Postpartum Mood Disorders: When Mothers Kill—The Case of Mary Ellen Moffitt

This cross-sectional study looked at the relationship between mental health therapists’ perception of treatments’ impact and actual change. Twenty-three licensed mental health therapists, providing ‘‘treatment-as-usual’’ to foster children, rated their impact on children’s complaints of depression, anxiety, behavior problems, and self-esteem after 6 months of treatment. Actual change was measured by taking the difference from preand posttreatment on standardized instruments: Children’s Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Child Behavior Checklist, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Of the 23 therapists surveyed, only a single therapist on a single outcome variable negatively evaluated the efficacy of their practice. No correlation was found between the therapists’ perceptions of client’s progress and actual child’s outcomes. Meeting the Challenges of Evidence-Based Practice: Can Mental Health Therapists Evaluate their Practice?

Caring Dads: Helping Fathers Value Their Children is a unique intervention program designed specifically for men who have maltreated their children and/or who have exposed their children to abuse of their mother. Over a 17-week period, this group targets change in the use of abusive parenting strategies, in attitudes and beliefs that support unhealthy parenting, and in men's appreciation of the impact of violence on children. Herein, we apply a comprehensive evaluation framework to the Caring Dads program. We present evidence that Caring Dads meets a need, has a sound theoretical basis, and can be implemented in a way that meets the needs of stakeholders. Preliminary Evaluation of an Intervention Program for Maltreating Fathers

School safety, a major concern for students, parents, and school staff, is also a key issue for state and federal legislators who develop educational guidelines and standards. This article summarizes early disasters and the subsequent impact on school-based crisis intervention and safety plans. In particular, children’s mental health services are emphasized as a critical component of crisis intervention. Additionally, based on feedback from State Departments of Education, the current status of school crisis planning across the United States is summarized. History of School Safety and Psychological First Aid for Children

The study examined physiological and psychological changes associated with the content of disclosure of a stressful event. A total of 60 students were assigned to either an emotion and facts or a facts-only disclosure condition. Each participant talked about a highly stressful personal event for 5–10 min, while skin conductance was recorded. Measures of negative mood were assessed before and after disclosure. In the emotions and facts condition, skin conductance significantly decreased, whereas the facts-only condition showed no significant change. Sadness and guilt significantly increased frombefore to after disclosure in both conditions. Including emotional content in verbal disclosure of a highly stressful event may decrease physiological arousal, whereas sadness and guilt may increase whether emotional content is included or not. The findings have implications for applied areas of consultation-liaison services and early crisis intervention. [Brief Treatment and Crisis Intervention 7:176–183 (2007)]

This study describes the prevalence of childhood trauma and maltreatment antecedents among 111 criminal offenders referred for forensic and mental health counseling. Sixtynine percent reported such antecedents. Seventy percent had Axis 1 mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substancerelated disorders. Many were comorbid. The implications of developmental psychopathology arising from childhood trauma and maltreatment for counselors who treat forensic clients are addressed. Early Trauma and Subsequent Antisocial Behavior in Adults

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to further the understanding of mental health practitioners level of collaboration with the families of individuals with schizophrenia in association with the rates of psychiatric hospitalizations and residential crisis. Findings indicate that practitioners of all disciplines (N 1⁄4 120) rarely collaborate with families of individuals with schizophrenia, and when they do, it frequently is in a time of crisis/hospitalization. The hospitalization rates of individuals with schizophrenia on the practitioners’ caseloads (N 1⁄4 1,183) had significantly higher hospitalization and residential crisis usage rates and more mean hospitalization and residential crisis days than clients with all other diagnoses (N 1⁄4 4,715), indicating a need for interventions that reduce hospitalization rates and shift from a reactive paradigm of treatment to a more proactive and preventative paradigm of treatment.
