Towards measuring cognitive load through personalised models in a medium-scale enterprise: a worker allocation approach

Associations between various forms of activity engagement (e.g. work, leisure) and the experience of stress in workers have been widely documented. The mechanisms underlying these effects, however, are not fully understood. Our goal was to investigate if perceived whole day workload accounted for the relationships between daily frequencies of activities (i.e. work hours and leisure/rest) and daily stress. We analysed data from 56 workers with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who completed approximately two weeks of intensive longitudinal assessments. Daily whole day workload was measured with an adapted version of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). A variety of occupations were reported, including lawyer, housekeeper and teacher. In multilevel path analyses, day-to-day changes in whole day workload mediated 67% (p < .001), 61% (p < .001), 38% (p < .001), and 55% (p < .001) of the within-person relationships between stress and work hours, rest frequency, active leisure frequency, and day of week, respectively. Our results provided evidence that whole day workload perception may contribute to the processes linking daily activities with daily stress in workers with T1D. Perceived whole day workload may deserve greater attention as a possible stress intervention target, ones that perhaps ergonomists would be especially suited to address.

Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) are being introduced with high levels of autonomy. This means that not only the role of the human operator is changing but also the way in which operations are performed. MASS are expected to be uncrewed platforms that are operated from a Remote Control Centre (RCC). As such, the concept of human-machine teams is important. The operation of MASS however shares some resemblance to other uncrewed platforms (e.g. Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles; UAVs) and it may be that lessons could be learned in relation to the development of MASS systems. A systematic literature review has been conducted, focusing on decision making, to generate insights into operating uncrewed vehicle platforms and design recommendations for MASS. Seven themes were revealed: decision support systems, trust, transparency, teams, task/role allocation, accountability and situation awareness. A Network Model was developed to show the interconnections between these themes which was then applied to a case study of an UAV accident. The purpose of doing this was to demonstrate the utility of the model to real-world scenarios and showed how each theme applied within the human-machine team.

Leaders’ integrity is a quality of influential leaders and a vital concept in organizational psychology; corporate researchers suggest that leaders’ integrity and psychological empowerment should be a central theme in business leadership studies. The main objective of the current study was to examine the impact of perceived leaders’ integrity on employees’ engagement and mediating role of psychological-empowerment in employees. It was hypothesized that i) there would be a significantly positive relationship between perceived leader’s integrity, psychologicalempowerment, and employee’s engagement in employees; ii) Psychological-empowerment would mediate the relationship between perceived leader’s integrity and employee’s engagement in employees. We took a sample of (N = 320) employees from various government departments of Pakistan with the age range of (25–60) years. The sample was selected through purposive sampling technique. The study findings suggested that perceived leaders’ integrity positively correlates with psychological-empowerment and employee’s engagement. However, it is also revealed that psychological-empowerment fully mediates the relationship between perceived leaders’ integrity and employee’s engagement. Furthermore, demographic variables differed between study variables in employees. The current study’s findings add to the literature about perceived leaders’ integrity and employee’s engagement. Organizations should take care of their employees’ ­psychological-empowerment and have complete insight into leaders’-integrity which help to enhance employee’s-engagement.

Design is a discipline concerned with the human-made products, services, and spaces, while ergonomics focuses on ensuring human well-being by considering human characteristics, limitations, and needs. Each discipline employs its own methodologies, tools, and techniques to achieve its objectives. This research suggests that methodology serves as a unifying element, facilitating the integration of both disciplines by structuring and organising project requirements. It is understood that any design process is associated with various research and evaluation moments, which are utilised for the ergonomic holistic approach and the prioritisation of human-needs and well-being. Furthermore, methodology can lay the groundwork for incorporating human factors into the project. By applying a design methodology across different phases and adopting the systemic approach from ergonomics, this research contributes to the development of a comprehensive methodological framework. This framework assists designers and engineers in seamlessly integrating human factors from project inception to completion. Ultimately, this integrated approach enhances the effectiveness and sustainability of designed environments, fostering improved usability and user satisfaction, while encouraging ergonomics to take a prospective view within the design project.

Development of a methodological framework for the integration of human factors throughout the design engineering project

Lifting bags of dry concrete mix has caused significant physical fatigue and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in transportation maintenance workers. Detection of physical fatigue can effectively prevent developing WMSDs. However, there lacks studies exploring the automated detection of physical fatigue in transportation activities. Additionally, previous efforts on physical fatigue detection, primarily focused in the construction sector, may not be directly applicable to transportation activities, due to different activity duration, intensity, and frequency. Also, prior detection methodologies have been examined under laboratory conditions, and their efficacy in real-world environments remains unverified. Therefore, this study explored physical fatigue detection methods by conducting field experiments with 29 transportation maintenance workers lifting bags of dry concrete mix in a highway maintenance facility. Participants' physical fatigue levels were measured using electromyography (EMG), electrodermal activity, and/or heart rate (HR) and motion data with different machine learning algorithms. Results indicated that the Fully Connected Neural Networks algorithm can achieve the highest accuracy (87.84%) with EMG, HR, and motion data for classifying physical fatigue levels in transportation maintenance workers. This study demonstrated the feasibility of automated physical fatigue detection, which can be implemented as a monitoring tool of physical fatigue for enhancing health of transportation practitioners.
