The aim of the present study was to characterise carcass weights of the European fallow deer harvested during the hunting seasons 2001/2002–2004/2005 in four provinces of northern Poland. The average carcass weights of bucks, does and fawns harvested throughout the study period in the given area were 48.81 kg, 32.51 kg and 20.79 kg, respectively. Carcass weights of the fallow deer were found to be higher in provinces with a high percentage of farmland and lower in provinces with a high percentage of woodland area. In fall and winter carcass weights of bucks and fawns fluctuated: the highest body weights of bucks and fawns were recorded in October (65 kg) and December (25 kg), respectively. However, there were no considerable changes observed in body weights of does. Carcass weights of bucks and fawns were temperature-dependent, while precipitation totals affected only carcass weights of the youngest animals.

Effect of Harvesting Time and Area on Carcass Weight of the European Fallow Deer (Dama damaL.)

Zooplankton communities of the Daugava River were investigated in two river stretches: the river stretch from Surozha in Belarus to Dunava in Latvia in 2008 and the Kraslava–Dunava stretch in 2005–2009. Samples of zooplankton were collected at the right and left banks as well as in the middle of the river. The comparison of the results obtained with findings of the studies performed in similar sections of the Daugava River in 1956–1966 shows that the total number of zooplankton taxa in 2005–2009 has decreased by 48 taxa. Relevant changes have been recorded in the structure of taxa. The observed tendency for the total amount of zooplankton and species diversity to decrease is probably due to the changing hydrological situation in the Daugava drainage basin and long-term climate changes.

Changes in Structure of Zooplankton Communities in the Middle Daugava (Western Dvina) Over the Last Five Decades

Spiders of the genus Murricia Simon, 1882 (Araneae: Hersiliidae) from India were studied based on freshly collected material from different localities of the Andhra Pradesh state. The study resulted in the detection of two species, one of which is the known species Murricia triangularis Baehr & Baehr, 1993 and the other one is a new species, Murricia hyderabadensis. So far, this genus has been known from India from female specimens only. The present article provides the redescription of M. triangularis and the description of M. hyderabadensis sp. nov. based on female specimens.

Abstract A search for the Siberian silk moth – Dendrolimus sibiricus (Tschetverikov, 1908) was carried out from 2002 to 2004 using sticky traps baited with a synthetic sex pheromone blend. Traps were deployed in 98 localities throughout Lithuania: in town parks, botanical gardens, forest trees nurseries and forest lots. No D. sibiricus specimens were found, but a total of 52 other moth species were trapped and identified. D. pini (Linnaeus, 1758) was the most frequently found species. Other species of trapped moths revealed new information on the Lithuanian fauna. Three new localities of the occurrence of very rare for Lithuania moth species, Parornix loganella (Stainton, 1848) and Dichelia histrionana (Frölich, 1828) were found. Six new localities were recorded for the occurrence of five moth species which are rare in Lithuania. Keywords: pheromone trapsvery rare and rare species

This study presents the up-to-date list of the aphid species (family Aphididae, 63 species and one subspecies of 28 genera altogether) reported from Trakai district (Lithuania). It is based on the reference data (23 species altogether, 1927–1966) and original material collected in 1986 and 2007, with the comments on their distribution. Dysaphis leefmansi and Uroleucon cichorii subsp. leontodontis are reported for the first time in the aphid fauna of Lithuania, Aphis valerianae for the first time in the Palaearctic region. Consequently, the list of aphid species in Lithuania has grown to 336 species.

Abstract A search for the pine-tree lappet moth (Dendrolimus pini (Linnaeus, 1758)) and Siberian silk moth (D. sibiricus (Tschetverikov, 1908)) was carried out by using sticky traps baited with synthetic sex pheromone blends. The traps intended for search of D. pini were operated in 19 localities of pine forests all over Lithuania during the period 2004–2006, and for D. sibiricus in 47 localities of such habitats as town parks, botanical gardens, forest trees nurseries and forest lots all over Lithuania during the period 2005–2006. In total, 32 moth species were identified from sticky traps intended for search of D. sibiricus: however, not a single Siberian silk moth was found. D. pini composed the biggest part of moths caught by traps for D. sibiricus, the frequency of D. pini was the highest, and it could be ascertained as not accidental. Other trapped moth species were revealed to be non-target. Two new localities of the occurrence of a very rare for Lithuania moth species, Bryotropha senectella (Zeller, 1839), were established. One new locality of the occurrence of a rare for Lithuania moth species, B. galbanella (Zeller, 1839), was detected. Sticky traps intended for search of D. pini contained 17 moth species. D. pini composed the biggest part of all moths caught, and its frequency was the highest. Other trapped moth species were revealed to be non-target. The traps baited with pheromone blends where two components were used in equal quantities were more attractive for D. pini in Lithuania. An ecomorphological analysis was applied to hamsters, Cricetinae. This subfamily includes seven genera and 18 species which inhabit forest-steppes, steppes, and semi-deserts of Palaearctic Eurasia. The main goals of this study were: (1) to reveal the morphological peculiarities of hamsters and the ecological meaning of these peculiarities, (2) to estimate the levels of specialisation in different hamster species, (3) to reveal the ecomorphological diversity of Cricetinae, and (4) to reconstruct the course of adaptive evolution in hamsters. Hamsters possess a specific combination of ecomorphological traits: a relatively broad head, moderately developed external sense organs, cheek pouches, short hind feet, and a short tail. These and other morphological traits are predominantly associated with nocturnal activity, non-bounding locomotion, relatively good digging ability, poor climbing ability, aggressiveness, granivory with a tendency to herbivory, and hoarding behaviour. The least specialised hamster is Tscherskia triton, and the most specialised is Mesocricetus raddei. Four ecomorphs were distinguished: (1) rat-like hamsters (Cansumys (?), Tscherskia), (2) ‘smaller hamsters’ (Allocricetulus curtatus, most Cricetulus, Phodopus), (3) ‘larger hamsters’ (Allocricetulus eversmanni, Cricetus, Mesocricetus), and (4) Tibetan hamsters (Cricetulus alticola, C. kamensis). It is assumed that the adaptive evolution of hamsters started from a mouse-like ancestor and passed three grades of adaptive evolution: (1) rat-like hamsters, (2) typical hamsters, represented by ‘smaller’ and ‘larger’ ecomorphs, which differ in size and skull morphology, and (3) Tibetan hamsters, which show reverse evolution from a ‘smaller hamsters’ construction to a more mouse-like construction.
