Integrating multifunctional semiconducting metal oxide powders into a 3D printing technique to construct hierarchical porous structures is highly desirable and remains a significant challenge. Herein, an extrusion‐based 3D printing strategy is developed that can assemble TiO 2 powders into hierarchical porous structures with multiscale pores at both the macro‐ and microscale. Powder‐based TiO 2 inks with a significant shear‐thinning behavior and adequate storage modulus and yield stress are developed to meet the requirements of 3D printing of TiO 2 in an air environment without the need for an additional solidification treatment, which provides good printing flexibility. The hierarchical porous structures with a relatively high compressive strength provide the 3D‐printed TiO 2 structures with great potential for use in many applications, including filtration, thermal insulation, biomedical scaffolds, catalyst supports, and energy conversion. Compared with scaffolds with a compact morphology, the hierarchical porous TiO 2 scaffold as a photoelectrode achieves a higher nitrogen photofixation yield due to its high surface adsorption and activation capacity caused by its porous morphology. Importantly, the powder‐based ink design and extrusion‐based 3D printing approach are readily extended to other semiconducting metal oxides such as ZnO and their composites.

3D Printing of Powder‐Based Inks into Functional Hierarchical Porous TiO2 Materials

The widespread utilization of cellulose nanofibril (CNF) has been significantly hindered by its inherent flammability. To explore the potential of using CNF aerogel as sustainable material with good fire‐retardant and thermal‐insulating properties, CNF aerogel is modified by in situ supramolecular assembly of melamine (MEL) and phytic acid (PA). This strategy addresses CNF's flammability and avoids the environment issues associated with the incorporation of traditional fire‐retardant. The modified aerogel exhibits highly porous honeycomb structure with low density and good mechanical properties. After modification with MEL–PA, the aerogel exhibits highly improved shape integrity during burning, higher thermal stability, and favorable combustion behavior for fire retardancy. The heat transfer of the modified aerogel is well hindered, which demonstrated effective thermal insulation performance. In view of the excellent thermal and fire‐retardant properties, the MEL–PA/CNF composite aerogel can be a potential fire‐retardant and thermal‐insulating material for applications such as clothing, building, and electronic devices.

Fire‐Retardant and Thermal‐Insulating Cellulose Nanofibril Aerogel Modified by In Situ Supramolecular Assembly of Melamine and Phytic Acid

Herein, the effects of pre‐deformation to higher levels on mechanical properties, strengthening contribution, and microstructures of 2A55 Al–Li alloy are investigated. It is shown in the results that the tensile strength of 2A55 Al–Li alloy approaches 660 MPa with an elongation of 9.28% after 15% pre‐deformation. The strengthening contribution from precipitates and strain is calculated based on detailed microstructure information. The strengthening model reveals that the joint strengthening contribution of T 1 and θ ′ precipitates decreased with increasing the pre‐deformation. In contrast to the decreased strengthening contribution of precipitates in severely pre‐deformed samples, the part from pre‐deformation dramatically increases thus leading to the enhanced yield strength. It is revealed that the recovery of dislocation structure introduced by pre‐deformation is suppressed during artificial aging. Additionally, herein, the trade‐off between the strengthening contribution and elongation is presented, which can be optimized by selecting proper pre‐deformation processing.

Quantification of the Effect of Increased Pre‐Deformation on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of 2A55 Al–Li Alloy

Magnetorheological (MR) gel is a novel type of smart material with field‐dependent rheological properties, which is mainly composited of soft magnetic particles and a gel‐like matrix. Its controllable rheological behaviors depend on many factors, in which temperature is a significant factor requiring further study. Herein, polyurethane‐based MR gel with a 60% weight fraction of carbonyl iron is developed. The influence of temperature on the rheological characteristics of the MR gel sample is systematically investigated. The steady shear test is adopted to determine the yield stress and dynamic viscosity of MR gel under different temperatures. A new stress model based on Bingham constitutive model and Arrhenius relation is proposed to incorporate the influence of the temperature and to capture the hysteresis characteristics and strain stiffening properties. The results show that yield stress shows exponential decay with temperature and at the same time, dynamic viscosity displays exponential decay both along with temperature and current. Finally, hysteresis behavior responses by sinusoidal strain excitation with the frequency of 0.1, 5, and 15 Hz at the fixed amplitude of 50% and current of 2 A have been extracted to analyze the impact of temperature on the damping and stiffness properties of the MR gel.

An Experimental Study and Modeling on the Thermo‐Rheological Properties of Polyurethane‐Based Magnetorheological Gel

FeCoNi‐based medium‐entropy alloys (MEAs) have attracted lots of attention owing to their potential for achieving excellent mechanical and soft magnetic properties. Herein, an anomalous low‐temperature annealing‐induced hardening behavior in a prototyping equiatomic FeCoNi MEA subjected to severe cold‐rolling deformation is reported. The hardening upon annealing at 300–500 °C is confirmed by both microhardness measurements and tensile tests. Microstructural characterization via transmission Kikuchi diffraction suggests that hardening is correlated with the annealing‐modified nanosubgrained structure. More specifically, the distribution heterogeneities of shear bands and nanosubgrains are reduced upon annealing, which can relieve the strain localization during plastic yielding. Nanoindentation maps further verify that the rearrangement of nanosubgrains upon annealing relieves the severe heterogeneity of nanohardness distribution, ensuring higher macroscopic strength and hardness. Herein, the novel annealing‐induced hardening phenomenon in FeCoNi MEA is rationalized, which can serve as a guideline for optimizing the thermomechanical treatment strategies of this alloy family to obtain enhanced mechanical properties.

Elucidating the Origination of Annealing‐Induced Hardening in an Equiatomic Medium‐Entropy Alloy

Tank cars carrying hazardous materials require fire and thermal protection to prevent disasters in case of accidents. A material with a combination of improved insulating thermal properties and impact resistance within the tank car skin can mitigate the repercussions of such accidents. Steel–steel composite metal foam (S–S CMF) is a novel material with properties that is being investigated for such applications. It is made up of metallic hollow spheres closely packed together within a metallic matrix. To corroborate the effectiveness of this material for the abovementioned application, a full‐scale torch fire test based on the 49 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 179, Appendix B must be conducted on 4 × 4 ft (1219.2 × 1219.2 mm) samples, where they are required to withstand a 30 min high velocity jet fire at 1204 ± 55.6 °C, by not recording a temperature higher than 427 °C on the unexposed side of the samples within 30 min. It is necessary to determine the critical thickness of CMF for which the test would pass; however it would be costly to do this experimentally and thus, a numerical simulation must be conducted to predict the optimum parameters that can address the torch fire requirements. This study outlines the procedure adhered to in modeling the torch fire test and investigates the effect of thickness and density on the thermal response of the S–S CMF. Fire Dynamics Simulator and COMSOL Multiphysics are utilized to compare the one dimesional and three dimensional modeling of S–S CMF response to a full‐scale torch fire test. Investigation shows that the thickness and density of the material play a significant role in how it responds under torch fire conditions.

Effect of Density and Thickness of Steel–Steel Composite Metal Foam on Its Full‐Scale Torch Fire Response

As the electronic industry continues to progress, there is a parallel increase in demand of materials for advanced electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. A hybrid approach is introduced by combining 3D geometrical structure with the integration of radar‐absorbing materials (RAMs) to develop absorptive materials. Present study involves the fabrication of polylactic acid‐based pyramidal honeycomb structures using 3D printing technology, followed by electroless silver plating and infusion with Fe 3 O 4 /epoxy composite. These developed structures/materials test comprehensive within frequency range of 8.2–12.4 GHz (X‐band) using free space, and waveguide methods, focusing on both electromagnetic properties of RAM and EMI shielding performance of structures. Experimental results showcase exceptional potential of fabricated structures, demonstrating efficient EMI shielding up‐to −55 dB, equivalent to 99.999% attenuation of EM waves. Particularly noteworthy is the dominant role of absorption as a primary shielding mechanism, as evidenced by more than 99% (−20 dB) absorption across the entire tested frequency spectrum.

3D‐Printed Pyramidal Honeycomb Structures Plated with Silver and Infused with Fe3O4–Epoxy Composite for Microwave Absorption Applications

The corrosion susceptibility and limited mechanical properties of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) pose challenges to its application in demanding environments, particularly in marine settings. This study investigates the potential of laser surface texturing (LST) to mitigate corrosion and enhance the mechanical performance of Ir‐PLA 3D printed by fused deposition modeling for saline conditions, in which the fabricated materials are exposed to the seawater environment. A design of experiment approach is employed to systematically evaluate the effects of laser power and scanning speed on surface roughness, contact angle, and tensile test as mechanical properties. Results demonstrate that LST can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of Ir‐PLA, with optimal parameters reducing surface degradation by up to 80%. Furthermore, the laser‐treated samples exhibit a substantial increase in mechanical properties, with tensile strength improving by an average of 25% and ductility increasing by 15%, attributed to the microstructural modifications and patterned surface texture induced by the LST process. The findings highlight the potential of LST as a powerful tool for tailoring the surface characteristics and mechanical behavior of 3D‐printed Ir‐PLA in the seawater‐simulated environment, opening new possibilities for its use in marine applications.

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

Herein, the mechanical properties, oxidation behavior, and processing performance of the CoCrFeNiMn high‐entropy alloy are investigated using multiple characterization methods. The alloy exhibits a yield stress of 462 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1037 MPa, and a fracture strain of 31.8% at room temperature. Oxidation tests reveal that the oxide layer consists of an outermost oxide layer and a Cr 2 O 3 layer at both 1000 and 1200 °C. The Cr 2 O 3 layer formed at 1000 °C is dense and continuous, whereas it transitions from continuous to discontinuous as the temperature increases to 1200 °C. Localized peeling of the oxide layer is observed at 1200 °C due to the diminished protective effect of the Cr 2 O 3 layer and the increased stress in the oxide layer caused by the formation of multiple complex oxides. Grinding experiments indicate that both the grinding force and surface roughness increase as the load increases. Additionally, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy results show that the oxygen content of particles at a 120 N is higher than at 60 and 90 N, suggesting an elevated grinding temperature at 120 N, which leads to the formation of bonded convex particles.

High‐Temperature Oxidation Behavior and Grinding Performance of CoCrFeMnNi High‐Entropy Alloy

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in research studies that include the fabrication and characterization of metal matrix composites (MMCs) with unique features. This comprehensive review delves into the evolution and current status of copper MMCs (Cu‐MMCs) across various industrial sectors. Cu‐MMCs have garnered attention due to their remarkable properties, which include excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. This study explores the fabrication processes, and intricate connections between microstructure and properties of Cu‐MMCs, which encompass ceramic and solid lubricants (SLs) reinforcements. The various types of reinforcement and fabrication methods are examined and highlighted advancements in designing compositions and optimizing microstructures during fabrication. Additionally, this study evaluates the friction and wear characteristics of self‐lubricating hybrid composites, providing insights into effective lubrication ranges and overall tribological behavior patterns. This review highlights that Cu‐MMCs demonstrate superior mechanical strength, wear resistance, and self‐lubricating properties due to ceramics and SLs reinforcements. The mechanisms underlying this behavior involve the formation of a protective transfer layer during sliding and effective lubrication provided by SLs, which reduces direct contact and facilitates smoother interactions between the mating surfaces. The review culminates in an outlook on the prospects of Cu‐MMCs, emphasizing the advantages conferred by their utilization.
