The interior temperature of the massive concrete should be controlled to avoid cracks caused by the trapped hydration heat. In this paper, an enhanced heat transfer pipe array with spiral fins (PSF) is proposed to reduce the interior temperature of concrete blocks. Numerical simulations of massive concrete blocks embedded with traditional cooling water pipe (TCWP) and newly proposed PSF were conducted to investigate the interior temperature distribution of massive concrete. Meanwhile, validity of the finite element model was verified by both theoretical results and available experimental data. Based on the calculated temperature distribution of the points located in the interior area of the massive concrete, it is shown that when the TCWP was replaced by the PSF, the interior temperature can be significantly reduced. Therefore, compared to the TCWP, the proposed PSF has excellent heat transfer performance for cooling the interior temperature of massive concrete.

Visual recognition of 3D point cloud data of bridge inspection scenes is a key step in automating the visual inspection process, which is currently largely manual and inefficient. To alleviate the lack of large-scale annotated point cloud datasets for training such 3D visual recognition algorithms, this research investigates an approach for developing large-scale synthetic point cloud datasets. The proposed approach proceeds in four steps: (1) random generation of different types of bridges in computer graphics environments; (2) sampling of camera trajectories that represent data collection scenarios during bridge inspection; (3) 3D reconstruction using Structure from Motion (SfM) applied to rendered synthetic images; (4) automated annotation of the reconstructed point cloud using ground truth masks obtained with synthetic images. Besides, this research proposes to store point uncertainty information defined by the error between the ground truth depth and the depth calculated from the SfM results. Prior to training, thresholds can be applied to this uncertainty information to control the levels of outliers in the dataset. This research demonstrates the proposed approach by generating point cloud datasets for two data collection scenarios. The effectiveness of the generated datasets is investigated by training 3D semantic segmentation algorithms and evaluating the performance on real and synthetic point cloud data. The proposed approach for point cloud dataset generation will facilitate the development of generalizable and high level-of-detail 3D recognition algorithms toward autonomous bridge inspection.

Development of large-scale synthetic 3D point cloud datasets for vision-based bridge structural condition assessment

Due to its structural efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness, ultra-high performance concrete was utilized to build the first highway overpass bridge in China. The bridge was made of prestressed ultra-high performance concrete box girders of four continuous spans of 30 m each. As the original design of such bridge was observed to be somewhat conservative, its cross-sectional dimensions, in the form of the box girder wall thicknesses were optimized in this research to lower the material cost in future bridge construction. Then, a full-scale simply supported ultra-high performance concrete box girder of 30 m span, incorporating the new box girder wall thicknesses, was fabricated and then tested under static loading to obtain research data to justify the revised design. The loading system was designed to examine the flexural behavior of the girder using two concentrated loads symmetrically located at the mid-span. Experimental results show that the optimized girder has a favorable ductile behavior and excellent flexural strength, which can meet the design requirements for serviceability and ultimate limit states. A finite element model of the tested girder was developed, using ABAQUS software, and then was verified using the experimental findings. A parametric study was then conducted to investigate the influence of key parameters on the structural response, namely, the reinforcement ratio, the number of the prestressing wires, and the web thickness. Recommendations on minimum and maximum compressive strength and tensile property of ultra-high performance concrete were proposed. Also, a simplified calculation method of prestressed ultra-high performance concrete box girder was developed based on a verified strain and stress diagrams for cross-sectional analysis. The proposed methodology can be used in future practice with confidence.

Full-scale bending test and parametric study on a 30-m span prestressed ultra-high performance concrete box girder

Rotational inertia damper, a novel damper, possessing the advantage of displacement amplification, has been employed in outrigger system for seismic mitigation. The equivalent analysis model composed by a uniform cantilever beam and an equivalent spring was proposed to simulate the rotational inertia damper outrigger system, by which the corresponding dynamic characteristic equation was derived based on numerical assembly technique. To gain the response of the damped system, finite element method and state space method have been utilized. Finally, the results show that the pseudo-undamped natural frequency ratios and system modal damping ratios are significantly influenced by stiffness parameter of the exterior column, while the mass parameter of the rotational inertia damper has little effect on them. The optimal damping ratio can be acquired for one mode, but it may be worse for the other mode in the same position equipping rotational inertia damper. Furthermore, numerical simulation results for the typical earthquake records have verified that the rotational inertia damper outrigger has excellent control performance in displacement as well as acceleration. A good agreement between damping force and equivalent force also suggests that the damping force of rotational inertia damper is predominant and the inertial force has no significant effect on the structure.

A novel energy dissipation outrigger system with rotational inertia damper

A traditional reinforcing detail—hooked bars anchored in the joint core—for the bottom bars in precast beams was improved by using small-diameter high-strength bars to reduce the steel congestion in the cast-in-place connection zone. Five full-scale beam-to-column connections, including a monolithic specimen, were tested under reversed cyclic loading. The primary test variables were the type of beam longitudinal bars, manner of roughening the inner surface of the precast U-shell, presence or absence of the small-diameter stirrups inside the U-shell, and height of the precast columns. An analysis of the strength, ductility, stiffness, and energy dissipation showed that the proposed connection exhibited a comparable, although slightly inferior, seismic performance relative to the monolithic connection. Among the precast specimens, the existence of additional stirrups slightly improved the total performance. The use of high-strength steel bars as beam top longitudinal bars further decreased the loading capacity and energy dissipation. The air bubble film technique used to roughen the interfaces ensured the structural integrity.

Development and testing of precast concrete beam-to-column connections with high-strength hooked bars under cyclic loading

The bond behaviors of recycled aggregate concrete-filled steel tube (RACFST) stub columns after exposure to high temperatures were investigated based on the push-out experimental tests of 36 heated and six unheated RACFST specimens. The influences of five variable parameters, that is, temperature level, replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), cross-section type, concrete strength and interface length, on the bond strength and bond stress-slip curves were discussed. Results suggest that the bond stress-slip curves of push-out RACFST specimens at high temperature differ from those at ambient temperature. Additionally, the bond strength was found to increase with increasing temperature. The bond strength at a high temperature of 800°C is about 3 times higher than that at room temperature. The bond strength can be increased up to 2.6 times after high temperature with the same RAC replacement ratio. Based on the experimental results, regression analysis was conducted to develop a bond strength model to predict the bond behavior between recycled aggregate concrete and steel tube after exposure to high temperatures.

Bond behaviour of RACFST stub columns after exposure to high temperatures

The impact of high-temperature exposure on the residual bond behavior between deformed steel bars and concrete is a critical aspect that affects their composite interaction and the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) members after fire events. This paper presents an analytical method to predict the residual bond behavior and failure modes of steel bars embedded in concrete after exposure to high temperatures. The concrete cover is modeled as a thick-walled cylinder with the inner surface under uniform pressure. During the loading process, the concrete cover is divided into two portions: an intact outer portion and a cracked inner portion. The material properties of both steel and concrete, along with the tension-softening characteristics of the cracked inner portion, are well-defined in the analytical method. Simplified equations are developed to estimate the maximum radial stresses, residual bond strength and interfacial slip parameters, which together define the bond-slip relationship at the steel bar-to-concrete interface after high-temperature exposure. The accuracy and validity of these simplified equations are extensively verified by comparing the predictions obtained from these simplified equations with corresponding analytical results, experimental data from the literature and the load-displacement curves predicted by the proposed finite element model.

Local bond-slip model between steel bars and concrete after exposure to high temperatures

To investigate the effectiveness of selected repair materials and reinforcement methods on the shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with corroded stirrups, 14 RC beam specimens were designed with corroded stirrups exhibiting weight loss rates of 10% and 17%. Additionally, control specimens without repairs were included to assess the impact of pre-corroded stirrups on strength development. A three-point bending test was conducted to evaluate the shear strength of the specimens under various repair and reinforcement scenarios. Epoxy mortar, cement mortar, and non-shrinkage cement mortar were selected as repair materials, while spot-welded steel wire mesh (WWM) and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) were used to enhance repair effectiveness. The results indicate that, for the specimens with corroded stirrups showing weight loss rates of 10% and 17%, their shear strengths decreased by up to 17% and 21%, respectively, compared to specimens without any corrosion. Additionally, the shear strengths of the specimens repaired using epoxy mortar were slightly increased by reinforcing with WWM and CFRP. However, the shear strengths of most specimens with repair and reinforcement were lower than their original shear strengths. For practical design applications, this work introduces a novel approach to quantifying the effectiveness of repair materials in conjunction with reinforcement methods, based on the softened strut-and-tie model (SST), which was verified using experimental data.

Experimental investigation of the corrosion effect and repair effectiveness for an RC beam with the corroded stirrups

This study proposes a machine learning algorithm-based model for flexural capacity of corroded prestressed concrete (PC) structures, which considers the feature parameters including geometric parameters, material parameters and corrosion parameters. First, three black box models are utilized to predict the flexural capacity of corroded PC structures. Then, the sensitivity of feature parameters to the flexural capacity is quantified using the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) additive model, and the model’s key features parameters are extracted. Following this, a practical model is established using Genetic Programming (GP) based on these key feature parameters. The model is verified and compared with the existing models. The results show that the interpretable machine learning model can quantify the influence of the feature parameters on the flexural capacity and obtain the feature importance ranking. The model can fit the calculation formula for the flexural capacity of corroded PC beams by symbolic regression method, which effectively reveal the potential nonlinear relationship between basic feature and flexural capacity. The accuracy and interpretability of the calculation formula are between the existing empirical model and black box models.

Practical model for flexural capacity of corroded PC structures based on interpretable machine learning

The aim of this paper is to investigate the bond-slip behavior and model of sand-coated deformed glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars embedded in ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). For this purpose, a total of 24 pull-out specimens were tested to failure, varying embedded lengths (2 d b ,3 d b ,4 d b and 5 d b , where d b represents the diameter of the bar) and steel fiber volume fractions (1% and 2%). It was observed that as the embedded length or fiber volume fraction increased, the failure mode changed from progressive pull out of GFRP bars (pullout failure) to rupture of GFRP bars (rupture failure). Both modes of bond failure experienced damage at GFRP-UHPC interface due to the delamination of the outside layer of GFRP bars. The bond-slip response of GFRP bars exhibited four stages: micro slip stage, ascending stage, descending stage, and residual stage. The bond strength of GFRP bars embedded in UHPC exhibited an increasing trend with the fiber volume fraction, while it demonstrated a declining trend with the increasing embedded length. For specimens with fiber volume fraction of 1% and 2%, the bond strength decreased by 24.4% and 8.0%, respectively, as the embedded length increased from 2 d b to 4 d b . In addition, a database consisting of 200 bond specimens including 24 test specimens from this study was established to statistically derive a bond strength equation for GFRP bars embedded in UHPC. Furthermore, a bond-slip model was proposed to describe the bond-slip behavior of sand-coated deformed GFRP bars embedded in UHPC.
