Evidence regarding the relationship between serum vitamin C levels and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether serum vitamin C levels are independently associated with HPV infection.
Data for this cross-sectional study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003–2006. A total of 2174 women, 18–59 years of age, were enrolled in this study. The associations between serum vitamin C levels (continuous and categorical forms) and cervicovaginal HPV infection were estimated using weighted logistic regression.
The adjusted binary logistic regression showed that serum vitamin C was not associated with the risk of HPV infection after adjusting for age, race, poverty income ratio, alcohol consumption, smoking, body mass index, education, and health condition (odds ratio [OR] 0.998, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.994–1.001). Serum vitamin C levels were converted from a continuous variable to a categorical variable for the analysis. Compared with the vitamin C deficiency and hypovitaminosis groups, there was a negative correlation between vitamin C and HPV infection when vitamin C was adequate (OR 0.7, 95% CI: 0.52–0.94); however, when the serum vitamin C level was inadequate and saturated, this negative correlation was weaker or nonexistent (OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.56–1.03 and OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.55–1.04, respectively). A nonlinear relationship was detected between vitamin C level and HPV infection. Furthermore, we performed subgroup analysis of different models and found that serum vitamin C concentration was negatively associated with HPV infection in women ≥ 25 years of age; however, in women < 25 years of age, serum vitamin C levels were not associated with HPV infection.
The results from this United States nationally representative sample supported the hypothesis that there was a U-shaped relationship between serum vitamin C levels and HPV infection. Future studies are warranted to assess the association between vitamin C and HPV persistence and clarify the underlying mechanisms of these associations.

Association between serum vitamin C and HPV infection in American women: a cross-sectional study

Abstract Background caregiving responsibilities significantly impact females’ decisions on adhering to preventive mammography. The purpose of this study is to examine (1) the levels of mammogram receipt, (2) the role of caregiving factors on the receipt of mammogram in caregiving group, and (3) the role of cancer beliefs on mammogram screening in caregivers and non-caregivers. Methods the 2017 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) provides samples of 1228 women aged 40 to 75 years old for this secondary analysis. By using Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Services Use, a binomial logistic regression model was used to analyze associations between mammography and socioeconomic factors, caregiving factors, and cancer belief factors. Results caregivers who provided more caregiving hours per week (OR = 0.749, 95% CI = 0.564–0.94) and caregivers who had the belief of rather not knowing the likelihood of getting cancer (OR = 0.673, 95% CI = 0.496–0.914) were less likely to use mammogram. However, caregivers who believed cancer is more common than heart disease (OR = 1.490, 95% CI = 1.302–2.151) were more likely to use a mammogram. Non-caregivers who worried about getting cancer (OR = 1.158, 95% CI = 0.793–1.691) were more likely to use mammogram, but non-caregivers who had the belief of rather not know the likelihood of getting cancer (OR = 0.825, 95% CI = 0.713–0.955) were less likely to use mammogram. Conclusions to support caregivers’ breast cancer prevention, caregiving-related policies based on caregiving hours should be developed. Particularly, effort to promote breast cancer screening education and care support among older primary caregivers will likely increase their adherence to preventive mammography uptake. The development of targeted cancer prevention interventions on specific cancer beliefs held by both groups are also urgently needed to promote mammography.

Factors associated with receipt of mammogram among caregivers: a comparison with non-caregivers

Abstract Objective This study investigated the effects of mobile health application designed based on mindfulness and social support theory on parenting self-efficacy and postpartum depression symptoms of puerperae. Methods We recruited 130 puerperae from a hospital in China and randomized them to an App use group (n = 65) and a waiting control group (n = 65). The App group underwent an 8-week app use intervention while the control group underwent no intervention. We measured four main variables (mindfulness, perceived social support, maternal parental self-efficacy and postpartum depressive symptoms) before and after the App use intervention. Results In the App group, perceived social support, maternal parental self-efficacy were significantly higher and postpartum depressive symptoms was significantly lower. In the control group, there were no significant differences in any of the four variables between the pre-test and post-test. Conclusions Our findings indicated that the mobile health application may help to improve perceived social support, maternal self-efficacy and reduce postpartum depressive symptoms. The finding of the mobile health application's effect extends our understanding of integrative effects of mindfulness and perceived social support on reduction of postpartum depressive symptoms and suggests clinical potentials in the treatment of postpartum depressive symptoms.

Positive intervention effect of mobile health application based on mindfulness and social support theory on postpartum depression symptoms of puerperae

基于正念与社会支持理论的移动健康应用对产后抑郁症症状的积极干预效果

Abstract Purpose We aimed to study the effect of music therapy combined with aerobic exercise on the sleep quality of patients undergoing chemotherapy after a radical mastectomy. Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Breast Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Shaanxi Province Tumor Hospital, from July 2017 to June 2019. 110 female breast cancer patients who underwent a radical mastectomy were recruited and randomly allocated into an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group completed music therapy combined with aerobic exercise from the first to the sixth admission to the hospital for chemotherapy, while the control group received only routine nursing care. The sleep quality of these patients was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A linear mixed model was used to adjust the PSQI of patients after controlling for other confounding factors. Results The mean sleep quality score of the breast cancer patients who received chemotherapy after a radical mastectomy (baseline) was 8.86 ± 2.34. The intervention group had a significantly lower mean global PSQI score than the control group from the first test to the third test, with an adjusted mean difference of -1.05 (95%CI: -1.86, -0.24; P = 0.01), -2.89 (95%CI: -3.70, -2.08; P &lt; 0.001) and − 4.84 (95%CI: -5.65, -4.03; P &lt; 0.001), respectively. A change in the global PSQI score from baseline for the intervention group was from 0.55 (95%CI: -0.24, 1.34; P = 0.171) at the first test to 2.75 (95%CI: 1.96, 3.53; P &lt; 0.001) at the last test, and for the control group was from − 0.51 (95%CI: -1.31, 0.29; P = 0.213 at the first test to -2.10 (95%CI: -2.91, -1.30; P &lt; 0.001) at the last test. Conclusions An intervention of music therapy combined with aerobic exercise can significantly improve the sleep quality of female breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy after a radical mastectomy, and this intervention continuously improves many aspects of sleep reactivity. Clinical trial registration This study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2100042975, 02/02/2021).

Effect of music therapy combined with aerobic exercise on sleep quality among breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy after a radical mastectomy: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract Background The aim of this clinical single group pilot study was to assess mental well-being, psychological symptoms, and a set of stress biomarkers among breast cancer survivors with high depressive symptoms undergoing the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. Methods Participants included 23 curatively treated breast cancer survivors from the Helsinki University Central Hospital with clinically significant symptoms of depression (Beck Depression Inventory &gt; 13, and assessed by a psychiatrist), at 1-year post-operative follow-up. Mental wellbeing and psychological symptoms were assessed with self-reported questionnaires (Resilience Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, World Health Organization Quality of Life-questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Insomnia Severity Index); in addition, stress response was assessed with biomarkers (cortisol, adrenocorticotropine, and high-sensitivity-CRP from blood; 24 h-cortisol from urine). All measures were addressed at baseline, mid-program (4 weeks after baseline) and at the completion of the 8-week MBSR program. Engagement to the independent mindfulness home practice was collected with a diary. Results From baseline to the completion of the 8-week MBSR program, we observed significant increases in resilience ( d = 0.60, p = 0.005), and quality of life ( d = 0.92, p = 0.002), and significant reductions in symptoms of depression ( d = − 1.17, p &lt; 0.0001), anxiety ( d = − 0.87, p &lt; 0.0001), insomnia ( d = − 0.58, p = 0.006), and marginally significant reduction in perceived stress ( d = − 0.40, p = 0.09). We found no changes in self-compassion or mindfulness skills, nor in the stress biomarkers during or at the completion of the program. There was no association between the engagement time to the independent mindfulness practice and any of the outcomes. Conclusions Attending the MBSR program was associated with increased wellbeing and reduced psychological symptoms in breast cancer survivors with clinically significant symptoms of depression. However, these favorably experienced changes did not transfer to the level of stress biomarkers during the 8-week program. Lack of association between the engagement in the mindfulness home practice and change in outcomes suggests that in the studied range of practice time, other qualities of MBSR despite the amount of independent practice may have a more important role for the improved wellbeing. Mindfulness is associated with improved psychological well-being but no change in stress biomarkers in breast cancer survivors with depression: a single group clinical pilot study

Abstract Background The prevalence of domestic abuse is greater in times of humanitarian crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic has been no different. Considerable evidence indicates that domestic abuse disproportionately impacts the mental health and wellbeing of racially Minoritised women. The present study aimed to explore racially Minoritised women’s experiences of domestic abuse and mental health in the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. Method An online cross-sectional survey was used with racially Minoritised women ( n = 1202) in the UK during the third national lockdown. Results Results demonstrate complex interplay of psychosocial factors, such as the roles of autonomy, resilience, self-silencing, family functioning, and social support as predictors of mental health and wellbeing during the ‘shadow pandemic’. Conclusion Implications such as incorporating culturally competent mental health support, exploring the complex and multiple underpinnings of mental health in racially Minoritised victim-survivors of domestic abuse for future pandemic preparedness and support provision are discussed.

The pandemic within a pandemic: mental health and wellbeing of racially Minoritised women experiencing domestic abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK

Abstract Background The World Health Organization has recognized maternal mental illness as an emerging issue. Previous studies have indicated that maternal mental illness is associated with socioeconomic status (SES). However, there is a lack of research concerning the mental health of pregnant people with low SES in Ontario, Canada. In this study, we examined associations between mental health conditions during pregnancy and two SES indicators: the pregnant person’s residential neighbourhood income and education level. Methods A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted, consisting of all singleton pregnancies resulting in stillbirths or live births in Ontario hospitals from April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2021. Data were linked from the BORN Information System database, Canadian Institute for Health Information Discharge Abstract Database, and Canadian Census. Poisson regression with robust error variance models was performed to estimate the relative risks of anxiety, depression, anxiety and/or depression, or any mental health condition during pregnancy, by SES indicator. We adjusted for maternal age, obesity status in pre-pregnancy, certain pre-existing maternal health conditions, substance use during pregnancy, race, and rural or urban residence. Results Within the cohort ( n = 1,202,292), 10.5% (126,076) and 8.1% (97,135) of pregnant individuals experienced anxiety and depression, respectively, and 15.8% (189,616) had at least one mental health condition during pregnancy. The trend test ( p &lt; 0.0001) showed a significant downward trend in the total rates of mental health conditions by increasing SES quintiles. Pregnant individuals in the lowest neighbourhood income quintile tended to have a higher risk of anxiety (aRR: 1.24, 95%CI: 1.22–1.27), depression (aRR: 1.56, 95%CI: 1.52–1.59), anxiety and/or depression (aRR: 1.13, 95%CI: 1.11–1.15), or any mental health condition (aRR: 1.18, 95%CI: 1.16–1.19). Similarly, pregnant people living in the lowest education level neighbourhoods had higher likelihoods of anxiety (aRR: 1.66, 95%CI: 1.62–1.69), depression (aRR: 2.09, 95%CI: 2.04–2.14), anxiety and/or depression (aRR: 1.42, 95%CI: 1.39–1.44), and any mental health condition (aRR: 1.41, 95%CI: 1.38–1.43). Conclusions Despite a universal healthcare system, the variations in mental health prevalence and risk during pregnancy based on SES suggest health inequity in Ontario, Canada. Future studies are needed to examine the mechanisms of this health inequity to guide policy makers in reducing disparities in Ontario.

Associations between mental health conditions in pregnancy and maternal socioeconomic status: a population-based retrospective cohort study in Ontario, Canada

Premenstrual disorders (PMDs) significantly affect the daily lives of women. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Mongolian-translated Premenstrual Symptoms Questionnaire (PSQ) among female nursing students at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences. This cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2023 to January 2024. The PSQ was translated into Mongolian, and its reliability and validity were assessed. A total of 431 participants completed the translated PSQ along with the Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) Scale, Somatic Symptom Scale (SSS-8), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Reliability was evaluated via Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency. Validity was assessed via factor analysis and correlations with external measures. The internal consistency of the Mongolian PSQ was 0. 945. Factor analysis supported the tool's construct validity, which revealed a one-factor structure consistent with that of the original Japanese PSQ. The PSQ had strong positive correlations with the PMDD Scale (r = 0.760), SSS-8 (r = 0.640), PHQ-9 (r = 0.580), and BAI (r = 0.620), which indicated good convergent validity. The Mongolian-translated PSQ is a reliable and valid tool for assessing premenstrual symptoms in female nursing students. These findings suggest that the PSQ is a useful tool for screening PMDs in this population.

Validation of the premenstrual symptoms questionnaire among Mongolian nursing school students

The physical and mental changes created during menopause cause sexual dysfunction, which affects the quality of life, self-esteem, and emotional relationships. Wormwood cream contains tannins, terpenoids, flavonoids, phytosterols, and alkaloids. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of wormwood vaginal cream on the sexual satisfaction and quality of sexual life of postmenopausal women. This study was a randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted on 112 postmenopausal women (45–65 years old) in 2021. The studied women were randomly assigned to two wormwood cream or placebo groups. Wormwood cream or placebo was used for 4 weeks and 3 times a week. The main data collection tools included the Larson Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire (LSSQ) and the Sexual Quality of Life Questionnaire (SQOL-F). SPSS software version 26 and independent t, Mann–Whitney, paired t and Wilcoxon tests were used for statistical analysis. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Before the intervention, the mean and standard deviation of sexual satisfaction was 73.57 ± 3.84 in the intervention group and 73.16 ± 4.52 in the placebo group. After the intervention, the mean and standard deviation of sexual satisfaction in the intervention group was 75.34 ± 3.85 and in the placebo group was 72.82 ± 4.32. The quality of women's sexual life before of the intervention in the intervention and placebo groups was 59.16 ± 14.10 and 57.18 ± 12.38, and after the intervention, it was 83.00 ± 11.51and 69.64 ± 12.97, respectively. At the end of 4 weeks, participants in the wormwood cream group showed a significant improvement in sexual satisfaction and the quality of women's sexual life (P < 0.001). It was meaningful. Based on the findings of this trial, wormwood vaginal cream can be used as an uncomplicated topical supplement to improve sexual satisfaction and quality of sexual life in postmenopausal women with low sexual satisfaction and quality of sexual life.

Evaluating the safety and efficacy of wormwood vaginal cream on sexual satisfaction and quality of sexual life of postmenopausal women: a randomized, triple-blinds, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. Body image distress (BID) refers to psychological distress caused by deviations in the individual's self-aesthetic ability. The objectives of this study are to investigate the prevalence of psychological distress; and to assess the role of anxiety in the relationship between body image distress and quality of life (QoL) among women with polycystic ovary syndrome using a path analysis approach. A multi-center cross-sectional study design was conducted among 294 women with PCOS in 29 provinces in mainland China from July 2021 to December 2021, and the data were analyzed using path analysis. The Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales, Modified Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Questionnaire, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were administered to women who gave informed consent to participate. The results of path analysis are indicated that anxiety significantly mediated BID and QoL in women with PCOS (p < 0.05) and the structural equation model analysis further confirmed the statistical significance of this mediating effect. The fit indices CFI = 1.00, TLI = 1.00, and RMSEA = 0.00, indicating that the model represents the data well. A good fit of the proposed model to the observed data was obtained, which revealed that BID not only directly influenced QoL, but also had a significant indirect effect on QoL via anxiety. Psychological counseling clinics is as well needed to provide patients with individualized psychological counseling and avoid mental health problems caused by body image troubles. Anxiety mediated the relationship between BID and QoL, adding to the paucity of research for women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
