Biodiversity

For 50 years, the IUCN Commissions, Secretariat, Members such as BirdLife International and partners such as UNEP-WCMC have been mobilising biodiversity and conservation knowledge products, which are fundamentally important for tracking progress towards 10 of the 20 Aichi Targets, and should similarly become so for seven of the emerging 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Each of these knowledge products comprises standards, governance and quality control, data sets, tools, capacity building and ongoing processes for derivation of biodiversity indicators. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, established in 1964, documents extinction risk for more than 76,000 species. Protected Planet, working from the mandate to provide the UN List of Protected Areas, is convened jointly with UNEP and documents ~220,000 protected areas. The Red List of Ecosystems aims to assess the risk of collapse of ecosystems, and is currently being piloted in a number of countries. Key Biodiversity Areas are sites contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity, identified at national levels using globally standard criteria. The system has been developed over the last four decades by BirdLife International and others with ~15,000 sites identified; it is anticipated that IUCN will approve the umbrella standard around these existing approaches in 2015. Of the 55 global indicators mobilised for mid-term assessment of progress towards the Aichi Targets for the fourth Global Biodiversity Outlook, nearly a third were wholly or partly based on these knowledge products (spanning 10 of the Aichi Targets). Indicators derived from these knowledge products will also be applicable to seven of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, annual investment into these knowledge products is currently only a fraction of that necessary to maintain their currency, quality, and scope. If these key indicators towards the Aichi Targets are to be maintained, sustainable long-term financing mechanisms must be established to resource the underlying knowledge products.

Climate change is one of the leading causes of global biodiversity declines and extinctions. Yet knowledge of its impact on African buffalo distribution on the continent is lacking. In this study, we apply ensemble species distribution modelling to predict the distribution of two coarsely defined African buffalo functional groups under current and future climate scenarios (Shared Socioeconmic Pathway, SSP245 and SSP585 in 2100) and estimate habitat representation within protected areas. Model predictions indicate significant range contraction and expansion in the savanna and the forest buffalo functional groups, respectively. Also, the proportion of suitable habitats for both functional groups is represented poorly within protected areas, with the current coverage expected to decline further. Our findings reveal plausible implications of climate change on African buffalo conservation and zoonotic diseases. Overall, this climate-based approach could be applied to model the distribution of African buffalo subspecies at local geographical scales in countries with adequately sampled occurrence data to support conservation decision-making.

This study investigates the impact of urbanization and elevation on avian diversity across three university campuses in the Philippines. Urbanization, a significant driver of global environmental change, negatively affects biodiversity by altering natural habitats. Birds, frequently used as bioindicators, are vital subjects for studying urban impacts due to their visibility and sensitivity to environmental changes. This research compares the abundance of bird families across campuses at different elevations, revealing significant variations influenced by urban structure, vegetation, and resource availability. Line transect, point count, and mist-netting methods were employed to survey the birds in the study area following established methods. The family Pycnonotidae is most abundant in the low-elevation urban campus (University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines - Cagayan de Oro), while families like Nectariniidae and Cuculidae are more prevalent in the high-elevation campus (USTPClaveria). These findings underscore the importance of habitat diversity and resource availability in supporting avian communities. The study highlights the potential of urbanized university campuses to serve as refuges for biodiversity if managed appropriately. Enhancing habitat complexity, maintaining green spaces, and ensuring diverse food resources are crucial for sustaining bird populations. The results emphasize the need for targeted conservation efforts within urban campuses to preserve and promote avian diversity in increasingly urbanized landscapes.

Avian abundance and diversity in three urbanized university campuses at different elevations in Northern Mindanao, Philippines

Many gaps remain in understanding species evolution and distribution in Northeast Brazil, particularly in the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes. Our aims are to increase knowledge about the species of New World marsupials in the state of Piauí, identifying regions that are still poorly sampled, contributing to the delimitation of the geographic range of these species. We compiled online database data collection, scientific collection vouchers information and data from published articles. Twelve didelphid species were registred: Caluromys philander, Cryptonanus agricolai, Didelphis albiventris, Didelphis marsupialis, Gracilinanus agilis, Marmosa murina, Marmosa demerarae, Marmosops sp. Metachirus myosuros, Monodelphis domestica, Philander opossum, and Thylamys karimii. These represent about 18% of the Didelphidae occurring in Brazil. The survey revealed occurrences for 33 Piauí municipalities, representing only 12% of the state area. The extreme south and north of Piauí lack studies concerning marsupials, and parts of the centre-north and southeast are also poorly sampled. The results show an important geographic range increase for four species. Despite these results, Piauí is still an understudied region of the country. Valuable and immeasurable information may be lost due to degradation and loss of natural areas of Cerrado and Caatinga in the state.
