Background: Methamphetamine Use Disorder (MUD) poses significant harm to individuals and communities. In Australia, pharmacies have been involved in harm reduction services, primarily focusing on opioids. While much is known about pharmacists' attitudes toward opioid use disorder, there is limited understanding of their perspectives and management of MUD. This study aimed to explore pharmacists’ perspectives on the provision of services to clients with MUD. Methods: Recruitment of pharmacists involved a snow-ball and convenience sampling strategy across Sydney, Australia. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken to explore pharmacists’ perspectives on the treatment and management of MUD in the pharmacy setting. Transcribed interviews were qualitatively analysed using an inductive approach, coding themes from the data emerging. Results: Nineteen pharmacists completed the interviews. The strongest theme emerging from the transcripts described pharmacists’ reported unfamiliarity with MUD. Participating pharmacists almost unanimously perceived there was a lack of educational resources surrounding MUD, inadequate university curricular on MUD, and a lack of support for pharmacists’ role in any prospective MUD treatment programs. Conclusion: Studies indicate that pharmacists are often unfamiliar with MUD, which, along with insufficient educational resources, causes low confidence and hinders their ability to support individuals with MUD. Implementing targeted educational interventions for pharmacists is essential to improve their effectiveness in MUD treatment programmes.

Pharmacists’ perspectives on methamphetamine use disorder in the Australian community setting

Background: The World Health Organisation (WHO) aims to end the HIV epidemic by 2030, sparking ongoing debates about pharmacists’ increased involvement in providing care to HIV-affected individuals. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and risk perceptions related to HIV/AIDS among final-year pharmacy students to determine whether they are adequately trained to elevate HIV prevention and management to the next level. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023 among 309 pharmacy students at different private universities in Pakistan located in Islamabad and Rawalpindi using a structured questionnaire. Data analysis was done using SPSS v.23. Results: More than half of the sample had poor knowledge related to HIV. Only 26.2% of the students knew about diagnosing AIDS. Regarding attitudes, less than 20% of participants strongly agreed that a Pharm.D. student can counsel an HIV/AIDS patient, while 25% were hesitant to do volunteer work with HIV patients. Only around 50% of the participants agreed that HIV transmission could be prevented by using safety measures. Conclusion: This study found that future pharmacists are not prepared, as the majority had poor knowledge of HIV/AIDS, varying by sex and institution. Attitudes towards patient care differed, but risk perceptions were satisfactory. Involving community pharmacists can help prevent HIV transmission through proactive measures.

Preparedness, attitudes, and risk perceptions of future pharmacists regarding HIV/AIDS: A cross-sectional study from Pakistan

Background: Pharmacogenomics explores how genetic variations affect drug responses, crucial for personalised medicine. Understanding healthcare students’ perspectives is vital for advancing awareness in this field. This study aimed to assess healthcare students’ knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards pharmacogenomics at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Sagamu Campus, Ogun State. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among healthcare students (medicine, pharmacy, and nursing) at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu Campus, Ogun State, using purposive sampling. Results: Respondents from medicine, nursing, and pharmacy demonstrated a moderate level of confidence in pharmacogenomics knowledge (38.1%, 75.9%, and 42.6%, respectively). They also indicated that their curricula inadequately cover pharmacogenomics (p &lt; 0.001), highlighting the need for curriculum revisions to incorporate pharmacogenomics training. Conclusion: Healthcare students exhibited fair knowledge and favourable attitudes towards pharmacogenomics, yet further education is essential for a comprehensive understanding of its fundamentals and clinical implications.

In summary, the ICPJE was born from an initial small group that met previously in Granada to advance the visibility and quality of research in clinical, social and administrative pharmacy practice. Even prior to its formal naming, the group had made progress recently, although it recognises the need to consolidate its work. The group is dedicated toward strengthening clinical, social and administrative pharmacy practice, not only as a discipline, but the entire profession, including the patients served by its clinicians and researchers. The ICPJE was founded by a select group of journals; but ultimately it is a group that is open to any other journal in the field. Each journal is represented by a vibrant group of individuals, including the editors and publishing companies. The ICPJE will be reaching out to various stakeholders seeking collaboration and insights from fellow scholars and practitioners throughout the world.

Background: The Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) offers a method to integrate pharmacotherapy cases between disciplines. However, establishing a consistent grading standard across multiple faculty and disciplines creates a challenge. The purpose of this study was to describe the reliability of a single-point rubric for assessing integrated cases among interdisciplinary graders. Methods: A single-point rubric was developed to provide students with formative and summative feedback on existing integrated cases requiring written PPCP notes. The rubric was calibrated retrospectively on a sample of deidentified cases from two integrated pharmacotherapy courses. Following calibration, 20 submissions were evaluated by an interdisciplinary team of faculty. The following year, four new evaluators graded 12 submissions to ensure continued reliability. Results: Fleiss' kappa was used to determine if there was an agreement between instructors’ judgement on the final grade classification of the original 20 submissions. There was almost perfect agreement between the instructors’ judgements, κ= .868. Each section of the PPCP and overall numerical score all showed significant agreement using Kendall’s W. Results were similar the following year with four new graders. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the continued reliability of a modified single-point rubric to evaluate written cases involving multiple disciplines.

Background: The pharmacy education landscape is transforming rapidly, driven by advancements in healthcare delivery, technology, and patient-centred care. This evolution highlights the need for core and specialised frameworks to guide curriculum development, competency assessment, and professional standards and influence the quality of pharmacy practice and patient outcomes. Objective: To map the validated Lebanese core and specialised pharmacy competencies with existing global core, advanced, humanitarian, and education frameworks. It also sought to suggest new domains, considering current and potential future health challenges. Methods: In this work, validated Lebanese pharmacy competency frameworks (core and specialised) were mapped to four FIP frameworks, i.e. the Global Core Competency Framework (GbCFV1, optimised in GbCFV2), the Global Advanced Development Framework (GADF), the Global Competency Framework for Educators and Trainers (FIP-GCFE), and the Global Humanitarian Competency Framework (GbHCF). Results: The findings underscore enhancing competencies across digital health, public health, emergency readiness, and pharmaceutical care domains in various curricula and frameworks. Conclusion: This study revealed several opportunities for improvement, highlighting the importance of revising and incorporating new competencies, such as digital health, emergency preparedness, and public health practice, into the Lebanese core competency framework. These competencies would enable pharmacists to adapt to rapidly evolving practices and assume new roles.

Mapping validated Lebanese core and specialised pharmacy competencies to global frameworks

Background: Despite efforts to educate the public about medication starting from an early age, there remains a scarcity of medication-related programs and accessible resources specifically designed for children. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the 'Know Your Medicine' programme in enhancing medication literacy among primary schoolchildren in Malaysia. Methods: This interventional study compared pre- and post-knowledge scores in a non-randomised, one-group pre-test-post-test experimental design. Primary schoolchildren aged 10–12 years old participating in the 'Know Your Medicine' programme engaged in informative sessions and interactive activities. Eleven validated questionnaires were administered before and after the intervention to measure changes in medication knowledge levels. Results: A total of 81 primary schoolchildren completed the study. The mean baseline knowledge score was 6.88 and 7.85 pre-test and post-test, respectively. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test confirmed a statistically significant improvement in medication knowledge following the intervention (Z = −4.345, p &lt; 0.001). Conclusion: The findings reveal the effectiveness of the 'Know Your Medicine' programme in enhancing medication literacy among primary schoolchildren in Malaysia, highlighting the importance of implementing targeted educational interventions to improve medication knowledge among primary schoolchildren.

Assessing the impact of the 'Know Your Medicine' programme on medication literacy among children aged 10–12 years in Selangor, Malaysia: A pre- and post-survey intervention study

Background: Pharmacists are crucial in managing diabetes, requiring appropriate confidence levels and knowledge for effective clinical decision-making. Therefore, the current study assesses correlations between student pharmacist confidence and knowledge in diabetes pharmacology and therapeutics within a UK institution. It also examines the influence of their teaching experience on these factors. Methods: An online questionnaire was disseminated to final-year pharmacy students (n = 47) at Ulster University. A 5-point Likert scale determined student confidence on diabetes pharmacology and therapeutics topics, with related multiple-choice questions assessing corresponding knowledge. Associations between confidence and knowledge were then determined. Results: Most students felt confident understanding diabetes pharmacology and therapeutics, except for treatment algorithms. They answered six out of ten knowledge domains correctly, though gaps were noted in treatment algorithms, drug options, and side effects. No overall correlation between confidence and knowledge was found, but a significant positive correlation existed regarding insulin action and recognising hypoglycemia signs. Generally, students were satisfied with their diabetes-specific teaching experience, as shown by excellent attendance, but they would welcome additional innovative teaching methods. Conclusion: The current study presents no overall correlation between confidence and knowledge of final-year Ulster University pharmacy students about diabetes pharmacology and therapeutics content. Whilst teaching methods were well received, more engaging tools may help address areas where knowledge gaps were identified.
