Bulletin of Hispanic Studies

The Angolan writer José Luandino Vieira was imprisoned by the Portuguese colonial regime from 1962 to 1972, first in a Luanda prison, then, after 1964, in the Tarrafal concentration camp on the island of Santiago. Most of Vieira’s fiction was written during his incarceration. His early stories and short novels presented the mixing of the Portuguese and Kimbundu languages in the poor musseques (Black townships) around Luanda as a potentially revolutionary idiom capable of forging the future Angolan nation. The present article argues that, due to external pressures that accumulated in 1968, Vieira’s short novel João Vêncio: os seus amores marks a watershed in its more free-flowing linguistic experimentation and its explicit account, glossed over by earlier criticism, of a homosexual male relationship. Through textual analysis and the study of intertextual references to the work of João Guimarães Rosa and Ernest Hemingway, this article establishes João Vêncio: os seus amores as both a pioneering work of gay fiction in Angolan literature and the necessary prelude to the books that Vieira would write during his final years in Tarrafal.

Centenary Paper: ‘Nossas amorizades’: Homosexual Love in José Luandino Vieira’s <i>João Vêncio: os seus amores</i>

Walter Scott, considerado el padre de la novela histórica, cuenta con numerosas traducciones al español durante los siglos XIX y XX, destacando en este último las adaptaciones para un público juvenil. El presente trabajo se centra en la recepción de este novelista protestante por la censura gubernativa decimonónica, especialmente durante la monarquía absoluta de Fernando VII, y por el régimen franquista (1939–1975). Para ello, tras presentar una visión general del funcionamiento del sistema censorio y su legislación en las épocas consideradas, se comentan los efectos de este mecanismo de control sobre la obra de Scott, analizando algunos casos concretos significativos. En este sentido, mientras que a algunos textos meta se les deniega la licencia de impresión o se concede su autorización con tachaduras, en otros casos los traductores/ editores autocensuran sus versiones para producir reescrituras inofensivas y aceptables, sobre todo en términos morales y religiosos.

In his major works, such as the Florentine Codex and the Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España , Bernardino de Sahagún described the Aztec god, Tezcatlipoca, as the only invisible and impalpable supreme deity. This portrayal aimed to present Tezcatlipoca as a god with Christian-like attributes, but far different from other Indigenous deities. This essay, however, extensively challenges such a presentation of Tezcatlipoca by thoroughly examining the divine traits and roles of Tezcatlipoca in Prehispanic historical and religious traditions. Before the Conquest, Huitzilopochtli, not Tezcatlipoca, held the position of the supreme deity as it was the patron god of the Mexicas, the people of Tenochtitlan, who politically and militarily dominated the Prehispanic world. Additionally, characterizing Tezcatlipoca as an invisible and impalpable god contradicts Prehispanic religious practices as Indigenous people were actively engaged in visualizing their gods through the ixiptlahuan (impersonators) and communicated with them through the tlaquimilolli (sacred bundles or gods’ relics). This essay argues that Sahagún assimilated the Indigenous Tezcatlipoca to the Christian god as a strategic move to facilitate his evangelical project.

Centenary Paper: Christianization of Nahua Religion: Presenting Tezcatlipoca as the Invisible Supreme God in the Works of Bernardino de Sahagún

En este artículo se defiende que Miguel de Cervantes tuvo un concepto clásico de la historiografía que consistía, fundamentalmente, en estudiar hechos políticos del pasado reciente. En relación con ese concepto, aquí se analiza e interpreta Don Quijote de la Mancha como parodia de las prácticas historiográficas del Siglo de Oro, especialmente aquellas dedicadas al estudio de la Antigüedad, que no se ajustaban al canon cervantino. Asimismo, este trabajo analiza el ambiente cortesano en el que convivían literatos e historiadores y subraya algunas afinidades entre Cervantes e historiadores y escritores como Luis Cabrera de Córdoba y Pedro Mantuano, con quienes Cervantes compartió ideas sobre cómo escribir historia, estrategias para asociarse con el entorno del duque de Lerma y animadversión por adversarios como Juan de Mariana.

Más que ningún otro poeta español del siglo XX, Rafael Alberti (1902–1999) encarna aquello que Octavio Paz denominó como ‘tradición de la ruptura’ para caracterizar la lírica de su siglo. Su particular peregrinación de estilos desembocará en el compromiso político, desde una óptica civil, concibiéndose en nuestro poeta como vanguardia. Irá transitando de un estilo a otro y de una tradición a otra, convirtiéndose en un devorador de formas estéticas, y haciendo de ese nomadismo su propia concepción vanguardista de su obra. Toda su primera época de cambios, géneros e hibridación se condensan no obstante en Sobre los ángeles (1929), para asumir finalmente esa mirada dialéctica de la vanguardia como compromiso en el compromiso como vanguardia, una solución literaria vital que le acompañará, a partir de entonces, en sus continuas evoluciones, y que seguirá recorriendo estilísticamente durante toda su proteica, extensa e intensa trayectoria.
