims to analyze the determinants of circular economy (CE) initiatives based on the performance related to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of firms operating in the Oil and Gas (O&amp;G) sector. In detail, adopting a stakeholder–agency theory lens, this study explores the relationship between corporate governance and CE performance measured through SDGs. Specifically, the research aims to highlight how corporate governance attributes could affect firms’ ability to implement CE practices and – in turn – reach a higher SDG performance. Design/methodology/approach A global sample of firms operating in the O&amp;G sector has been selected from the Thomson Reuters Refinitiv Eikon database. To test the research hypotheses, an SDG-based CE performance index has been developed. Subsequently, an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model is carried out to explore the impact of the following variables on the CE performance index: board size, board gender diversity, board independence and corporate social responsibility (CSR) committee. Findings The results highlight that the board size and the presence of a CSR committee positively influenced SDG-based CE performance. However, board gender diversity does not have a significant impact on CE performance in relation to the SDGs, whereas board independence appears to exert a negative effect. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study represents the first research that systematically addresses CE performance based on SDGs in the O&amp;G industry, providing implications for the sector from both theoretical and managerial points of view.

Fueling the circular transition: an empirical exploration of sustainable development goal performance in the oil and gas industry

Purpose Building a robust cold chain logistics system boosts the company’s profits in various ways. Any cold chain logistics company needs well-organised and efficient management of cold chain logistics to produce high-quality products, ensure that the product reaches the customer without any changes to the quality, and do so promptly. This paper aims to identify factors influencing cold chain logistics performance design. These factors are further helpful in analysing the behaviour intentions of stakeholders on increasing the cold chain logistic performance. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a thorough literature review to identify the variables that affect the performance of the cold chain logistics design. The factors were identified using exploratory factor analysis and empirically analysed using confirmatory factor analysis. The study also used structural equation modelling (SEM) to examine cold chain logistics performance determinants. Data was collected from 380 respondents working in the cold chain. Findings This study selected the factors influencing CCL performance, including five main factors and 22 sub-factors. Distribution, warehouse inventory storage, quality, demand, and technology affect the CCL’s performance. The results confirmed the theoretical model and proved that the factors significantly positively impact CCL performance. Research limitations/implications Future studies should focus on actual case studies to confirm the usefulness of the parameters found, examine how they affect performance growth, provide important insights into how to improve overall business performance and assist in identifying crucial research hotspots. Practical implications The study provides insight into issues regarding performance development in cold chain logistics for various stakeholders associated with the cold chain logistics industry, including practical managers, academics, and consultants. It also argues in favour of giving problems with CCL performance a higher priority. Policymakers interested in the service sector, like the Indian Department of Commerce and MSMEs, make up a modest additional audience for this work. Social implications Indian meat industry can be organised by implementing this methodology. This work benefits the government to get more transparent transaction and data digitalisation, which comes into account of GST. Originality/value There is a lack of significant quantitative literature suggesting modification strategies for factors affecting processed meat and chicken products in storage and transportation levels in India. Thus, this work tried to fill this gap and add the food chain logistics literature that helps practitioners and scholars enhance the food supply chain in developing countries.The framework developed for this study is where its originality lies. A detailed examination of cold chain logistics is included in the paper.

Cold chain logistics performance: a framework

Purpose Child labour abolition is one of the four essential human rights identified by the International Labour Organisation and sustainable development goals. Although public organisations and governments have implemented a variety of actions to control business activity and protect children’s rights, cases of child labour adoption continue to be documented. This paper aims to establish multinational companies’ disclosure procedures regarding child labour and to identify some potential determining factors. Design/methodology/approach A content analysis approach is used on sustainability reports from multinational companies throughout the world to assess the overall amount of disclosure concerning child labour adoption and to generate a child labour disclosure (CLD) score. In addition, to better understand this issue, an empirical investigation was conducted on a sample of 85 multinational companies to identify the factors that influence CLD. Findings The findings show that there is a low degree of disclosure on this issue throughout the world and that stakeholder engagement has a positive impact on disclosure levels. In contrast, the existence of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) committee and a CSR-based compensation policy has a negative influence on CLD. Originality/value The statistical results provide a unique viewpoint as they illustrate the amount of CLD using impression management theory, confirming the notion of negative event omission and text manipulation in developing the business image. These findings have important implications for literature development, as well as for managers, policymakers and stakeholder groups.

Exploring influences on child labour disclosure: the role of sustainability policies and stakeholder engagement

Purpose Creating, enhancing and sustaining a culture of quality is critical to business continuity and sustainability. It is necessary to study the enablers and motivators, specifically excellence in building work teams and its relationship to the culture of quality. This study aims to examine excellence in team building in terms of understanding the team’s mission, team characteristics and accountability in engineering industries companies in Jordan. It also investigated the level of quality culture in these companies and the relationship between excellence in team building and quality culture. Design/methodology/approach The variables of this study were measured through a questionnaire distributed to quality managers in engineering industries companies in Jordan. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: excellence in team building (understanding of team mission, characteristics of team members, accountability) and quality culture. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive (means and standard deviations) and inferential statistics ( t test and regression). Findings The results indicated that the level of excellence in team building, understanding of the team mission, characteristics of team members and accountability and the level of quality culture fall within the “very good” point range on the scale. The results also indicated a statistically significant positive relationship between team building excellence and quality culture. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first applied study that addressed excellence in team building, investigated the level of quality culture and the relationship between team building excellence and quality culture. The results support the role of team building excellence in creating, enhancing and sustaining a culture of quality.
