The associated factors of disaster literacy among nurses in China: a structure equation modelling study

Abstract Aims To assess digital capabilities and academic performance among nursing students and investigate the mediating role of students’ self-efficacy. Background In the context of education and technology, digital capabilities, self-efficacy, and academic performance among nursing students are interconnected concepts. Students who use their digital capabilities and competencies combined with their belief in the ability to efficiently perform learning tasks could improve their academic endeavors. Nevertheless, insufficient consideration has been placed on research understanding of the mediating roles and broad elements that influence their relationships. Methods A cross-sectional, correlational, descriptive, and quantitative study was established. During the 2022–23 academic year, data were gathered from 200 students. The Hayes Process Model 4 macro was employed to investigate the role of students’ self-efficacy mediating effect on the association between digital capabilities and academic performance. Results The digital capability level and self-efficacy level were high. Additionally, the academic performance level was moderate. The mediation analysis revealed that the direct effect of digital capabilities on student performance in the presence of the mediator was significant ( b = 0.0063, p = 0.022). Hence, self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between digital capabilities and student performance. Conclusion The study emphasized the importance of improving students’ digital capabilities that enhance their confidence and self-actualization. In addition, nursing students are encouraged to improve their sense of self-efficacy throughout their tenure in college because it is a predictor of future success.

Factors influencing sleep quality among nurses in tertiary hospitals in Kelantan, Malaysia: a cross-sectional study

Abstract Background Self-stigma and negative attitudes toward mental illness have been identified as significant barriers that hinder individuals from seeking psychological assistance, leading to adverse consequences in their lives. Aim This study aimed to assess mental health stigma and internship nursing students’ attitudes toward seeking professional help. Methods A cross-sectional design was conducted in the current study including a purposive sample of 228 participants of internship nursing students using a Socio-demographic data sheet, Self-Stigma of Seeking Help scale (SSOSH), and Attitude toward seeking professional psychological help scale (ATSPPH). The data acquisition period spanned from August to November 2022. Results This study revealed significant insights into the attitudes of internship nursing students toward seeking professional psychological help. Gender emerged as a notable factor, with males exhibiting higher levels of self-stigma compared to females (mean = 2.872). Attitudes towards seeking professional help varied significantly based on age, gender, residence, and marital status. Specifically, participants aged 23 years, females, rural residents, and married individuals demonstrated the highest Mean scores reflecting attitudes that lean more positively towards seeking help. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation ( r = -0.372, p &lt; 0.01) was observed between self-stigma and attitudes toward seeking professional help. Conclusion This study concluded that more than three-fifths of internship nursing students hadn’t stigma towards seeking professional psychological help while the vast majority had a positive attitude towards seeking professional psychological help. However, the majority of students reported that financial barriers, specifically the high cost of therapy, prevent them from seeking psychological help. This highlights the need for more affordable mental health services for this population.

Mental health stigma and internship nursing students’ attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help: a cross-sectional study

Understanding the motivations driving family members to continue caring for individuals with Alzheimer's disease is crucial for enhancing social support programs within community health systems. This study specifically explores the factors influencing Iranian family caregivers' ability to persist in their caregiving roles. This qualitative study was conducted using conventional content analysis with 22 participants in 2022 in Babol (a city in northern Iran). The inclusion criteria for the study included caregivers of Alzheimer's patients who had been the primary caregivers for at least one year for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. The sampling method was purposive, ensuring maximum variation in social position, demographic status, and stages of Alzheimer's disease after the onset of symptoms. In this research, data were collected from caregivers of Alzheimer's patients through semi-structured interviews and in-depth individual interviews. The data were analyzed using MAXQDA software. One category and four subcategories were identified to explain the continuity of the caring role in family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients. The category was "on the Fence of the Caring Role." The subcategories included Commitment to Care (Being Determined, Being Indebted, Feeling Dutiful), Coercion to Care (Giving in to the Caring Role Due to Family Requirements, Patient Care Due to Financial Problems), Socio-Cultural Beliefs and Concerns (Spiritual and Religious Tendencies, Social Stigma and Social Fears), and Attachment and Love for the Patient (Feeling Pity, Feeling Nostalgia for Kinship). Family caregivers are deeply engaged in their roles, often feeling trapped by various pressures. Recognizing these dimensions can inform policymakers and health practitioners in developing targeted interventions, such as respite care programs, financial support, and community resources, aimed at alleviating caregiver burden and enhancing the quality of care for patients. By addressing the complexities of the caregiver experience, effective strategies can be implemented to support both patients and their caregivers, ultimately improving health outcomes within the community.

Factors influencing the ability of family caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients within Iranian families to continue and persist in their caregiving roles: a qualitative study

Abstract Background While efforts to improve the educational preparedness of nurses to care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ +) people have increased, the influence of role-modeled behaviors by healthcare professionals working with nursing students and recent graduates is not well understood. The purpose of this study is to describe the role-modeled behaviors of healthcare professionals observed by nursing students and recent graduates caring for LGBTQ + patients in clinical settings. Methods A cross-sectional, online survey was conducted. Recruitment of nursing students who had completed one or more clinical rotations or were recent graduates (≤ 2 years) was performed through university emails and social media. Items included measurement of stigmatizing attitudes, observed stigmatizing behaviors, and ability to provide inclusive/affirming care for LGBTQ + patients. Open-text items prompted participants to describe observed behaviors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon signed rank sum tests to evaluate differences between LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) and T + (transgender and gender diverse) subscales. Open-text responses were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify relevant themes. Results Participants ( N = 73) had a low level of stigmatizing attitudes toward LGBTQ + people (M = 1.8, SD = 0.4), although higher stigmatizing attitudes toward T + people were reported (M = 3.0, SD = 0.2; Z = -7.254, p &lt; .001). Half of the participants reported that they observed LGBTQ + stigmatizing behaviors role-modeled by two + healthcare professional roles; approximately one-third of participants personally engaged in one + LGBTQ + stigmatizing behaviors, most commonly toward T + people. Themes from participants’ examples of observed stigmatizing behaviors included: cis-heteronormative bias , non-affirmation of chosen name/pronouns , outing patients , and rejected competency . Conclusions The majority of participants described observing stigmatizing behaviors toward LGBTQ + people in clinical settings. Poorer attitudes and a higher frequency of stigmatizing behaviors observed towards T + people point to deficits in healthcare provided to T + people in particular. Efforts to address LGBTQ + stigma in healthcare should be expanded to include clinical settings to address role-modeled behaviors and socialization of nurses.

Nursing students and role modeled behavior while caring for LGBTQ + people: a cross-sectional, descriptive study

This study aimed to translate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Innovative Behavior Inventory-20 (IBI-20) among clinical nurses in northwest Iran. A descriptive survey with psychometric analysis was conducted involving 321 nurses from Ardabil medical training centers. The study employed a stratified proportional sampling method. Data were collected using standard questionnaires, including a demographic profile form and the innovative behavior questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, such as mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage, were calculated using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 26.0. Reliability was assessed through Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega, and Coefficient H. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed using IBM SPSS version 26.0 and AMOS version 24.0, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. The findings indicate that the IBI-20 possesses good face validity, content validity, construct validity, convergent and discriminant validity, and reliability. CFA confirmed the accuracy of the tool's six-factor structure, with all factors exhibiting factor loadings greater than 0.3. Internal consistency was excellent, as demonstrated by a high Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega, and Coefficient H. The test-retest reliability of the IBI was also robust, with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.942. Our study validated the Persian version of the Innovative Behavior Inventory-20 (IBI-20) for assessing innovative behaviors among Iranian nurses. The IBI-20 is a vital tool for addressing healthcare challenges. The validation process, including face validity, content validity, and confirmatory factor analysis, demonstrated excellent validity, establishing it as a reliable instrument for evaluating innovative behaviors among nurses. These findings significantly impact nursing practice and research, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.

Psychometric properties of the Persian version of the innovative behavior inventory-20 items (IBI-20) in clinical nurses: a cross-sectional study

Abstract Background The global nursing shortage has particularly severe consequences in resource-constrained countries like Nepal, where a significant outflow of healthcare professionals exacerbates the crisis. While the impact on patient care, workforce dynamics, and organizational challenges within healthcare settings have been extensively researched, the profound implications of this crisis for nursing education remain underexplored. This qualitative study sheds light on the often-unseen consequences of the nursing shortage on undergraduate nursing students’ clinical education. Methods Data were collected from three focus group discussions involving eighteen final-year nursing students from two tertiary institutions. The first two discussions took place in June 2024, with the third one in July 2024. Thematic analysis was employed to identify and interpret the key themes. Results Four overarching themes emerged: (1) Compromised Learning, highlighting the detrimental impact on skill acquisition and student preparedness; (2) Abandoned in the Field, revealing the emotional toll of isolation, with students describing themselves as “ghosts, silently observing from the sidelines”; (3) Forging Ahead, showcasing the unintended resilience and resourcefulness of students seeking alternative knowledge sources; and (4) Digital Mentors, spotlighting the innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a supplementary learning tool in overburdened clinical settings. Conclusion The nursing shortage in Nepal has created a challenging and often isolating clinical learning environment (CLE) for students. While their resilience and adaptability are commendable, these qualities are not substitutes for nurse staffing shortages and inadequate mentorship. This study underscores the urgent need for systemic change, including increased investment in the nursing workforce, cultivating a supportive learning environment, and integrating technology into nursing education. These findings have implications for Nepal and other resource-constrained settings grappling with the challenges of a nursing shortage.

A generation at risk: the unseen consequences of Nepal’s nursing shortage on undergraduate nursing students clinical education

Burnout is a state of physical and mental exhaustion triggered by long-term work stress, which is manifested mainly as emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a decreased sense of accomplishment. Among them, emotional exhaustion is its core feature, which often leads to a significant decrease in an individual's enthusiasm for work. Owing to the high intensity of the work environment and the special requirements of emotional labor, the nursing community is more vulnerable to burnout. This burnout not only affects the quality of care but also significantly increases nurses' willingness to leave their jobs.

Multidimensional perspectives on nurse burnout in China: a cross-sectional study of subgroups and predictors

Escape rooms have become increasingly popular in recent years as teaching tools. However, traditional Chinese education still relies heavily on teacher-led instruction, and there is limited research on the application of escape room-style teaching methods in nursing education. This study initially applied the escape room method to evaluate basic nursing skills and aimed to explore the experiences of undergraduate nursing students participating in escape room-style assessments for basic nursing skills using qualitative interviews. In this study, a descriptive phenomenological research method was employed to conduct in-depth interviews with 12 undergraduate nursing students who participated in a basic nursing skills assessment using an escape room scenario. Interview data were organized and analysed using the Colaizzi's seven-step analysis method. Data analysis revealed two overarching themes and five corresponding sub-themes. The primary themes included learning experience and learning feedback, while the sub-themes encompassed a relaxed environment, motivation enhancement, team collaboration fostering a learning community, integration of theory and practice, cultivation of critical thinking skills, improvement of assessment design plans, as well as inclusion of teacher evaluation and review sessions. Escape room teaching has received positive evaluations. It combines relaxation, fun and interactivity, and supports teaching goals such as improving students' initiative, teamwork and critical thinking. Future improvements to escape room training can enhance its role in consolidating knowledge and improving nursing skills.
