The Journal of African Cultural Studies publishes cutting-edge scholarship on African culture, welcoming contributions from both within and outside Africa, with a special emphasis on Africa-based authors and their languages. Our editorial policy encourages interdisciplinary research, encompassing the humanities, including environmental humanities. The journal focuses on various dimensions of African culture, including performance arts, visual arts, music, cinema, the role of media, the relationship between culture and power, as well as issues related to popular culture in Africa and sociolinguistic topics of cultural interest. We particularly welcome articles that demonstrate an understanding of local life and showcase local knowledge and linguistic competence. We do not publish articles that primarily offer textual analyses of cultural products such as novels and films, nor those that are mainly historical or based predominantly on secondary sources (such as digital and library resources). The journal evolved from the African Languages and Cultures journal, founded in 1988 in the Department of the Languages and Cultures of Africa at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. Since 2019, it has been published in association with the International African Institute, London. The Journal of African Cultural Studies publishes original research articles and occasionally features a Contemporary Conversations section, where authors respond to current issues. This section includes reviews, interviews, and invited response or position papers. We welcome proposals for future themes in the Contemporary Conversations section.

Those examples are references to articles in scholarly journals and how they are supposed to appear in your bibliography.

Not all journals organize their published articles in volumes and issues, so these fields are optional. Some electronic journals do not provide a page range, but instead list an article identifier. In a case like this it's safe to use the article identifier instead of the page range.
