African Identities

This article interrogates Shona novelists' perspectives vis-a-vis business management as practiced by indigenous entrepreneurs and managers. Particular attention is on Lwanda's Zvichakuwanawo (Crime Will Catch up with You), Chitsike's Wakandigona Wena (You Outwitted Me) and Nyawaranda's Barika Remashefu (The Bosses' Polygamy). The argument averred in this article is that these selected narratives are not only fractured but also part and parcel of the mythopoeia about Africa and Africans. The Black or indigenous business owner and manager is emblematically cast in lurid images, devoid of business acumen and as brutes incapable of administrating and managing business ventures successfully. Such negative stereotypes of traducing and excoriating black businessmen and managers as congenital failures through novelistic discourses, typify pro-imperialist prejudices and misrepresentations that generations of Europeans have created against the Black civilization. Guided and informed by Afrocentricity, we established that the selected novels, though they address a pertinent issue, are materials of questionable integrity with a vast potential for disempowering society through sustaining and fostering anti-life pessimism, literary deception and dis-agency in the readership.

This study examines the relations between Turkey and the Horn of Africa, focusing on historical legacies and their impact on relationships. The examination of Turkey's relations to the Horn of Africa can be categorized into three stages. The initial stage might be characterized as a period of active involvement during which the Ottomans emerged as a prominent participant in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea areas. The historical legacies of this particular period play a significant role in enhancing our understanding of the opportunities and challenges that shaped Turkey's subsequent interactions with the Horn region. The subsequent period, spanning from 1923 to 1998 can be characterized as an era of active withdrawal and shrinking from Empire to Statist Republicanism, during which Turkey's engagement and relations with the Horn countries were constrained. The third phase, which has its origins in the Open to Africa document from 1998 and materialized in 2002 with the rise of AKP, can be interpreted as a period characterized by Turkey's revitalized efforts to foster comprehensive collaborations with the countries in the Horn region. The research utilizes an analytical and interpretive methodology to examine various documents and secondary sources of literature.

The South African Department of Higher Education has emphasised the use of online learning (e-learning). Educational technology resources were used for e-learning, replacing face-to-face learning during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Consequently, with this transition and new developments in learning technologies, early career academics (ECAs) in one of the universities in South Africa faced various challenges in teaching language modules online. This qualitative case study intended to explore the experiences of ECAs in teaching language modules at a university during the transition from face-to-face to online learning. Data is generated from five ECAs who were purposively and conveniently sampled from the School of Education using reflective journals, and one-on-one semi-structured interviews. The technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) theory is used to guide the study towards understanding ECAs' knowledge of technology, content, and pedagogy during online teaching of language modules. The Findings indicate that some of the ECAs expressed that online learning was not effective. The majority maintained that the online learning approach was effective. Nevertheless, there were numerous limitations, such as accessibility to technological devices (laptops), and language teacher's state of readiness in adapting to the new approach. Therefore, more professional development programmes should be conducted and studies highlighting ECAs experiences.

Online learning at a South African University: early career academic experiences

The existential conditions that gave birth to the global South as a geopolitical space, an organizing concept, and transnational political imaginary continue to inspire reflective engagements across disciplines including African philosophy. In this article, I draw valuable insights from the global South as both a site of struggle and an analytic framework that addresses various forms of neocolonial domination and exclusion to reflect on the situation in Africa and to argue for the continued articulation of a transformative philosophical discourse in the sense of a sustained offensive against unjustly imposed marginality. Priority focus is on Ubuntu and how it can assist with framing a conception of existence, of justice and of being in the world. It is a reflective enquiry into what Ubuntu can bring to the global South framework. In the context of global South struggles for justice starkly mirrored today in the disproportionate suffering caused by climate change, the principle of intergenerational mutual responsibility derived from Ubuntu as a politico-ethical framework that demands restitution must help construct a world based on justice. Ultimately, emancipative struggles in the global South and analysis thereof must be a discourse anchored firmly on ethics and what it means to be human.

The global South framework and African philosophy: epistemologies and struggles for emancipation

全球南方框架与非洲哲学：认识论与解放斗争

There is a dearth of scholarly literature on the mother of the Zulu nation, Emperor Shaka's mother, Queen Nandi ka Bhebhe. In the precolonial Zulu Kingdom, royal women enjoyed various privileges and responsibilities and contributed significantly to the Kingdom's aggrandisement, but written sources of detailed accounts of their contributions were limited. Queen Nandi, who, as a single mother, raised Shaka and nurtured him into adulthood is not sufficiently celebrated in the available scholarly literature. Although Nandi's history is intertwined with Emperor Shaka's history, in the available mainstream historical literature, she is mentioned merely as Shaka's mother, and her sacrifices in raising and protecting him are consigned to the background. This article pays due homage to Queen Nandi using the available oral accounts and secondary data sources. It explores her historical background as a Langeni Princess, how as a single mother she raised an emperor and her political influence in the Zulu Kingdom. It adds that besides being Shaka's mother, Nandi was a strong-willed woman who served as a bridge between Shaka and relevant stakeholders. The article concludes that the rise and growth of the Zulu Kingdom must also be credited to her motherhood account.
