This paper introduces a refined method for measuring the fracture toughness of aluminium alloys using notched round bar (NRB) specimens. By incorporating plasticity effects and empirical adjustments, a model based on strain energy density (SED) is proposed. The refined values were validated against experimental data for aluminium 6061-T6 and 2011-T6 alloys. The results demonstrate that the proposed method yields fracture toughness values closely matching the experimental results, underscoring its potential for standardisation and practical applications in material testing and engineering design.

Interest in hydrogen-powered engines is growing due to their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. This research examines how the start of combustion (SOC) impacts the performance of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines using hydrogen exclusively. Using numerical simulations with a 0D multi-zone HCCI model, the study investigates parameters such as compression ratio (CR), equivalence ratio (ER), and intake charge temperature (ICT) to assess their influence on engine performance. The results uncover hydrogen's unique combustion behaviour, characterised by its physiochemical properties and low-temperature combustion. The study identifies an optimal ER range of 0.1 to 0.3, with various ICTs and it is playing a pivotal role in promoting auto-ignition and accelerating combustion. However, an ER of 0.4 and ICT of 393 K produces relatively higher indicated thermal efficiency, which is affected by knocking due to a higher rate of pressure rise, constraining the ER range. Additionally, the research explores the potential of charge dilution to expand the ER range in HCCI mode. These insights provide valuable guidance for enhancing the operation of hydrogen-fuelled HCCI engines, facilitating the transition to cleaner and more efficient propulsion systems in transportation.

Hydrogen driven HCCI engine combustion and performance indices: a numerical investigation

The aim of this study is to investigate the variation in the shape memory effect in the Tan Delta output parameter of shape memory polymeric stents, fabricated by the bio-FDM process, during a reversible endothermic cycle with changes in the input parameters. Pure polycaprolactone polymer was directly used in this study. The Damping Factor, or Tan Delta, is a key factor in expressing the shape memory effect of the memory stents. For a more accurate evaluation of this effect, SEM tests, uniaxial tensile tests, and dynamic mechanical and thermal analyses were employed. The Tan Delta of the shape memory stents was approximately 18.81%. Surface morphology changes led to approximately a 14.18% variation in elastic properties, as the dynamic molecular motion and polymer chain constraints resulted in increased pressure. It was found that the fabrication input parameters led to approximately a 20% change in the shape memory effect.

The main focus of the work is on developing a new class of hybrid composite with polyester as the continuous phase and micro-sized hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and short sisal fibre as the discontinuous phases. The effect of loading of discontinuous phases on the different properties of the composites is analysed experimentally. The incorporation of either of the discontinuous phases unwillingly increases the void content and water absorption rate. With hBN content, the density increases, whereas, with sisal fibre content density decreases. The hybrid combination of fillers successfully improves the glass transition temperature (Tg) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the polymeric resin. The maximum Tg reported is 106.2°C and the minimum CTE reported is 51.7 × 10−6/oC for the polyester reinforced with 40 wt. % hBN and 5 wt. % sisal fibre. The incorporation of hBN upsurges the thermal conductivity but also increases the dielectric properties. The dielectric properties gainfully reduce with the addition of sisal fibre. Dielectric properties also decrease with an increase in the working frequency. The incorporation of sisal fibre slightly reduces the thermal conductivity of the composites. The mechanical properties like tensile strength and flexural strength of the hybrid composite increase when the combination of hybrid fillers is judicially selected, whereas, the compressive strength and hardness of the composite increase with filler/fibre loading with maximum 131.4 MPa and 80.0 Shore D number, respectively. Due to the improved overall properties, the composite material under investigation can find its potential application in various microelectronic applications.
