A major new international journal successfully launched in 2000    Ethnography is a new international and interdisciplinary journal for the ethnographic study of social and cultural change. Bridging the chasm between sociology and anthropology, it is becoming the leading network for dialogical exchanges between monadic ethnographers and those from all disciplines involved and interested in ethnography and society. Ethnography

Peter Geschiere’s most recent writings have come to attend, in increasing detail, to the moral and political panic provoked by the alleged rise of “homosexuality” in Cameroun. This article celebrates Geschiere’s queer turn for its original perspective on postcolonial political dynamics in the region. It particularly focusses on his rich analysis of recurring homophobic associations between same-sex sexuality and the elite procurement of illicit wealth that foreground the anus as a central figure of the popular imagination. This article stretches Geschiere’s interpretation of “anusocratie” by confronting his uptake of Achille Mbembe’s and Joseph Tonda’s remarks on anality-as-passivity with ethnographically informed counterexamples from the DR Congo that render anality as a queer force. This article also suggests some further possibilities and hypotheses that can help situate the supposed rise of anal sex as an occult technique for enrichment and empowerment within longer genealogies of power and transgression in Central Africa.

The rule of the anus? Queer imaginaries of power in central Africa

肛门法则？中非的酷儿权力想象

Witchcraft has been described as knowledge that resists knowledge. Drawing on our field research on witchcraft, alienation, and violence in Mali and southern Cameroon as well as with migrants coming from sub-Saharan Africa, we consider two main issues. The first concerns the epistemic challenge of ‘witchcraft’ and its satellite notions (mystical weapons, animal metamorphosis, fetish and so forth). We analyse this ‘challenge’ beyond the problems of translation, both as a particular expression of African perspectivism and an unending struggle concerning epistemic sovereignty. The second issue directly originates from our field research. Prudently, we will try to give a new lease of life to an ethnographic material, studied 20 years ago. We would turn back to some drawings made by students at the primary school of Mbom (Sangmelina, southern Cameroon), and explore the power of what we provisionally define as ‘visual utterances’.

Witchcraft as a case of ethnographic murk: Impasse of knowledge, harshness of experience

As Peter Geschiere focussed in his early work - based on Marxism - on the articulation of modes of production, in this essay I put reproduction central, emphasizing change in and attitude towards old and new forms of education in north Cameroonian society. I indicate that articulation of forms of reproduction, shows us that ‘modern/colonial’ education co-exists with former forms of education and how it interrupts the gain (and retain) or control elderly people may have over younger women in general, or on their autonomy. Does education - as a means of reproduction - lead to new forms of what could be called a class-society? Can such an approach make visible a possible subdominant position or a possible autonomy of women as active agents? Or even the intersection of gender, education, ethnicity and/or religion? this essay, based on three extended case-studies (fieldwork since 1986), I contribute to a study of ‘longue durée', which importance has always be underlined by Geschiere. It shows the complexity of the influence of new forms of education in this area throughout time.

The article provides an answer to fundamental questions of what qualifies a name, specifically the (god) father’s name, as something unnameable comparable to the God’s name? What word is commonly used by the Bamilekes from the Grassfields region of Cameroon to name a name that cannot be named in public? What is substituted for when a name is unavailable? Why are these people engaged in a politics of sur-naming, despite the fact the fact they usually bear many names? Is the prevailing sur-naming practice justified by the lacking of proper name as Derrida argues? The text argues that in Bamileke societies where a respectable kinship system (in opposition to a joking kinship) prevails, an adult is rarely referred to by his/her name but rather by his/her ndap (eulogy name) that ends up obliterating the person’s proper name to the point of turning it into a dead name.

In southeastern Nigeria, Igbo-speaking people commonly assert that “a debt never dies.” In anthropology, it is well established that debts contribute to constituting social relations. Whether related to money or not, debt has wide social significance and invites moral and metaphorical interpretations. The Igbo provide a particularly salient case for exploring the multidimensional implications of debt because they regularly deploy the concept across a range of domains well beyond the businesses for which they are renowned. In honor of Peter Geschiere, this paper focuses on debt in southeastern Nigeria as a vehicle to examine sociality and its underbelly. Several ethnographic examples of debt are presented and analyzed drawing on Geschiere’s insights to illuminate and explain what can otherwise appear to be paradoxical tensions and connections between cooperation and conflict, trust and betrayal, and other antinomies integral to everyday life.

‘A debt never dies’: Navigating trust and betrayal in southeastern Nigeria

Egyptian shaʿbi music is typically positioned as a somewhat vulgar style produced and consumed by the working-class masses. But in practice, numerous individuals have long been attempting to sanitise it to appeal to audiences deemed more elite. This article, based on 21 months of ethnographic fieldwork with musicians and producers in Cairo, investigates how this mainstream, mass-mediated, commercially successful version of shaʿbi, known as ‘clean shaʿbi’ ( shaʿbi nadif) is produced and distributed. I explore how three different cultural brokers try to clean up shaʿbi in distinctive ways. I argue that their success does not reveal a straightforward crossing of class-cultural divides, as it might at first appear; in each instance boundaries are in some ways crossed, and in other ways reinforced. Cleaning up shaʿbi does not necessarily benefit the musicians: the processes through which their music is sanitised and mediated are often exploitative, serving to entrench pre-existing social inequalities.
