This article explores the issue of fear as an instrument of power in Discours sur les moyens de bien gouverner by Innocent Gentillet. This protestant author was a witness to the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, which he blamed on Machiavellians. In his book, Gentillet enters into polemics with Machiavelli's The Prince. He opposes the ideas proposed by the Italian and gives many counterarguments. As for fear, he evokes a maxim of Machiavelli's that the Prince can be cruel if he is obeyed, whereas, for the Frenchman, cruelty is the cause of fear, and with the help of historical examples he proves that the cruel Prince cannot govern for long. The second aspect on which the author focuses is the relation between love and fear. Gentillet disagrees with the Italian author who says that it is impossible to pot both so it is better to be feared than loved. Innocent Gentillet's discourse follow the anti-Italianisme of the time.

Between 1690 and 1715, the literary fairy tale, the conte de fées, becomes fashionable in France, created by the regulars of Parisian salons and distinct from the folktale. The monster in the modern fairy tale is ridiculed, so that the fear it is supposed to inspire is apparent (the example of the tales of Madame d’Aulnoy and de Murat). Then, in two fairy tales (Le prince rosier by Catherine Bernard and Anguillette by Mrs de Murat), I analyse fears and anxieties that are rooted in love rather than evil spells. The pessimistic vision of love links the fairy tale with the novel of the late 17th century. Both are meant to transport the reader to another, distant world in order to portray the real world all the better. Contes de fées create an atmosphere of spiritual anxiety that has no connection with the enchanted world: no supernatural powers change human nature and the misery it leads to, and the sophisticated form and magical setting hide the true face of the world of feelings.

17世纪末法国文学童话中无鬼怪可惧？

The present paper focuses of the feeling of fear described in A Historical Narrative Of The Shipwreck And Captivity Of Mr. De Brisson (1789) written by a French colonial officer who – in 1785, on his way to Senegal – shipwrecked and then spent 14 months in captivity of African tribes living on the borders of the kingdom of Morocco before convincing his masters to accompany him to Mogador and exchange for a ransom. Given the theme of the book, the fear plays an important role in the text. Yet – contrary to expectations – Brisson is rarely afraid, unlike other Europeans who survived the shipwreck and – what is more – he manages to inspire fear among Moroccan tribes. The paper is divided into three parts. The first shows how Brisson talks about his own fears. The second indicates how he portrays the fear of other Europeans and the third one focuses on the fear Brisson causes among nomads.

In the Introduction to the First Day of the Decameron Giovanni Boccaccio depicts the Black Death pandemic and also portrays the devastating effects of death on emotional states of Florentines. Although the plague doesn’t enter the artistically ordered world of the Decameron’s storytellers, death and fear are still present in the novellas. Therefore, a question may arise, how is it possible that the novellas which were written to bring comfort often show dramatic events? To approach this issue the article aims to examine various relations between love and fear. It turns out that in the reconstruction of the world devastated by the plague, it may be helpful, among other things, to return to the ancient chivalrous values and the concept of courtly love, which only noble individuals can truly experience. What is important, nobility of spirit according to Boccaccio is not determined by either gender or social origin.

This article explores the question of ethos in Theatre de diverses cerveaux du monde, text written in 1583 by Tommaso Garzoni and three years later translated from Italian into French by Gabriel Chappuys. The book is a collection of satirical speeches, in which the author praises or condemns different types of “brains”, i.e. character traits. The ethos, or the author’s self-creation in the work, takes a very specific form; it is not only the man of letters who speaks, but also the Theatre that appeals to its spectators. The allegory of the theatre used by Garzoni introduces a satirical dimension, which becomes a tool to criticise certain attitudes. In Chappuys’ translation the book acquires a new dimension; not only satirical, as in the Italian work, but also moral.

Le Cinquiesme Tome des Histoires tragiques porte en son sein l’expression contrastée des conflits humains tant par le style que par le biais des violentes expériences humaines qui y sont relatées. L’ensemble des ressources discursives et génériques semblent sollicitées par François de Belleforest qui s’emploie à divertir le lecteur dans la veine de ses prédécesseurs mais aussi à affirmer style et idées politiques personnels. Le recours systématique au discours direct y apparaît pétri d’intentions rhétoriques et didactiques. Visant à dynamiser le récit, celui-ci côtoie simultanément épanchements sanglants et discours moraux attendus où la volonté d’instruire semble surpasser celle d’effrayer. Le tissage des genres littéraires exprime, en outre, la prépondérance de la tragédie, de la harangue mais aussi du fait-divers illustrant ainsi une forme d’osmose littéraire au service d’une même cause. Cependant, la collision entre la doxa du docere et l’expression controversée du placere, interroge plus encore chez Belleforest que chez ses prédécesseurs.

The Contrast Expression of Speeches in Le Cinquiesme Tome des Histoires tragiques

《<悲惨故事>第五卷中演讲的对比表达》

Devant son souhait de poursuivre l’entreprise de Pierre Boaistuau, en répondant aux goûts du public de l’époque, François de Belleforest ne se contente pas de traduire les nouvelles de l’Italien Bandello ; il produit une oeuvre d’une grande originalité, en privilégiant la portée exemplaire de ses récits. Paradoxalement, tout en affichant ses préoccupations morales, l’auteur met en scène des personnages emportés par des passions destructrices et complètement gouvernés par le mal. Dans cette étude, on montrera que le conteur opte pour l’authenticité de la représentation, en puisant ses histoires tragiques dans l’actualité ou dans l’Histoire. En outre, il semble primordial, tout en s’interrogeant sur l’efficacité du projet d’édification du lecteur, de mettre en relief l’aspect novateur de l’oeuvre narrative de Belleforest.

Si l’histoire tragique offre la représentation d’un univers historique animé par des passions violentes, elle construit aussi l’image d’une société où la colère change de nature et de fonction selon les catégories sociales. La tension existant entre l’aptitude de la colère à se mettre au service des grandes valeurs éthiques de la Renaissance et son incapacité à répondre aux exigences de l’humanité, de la raison, de la justice et de la mesure rend la colère tragique. La colère n’est ni bonne, ni mauvaise en soi mais elle est un des effets de la misère humaine, qui elle-même est la conséquence du péché originel. Dans l’univers créé par Belleforest comme dans celui décrit par Augustin, la cité des hommes et la cité de Dieu sont indistinctement mêlées. La colère de qui vit selon la chair est mauvaise, celle de qui vit selon l’esprit est bonne. L’éthique des Histoires tragiques pourrait bien témoigner de la forte empreinte laissée sur Belleforest par la méditation de la Cité de Dieu de saint Augustin.

La colère dans les Histoires tragiques de François de Belleforest : une lecture augustinienne

Un monstre humanoïde serait né à Cracovie en 1547. Il connaît une certaine célébrité et se retrouve dans des ouvrages naturalistes, de tératologie, de prodiges ou encore des cosmographies. Alors qu’il est souvent utilisé pour dénoncer les persécutions contre les protestants, le catholique intransigeant François de Belleforest l’insère dans sa Cosmographie universelle en 1575. Dans sa dénonciation du protestantisme, Belleforest est souvent radical, devient à l’occasion manichéen, voire violent, et utilise la nouvelle Imago Mundi au service de son combat. Son usage politique de la géographie est d’autant plus efficace que l’ouvrage touche un large public avide de découvrir une synthèse des récentes découvertes sur le monde. L’article procède à une archéologie de cette gravure, et étudie l’élaboration et la circulation des savoirs cosmographiques, ainsi que leurs usages confessionnels et politiques. Il apparaît que Belleforest dote cette gravure d’un sens nouveau qui met en évidence les angoisses eschatologiques et politiques en cette période charnière de passage du pouvoir de Charles IX à Henri III.

The “Monster of Krakow”: Knowledge, Religion and Politics in the François de Belleforest’s Cosmographie Universelle (1575)

Au sein du second tome de la Cosmographie (1575), qui s’intéresse aux espaces extra-européens, savoirs géographiques et polémique religieuse s’entrecroisent. Belleforest réélabore ses sources, en particulier la Cosmographia de Münster, pour les placer au service de la défense d’un catholicisme intransigeant. Les territoires de l’hétérodoxie forment autant de mondes à l’envers, où le mal se donne à voir sous ses multiples visages. Décrit comme un péril surgi au coeur même de la chrétienté, la figure du protestant se surimprime de manière récurrente à celle de l’étranger idolâtre, l’hérésie du premier surpassant toujours celle du second. Au sujet de la religion des Turcs, Belleforest s’attache à la description des moeurs plutôt qu’à la théologie et aux conséquences politiques de la différence religieuse. Considérée comme une forme dégénérée du christianisme, l’hérésie turque permet de blâmer l’ensemble des manifestations de l’hétérodoxie et d’exhorter le pouvoir royal à veiller à la sauvegarde de l’orthodoxie.
