Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 is one important approach to alleviate greenhouse gas emission and energy crisis, which has gained huge attention in the past decades. However, the lack of understanding complex reaction mechanism impedes new catalysts design. It is also very difficult to understand the mechanism by using only experimental approaches. For this concern, theoretical calculations can effectively supplement the experimental deficiency and thus play an important role. Recently theoretical calculations have been performed on adsorption, migration and reduction of CO2 molecule on the photocatalyst surface, leading to useful information that have contributed greatly to this field. This review summarizes recent advances in first-principles calculations about CO2 photoreduction over various semiconductor photocatalysts like metal oxides, sulfides and g-C3N4. The methods, models, adsorption and reaction pathways have been discussed in detail. The perspective about future investigation on the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 using first principles calculations is also presented.

Single-molecule fluorescence photoswitching: Design and synthesis of photoswitchable fluorescent molecules

This review provides the reader with a general overview on heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation mechanisms in the presence of TiO2, with a special address to conversion of aliphatic and aromatic organic species. The aim was to clarify the steps of the photo-oxidation of the various classes of compounds and to relate them with the properties of the catalysts and the experimental conditions used. Reactions carried out to perform complete degradation and photocatalytic partial oxidations have been deeply discussed. Recent isotopic studies highlighted new reaction pathways concerning partial oxidation of alcohols to aldehyde and oxidation of benzene while EPR investigations confirmed that not only the photogenerated hole but also the OH radicals are involved in the oxidation of the substrates.

Overview on oxidation mechanisms of organic compounds by TiO2 in heterogeneous photocatalysis

I–III–VI multinary semiconductors, which have low toxicity, are attracting much attention as quantum dot (QD) materials for replacing conventional binary semiconductors that contain highly toxic heavy metals, Cd and Pb. Recently, the inherent design flexibility of multinary QDs has also been attracting attention, and optoelectronic property control has been demonstrated in many ways. Besides size control, the electronic and optical properties of multinary QDs can be changed by tuning the chemical composition with various methods including alloying with other semiconductors and deviation from stoichiometry. Due to significant progress in synthetic methods, the quality of such multinary QDs has been improved to a level similar to that of Cd-based binary QDs. Specifically, increased photoluminescence quantum yield and recently narrowed linewidth have led to new application fields for multinary QDs. In this review, a historical overview of the solution-phase synthesis of I–III–VI QDs is provided and the development of strategies for better control of optoelectronic properties, i.e., electronic structures, energy gap, optical absorption profiles, and photoluminescence feature, is discussed. In addition, applications of these QDs to luminescent devices and light energy conversion systems are described. The performance of prepared devices can be improved by controlling the optical properties and electronic structures of QDs by changing their size and composition. Clarification of the unique features of I–III–VI QDs in detail will be the base for further development of novel applications by utilizing the complexity of multinary QDs.

Abstract This paper reviews recent advances in chemical applications of optical trapping of single microparticles in solution, with special reference to microspectroscopy (absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy), interfacial processes across microdroplet/solution interfaces, and photochemical reactions in microdroplets. After describing the principles and experimental setups of optical trapping of single microparticles, recent topics of chemical applications of the techniques are described. The work on optical trapping-electrochemical measurements of single microdroplets is also summarized. In particular, this review focuses on demonstrating the characteristics of chemical processes in micrometer dimensions, i.e., “microchemistry”.
