Canadian Journal of Dietetic Practice and Research

Purpose: To assess dietetic students’ anxiety levels before and after a series of simulations and to document students’ perceived sources of anxiety while completing simulation-based learning activities. Methods: A mixed-method convergent pilot study was conducted. Students enrolled in a Nutrition Assessment course that included a series of four simulations were invited to participate. Students completed an online pre-post simulation survey and engaged in individual interviews and a focus group discussion. The questionnaires included demographic questions and the French State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Nonparametric tests and thematic analysis were used to examine data. Results: Fourteen students participated in the study’s quantitative component and seven in the qualitative component. There was a significant decrease in trait (44.5 ± 13.8 vs 32.0 ± 14.0, P = 0.01) and state (47.0 ± 11.2 vs 33.0 ± 18.0, P = 0.05) anxiety from pre- to post-simulations. Individual factors influencing students’ anxiety levels were stress and self-confidence. External factors influencing students’ anxiety levels were unknown situations, observers, patient profiles, observers’ feedback, preparation level, and academic setting. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that ensuring the educator is not present during simulations, advance preparation, and reassurance that simulations are a learning and not an evaluation activity may be effective pedagogical strategies for dietetic educators to reduce learners’ anxiety and facilitate competency development.

Dietetic Students’ Perceived Anxiety towards Simulation Activities: A Mixed-methods Pilot Study

Sample size estimation is a critical aspect of nutrition research methodology, yet it remains frequently overlooked, leading to underpowered studies and potentially inaccurate conclusions. This review addresses this gap by providing comprehensive guidance on how to calculate sample size in nutrition research. Emphasizing the importance of an a priori sample size calculation, the review outlines the key considerations, including the desired levels of significance and power, effect size estimation, and standard deviation assessment. Formulas for determining sample size for various comparisons, including two proportions, two means, three or more groups, and unevenly sized groups, are provided, along with strategies for addressing loss to follow-up. Hypothetical examples illustrate these formulas' application across different research scenarios, highlighting their practical value in ensuring study robustness. Additionally, the review discusses common pitfalls in sample size estimation, such as misjudging effect size or standard deviation, and emphasizes the need for transparent reporting of sample size calculations to enable accurate interpretation of study findings. This article is a resource for nutrition researchers, offering guidance on conducting appropriate sample size calculations to bolster methodological rigor and study reliability. By embracing the principles outlined herein, researchers can elevate the quality of nutrition research.

How Many Participants Are Needed? Strategies for Calculating Sample Size in Nutrition Research

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic condition requiring continued input from the CF dietitian as an integral part of the CF multidisciplinary team. In recent years, the longer life expectancy experienced by people with CF (PwCF) means that nutrition advice and therapy are evolving from a focus on nutrition support to prevention and management of comorbidities. Little has been reported regarding the perceived role of the CF dietitian amongst PwCF. We report the responses to 11 questions that were part of a larger international survey distributed to members of national CF charities in 2018-2019. These questions evaluated PwCFs' perspectives on (i) the importance of the CF diet, (ii) how often PwCF obtain dietary/nutritional advice from their dietitian, (iii) the perceived reliability of information given by the dietitian, (iv) other sources of CF information and their perceived reliability, and (v) how CF nutrition/diet, as well as CF-related diabetes, ranked as research priorities. There were 295 respondents from 13 countries. Almost half of the respondents (46.8%) contacted their CF dietitian on a frequent/more regular basis, compared to medical/scientific journals/medical/scientific search engines. The CF dietitian was considered a reliable source of information, as 84% of the respondents indicated that the information provided was very/generally reliable. At a time when CF care and expectations are changing rapidly, PwCF are in need of trusted and reliable information to make positive changes in lifestyle and habits. Dietitians working with PwCF should appreciate the pivotal and valued role they perform as purveyors of robust evidence-based information to this chronic disease population.

What is the Perceived Role of the Dietitian Amongst People with Cystic Fibrosis? Results of an International survey

It is important that breast cancer patients know where they can access evidence-based nutrition information because misinformation may lead to confusion for patients regarding dietary requirements, as well as potentially causing harm to health. There are gaps in knowledge about where and when patients seek nutrition information. Our exploratory study used telephone interviews to investigate where patients with breast cancer obtained nutrition information pre and postdiagnosis, and their preferred sources and timing for receiving nutrition information. We interviewed 29 women diagnosed with breast cancer who had attended the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alberta. The structured interview included 13 closed-ended questions and 1 open-ended question. Interviews revealed that motives for seeking nutrition information changed between pre and postdiagnosis, but the sources did not. The majority of participants did not access a registered dietitian (RD) postdiagnosis but did specify that meeting with a RD would be their preferred source of information. Responses varied for the preferred sources and timing of nutrition information provision. Our study suggests that further research is necessary to know how to best meet the nutrition information needs of patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Patients’ Preferred Source and Timing of Nutrition Information

Purpose: To investigate the experiences of dietetic students in a faculty-supervised, noncourse-based service-learning (NSL) opportunity called Nutrition Ignition! (NI!) to understand how NSL activities contribute to dietetic education. Methods: This study used focus group methodology. A convenience sample was recruited from current members of NI!. Participants completed a brief demographic questionnaire and then engaged in a focus group discussion led by a trained moderator who followed a semi-structured guide. Six focus group discussions were transcribed, and a common theme template was developed by researchers. Results: Out of 46 eligible members of NI!, 33 agreed to participate. The main reasons participants joined NI! were to develop professional skills and to help children in the community. Participants discussed many outcomes from their participation in NI!, including enhanced communication skills, especially in terms of knowledge translation; increased ability to be flexible and adapt to “real-world” situations; deeper awareness of the research process; and expanded world view. Conclusion: This study suggests that NSL is an effective way to build dietetic students’ personal and professional skills and provide an additional opportunity in academic settings to prepare dietetic students for entry-level practice.

An Exploration of Dietetic Students’ Experiences in a Noncourse-based Service-Learning Opportunity in a Canadian Academic Setting

Background: Qualitative research involves the analysis of data in various forms (i.e., written text such as interview transcripts, literature, or a personal diary; visual media such as photographs, maps, or memes; and audio materials such as podcasts, music, or voice notes) to describe and/or interpret phenomena and humans’ perceptions and experiences of the world, including of food, health, and well-being. Dietetic-scholars have raised concerns about the dearth and quality of qualitative dietetic research. Objective: To document the availability and quality of qualitative research published in Canadian dietetic literature. Methods: A manifest content analysis of articles published in the Canadian Journal of Dietetic Research and Practice (CJDRP) between 2012 and 2021. Results: In total, 340 articles were published between 2012 and 2021 of which 43 (12.6%) used qualitative methods. Overall, the quality of qualitative articles was poor; articles frequently failed to report the methodological approach or a theoretical framework. Methods of data collection, data analysis, and strategies to ensure rigor were seldom described in detail. Reported limitations were often inappropriate for qualitative research. Discussion: Qualitative research is markedly underrepresented in the CJDPR. Efforts are needed to ensure that high-quality qualitative research evidence and publishing opportunities are available to Canadian dietetic practitioners and researchers. This study provides baseline data to evaluate the impact of future efforts.

What Evidence?: Qualitative Publishing in the Canadian Journal for Dietetic Practice and Research

Purpose: Nutrient profiling (NP) ranks foods according to nutritional composition and underpins policies (e.g., front-of-package (FOP) labelling). This study aimed to evaluate Canadian adults’ dietary intakes using proposed Canadian FOP “high-in” labelling thresholds and international NP models (i.e., Ofcom, FSANZ, and Nutri-Score) and examine the association between intakes using international NP models and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: Intakes from the Canadian Community Health Survey-Nutrition (CCHS-Nutrition) 2004 and 2015 were given NP scores and assessed against FOP thresholds. CCHS-Nutrition 2004 was linked with death records (Canadian Vital Statistics Database, n = 6767) and CVD incidence and mortality (hospital Discharge Abstract Database, n = 6420) until December 2017. Results: Foods that would require FOP labels, should there be such regulation in Canada, contributed 38% of calories. Association between NP scores and mortality was significant for Ofcom, FSANZ, and Nutri-Score (hazard ratio (HR) in highest quintile (lowest quality): 1.73, 95%CI [1.20–2.49], 1.59[1.15–2.21], and 1.75[1.18–2.59], respectively), and for CVD incidence, among males (HR in highest quintile: 2.11[1.15–3.89], 1.74[1.07–2.84], and 2.29[1.24–4.24], respectively). Conclusions: Canadians had moderately healthy intakes. NP systems could discriminate between low and high dietary quality such that adults with the lowest diet quality were more likely to experience all-cause mortality and CVD events (for males).
