Due to recent developments in wearable sensor technology, textile electrodes are routinely being employed in electromyography (EMG) for continuous monitoring of the biosignals from the muscles. However, the performance of such smart textile-based health monitoring devices depends on several factors such as, the sensitivity (impedance), durability (reusable/washable), users' comfort ability, integrability, and automatability. In this article we review the characteristics and the performance of the EMG textile electrodes, in the context of functional textile materials, smart textile materials, and smart textile systems for biosignals monitoring. The functional textile materials are confined to signal transmission alone, whereas, the smart textile materials include signal transducers and sensors. The more advanced smart textile systems include signal conditioning circuits with displays. Nowadays, textile-based sensors embedded in garments are becoming a part of users' normal life, in particular, the textile systems that continuously monitor the vital physiological signals from muscles are being sought after in healthcare settings.

A review on the recent developments in design and integration of electromyography textile electrodes for biosignal monitoring

Shear stiffening gel (SSG) with significant shear stiffening effect overcomes the problems of fluid volatilization and particle deposition, and exhibits a wide range of application prospects in intelligent protection. In this work, SSG with different rheological properties were manufactured by mechanical blending and crosslinking and coated on Kevlar fabric. The dynamic rheological properties of SSG and the low-velocity impact resistance of Kevlar/SSG composites were investigated, and the coupling mechanism between SSG and Kevlar fabric was analyzed. The results reveal that the storage modulus of SSG increases by 3–6 orders of magnitude when shear frequency ranges from 0.1 to 100 Hz, and the highest storage modulus reached 2.53 MPa. The impact deformation of the composite is reduced after SSG stiffening, and the infiltration of SSG inside the fabric also prevents fibers pull-out during the impact process. By synergizing the performance of SSG and Kevlar fabric, the optimal single-layer T280 composite can absorb up to 70.21% of the impact energy, reaching the energy absorption efficiency of 0.5 J/g. The process optimization and rheological design provide a theoretical foundation to further enhance the impact resistance performance.

Effect of shear stiffening gel rheology on its Kevlar fabric reinforced composite under low-velocity impact

Polyacrylonitrile can be used as a base material for thermochemical conversion into carbon. Especially nanofiber mats, produced by electrospinning, are of interest to create carbon nanofibers. Optimal stabilization and carbonization parameters, however, strongly depend on the spatial features of the original material. While differences between nano- and microfibers are well known, this paper shows that depending on the electrospinning method and the solvent used, considerable differences between various nanofiber mats have to be taken into account for the optimization of the stabilization conditions. Here, we examine for the first time polyacrylonitrile nanofiber mats, electrospun with wire electrospinning from the low-toxic dimethyl sulfoxide as a solvent, instead of the typically used needle electrospinning from the toxic dimethylformamide. Additionally, we used inexpensive polyacrylonitrile from knitting yarn instead of highly specialized material, tailored for carbonization. Our results show that by carefully controlling the maximum stabilization temperature and especially the heating rate, fully stabilized polyacrylonitrile fibers without undesired interconnections can be created as precursors for carbonization.

Stabilization of polyacrylonitrile nanofiber mats obtained by needleless electrospinning using dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent

In this study, the antibacterial fatliquor emulsion was prepared from castor oil bearing thymol (1, 2, 4 and 8% w/w) to be used in the leather production. The average particle size and zeta potential of the fatliquors were determined by zeta sizer. The thermogravimetric behaviors of fatliquor emulsions under dry air were analyzed in order to determine the weight losses when they are exposed to constant heating rate. After the emulsification process, fatliquor emulsions were applied into chrome tanned cattle leathers. Antibacterial activities of the fatliquored leather were tested according to standard test method for determining the antimicrobial activity under dynamic contact conditions against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) analysis of emulsion was also determined. The bacterial reduction was measured as 99.9% against S. aureus and 98.6% against E. coli bacteria. MIC values obtained from emulsions against bacteria were determined as 6.25 μL/mL and 12.5 μL/mL respectively. The results of antibacterial tests showed that thymol was very efficient in the fatliquor emulsion against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. Physical characterization of leather was also carried out with optimum fatliquor emulsion (4% thymol w/w) and the results showed satisfactory physical properties on the fatliquored leathers compared to similar leather made with commercially available fatliquors. The results of the study indicated that thymol loaded fatliquor emulsions with small particle size could be a promising solo fatliquor to provide functional properties such as physical, strength, morphological and antibacterial properties to leather as an efficient fatliquor compared to conventional fatliquors.

This paper studies the influence of the weave parameter on the ballistic performance of multi-ply systems. Three types of plain weaves were put into investigation, namely, A090, A200, and A400. Tensile and yarn pull-out tests were performed to investigate the responses of fabric upon quasi-static loading. Penetration tests were performed to characterize the energy absorption capability of different multi-ply systems at impacting velocities ranging from 250 m/s to 460 m/s. It was found that the strength of the fabric sample increased almost linearly with fabric areal density, and the coarser weaves exhibited a greater resistance against yarn pull-out. The ballistic limit ( V 50 ) of finer weave 13A9, is around than 42.5% higher than coarser weave 3A4. In terms of hybrid systems, placing finer fabrics in front and coarser fabrics in the rear exhibits higher ballistic limits than the reversed sequence (8–20 m/s differences), while placing coarser fabrics in front exhibited greater energy absorption capability when the impact velocity is sufficient to cause instant and localized failure. It was also found that the ballistic performance of the hybrid systems does not alter significantly with the mass percentage of the coarser weaves at high impact velocities (greater than 400 m/s). The results indicate that replacing the expensive ballistic weaves with cheap materials in a hybrid system is a reasonable alternative to achieve cost reduction without significant performance degradation.

The ballistic performance of plain-weave multi-ply systems: An experimental investigation

In exploring the viability of kenaf fiber-reinforced epoxy nonwoven composites (KFRECs) for renewable energy infrastructure, the optimization of their manufacturing techniques for maximum performance remains a significant research gap. This study addresses this challenge by investigating the optimization of nonwoven composites’ fabrication techniques to enhance their mechanical, thermal, and microstructural robustness. Thus, an innovative vacuum double-bagging technique was compared with single-bagging and hand lay-up methods aimed at evaluating their impact on tensile and flexural strength, hardness, impact, and thermal resistance. The obtained results indicate that the vacuum single-bagging method significantly improved tensile and impact strength by 16% and 38.5%, respectively, while the vacuum double-bagging offered the greatest improvements in flexural strength and hardness, with increases of 112.6% and 15.3%, respectively, compared to the hand lay-up technique. SEM analysis confirmed the vacuum processing techniques produced well-consolidated composite structures with uniform fiber distribution, complete wettability, a good fiber-matrix interface, and a reduced void content, leading to improved material properties. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations revealed a variation in tensile stress of approximately 22.4% and a close agreement with a minimal variation of 2.1% in flexural stress, further validating these optimized techniques. The results also correlate with enhanced thermal behavior and rigidity at elevated temperatures, with the vacuum double-bagging technique exhibiting the highest thermal stability for the demanding conditions of the energy infrastructure sector. The study concludes that the choice of fabrication technique is pivotal for advancing the design, properties and performance of KFRECs, for sustainable energy structures.

Composites techniques optimization and finite element analysis of kenaf fiber reinforced epoxy nonwoven composite structures for renewable energy infrastructure

Most effective and durable finishes for cotton fabrics typically contain toxic and sometimes carcinogenic chemicals. Although certain bio-based alternative finishes have been reported in literature but these alternatives are usually less effective than conventional toxic finishes. To improve the performance of bio-based finishes, this paper develops and improves a novel and ecofriendly finishing process for 100% cotton fabric, based on ozone treatments in very controlled amount for the first time. Four types of bio-finishes including citric acid, stearic acid, diammonium hydrogen phosphate and fatty acid amide, for easy care, water repellency, fire retardancy and softness properties respectively were used in this research. For each finish, three ozone-based finishing processes; pre-ozonation, in-situ ozonation, and post-ozonation were developed and optimized. For all four types of bio finishes, fabrics with 20% post ozonation exhibited superior finish performance. Crease recovery angle increased from 121° to 194°, water repellency rating improved from rating 0 to 90, char length decreased from 26.6 cm to 10.8 cm and bending length decreased from 2.16 mm to 1.1 mm by using bio-based finishes with ozone exposure without compromising mechanical and comfort properties of cotton fabrics. SEM, FTIR and XRD analysis were also performed on ozone exposed and finished fabrics.

Performance enhancement of non-toxic and bio-based textile finishes through novel and sustainable ozonation

Many manufacturing processes of fibrous composites involve fiber movement to obtain a targeted fibrous preform before the resin is injected or polymerized. The ability of the fibers to move within the yarn can be named “cohesion.” To obtain a correct preform, it is of great importance to know and master yarn cohesion. As there is currently no available method to characterize yarn cohesion upstream, the process parameters have very often to be tuned using lengthy trial and error strategies. This paper proposes to address this issue, demonstrating that the yarn cantilever bending test is a very promising and efficient candidate to characterize and quantify yarn cohesion. In addition, the test can be easily performed in an industrial context and is sensitive enough to discriminate small variations in cohesion, even small discrepancies resulting from the yarn manufacturing process. Above all, thanks to real manufacturing tests on different yarns, this paper shows that the upstream identification of cohesion using the proposed cantilever bending test achieves the goal of predicting the yarn processability.

Relationship between cohesion, processability and bending behavior of carbon rovings

This paper aims to examine the performance of home furnishing applications such as curtains, floor coverings, blankets or pillows to be air permeable, thermal insulators or sound absorbing materials. Two types of fillers, banana fibers and mini Styrofoam balls, were used in different proportions. Plain 1/1, twill 2/2, and sateen four weave structures made of jute-cotton fabrics were implemented by 12 and 16 picks per inch. The KES-F7 Thermo Labo apparatus was used to test the thermal conductivity of fabrics, SDL ATLAS M021 A tester was used to test air permeability, and the sound absorption coefficient (SAC) was measured using the impedance tube. The effect of different number of fabric layers (1, 2 or 3), different types of fillers between two layers of fabric and an air gap between the back plate and fabric samples during the sound absorption test was investigated. Along with two sewing techniques, lockstitch and 3-thread overlock stitch, two layers of optimal sound absorbing samples were joined together to examine the effect of different fillers on fabric properties. Radar chart, ANOVA analysis and coefficient of correlation were used as statistical tools to analyse the results. It was found that the lockstitch demonstrated better sewing performance compared to 3-thread overlock stitch. For triple-layered fabric with a twill structure, increasing the air gap between the back plate of the impedance tube and the fabric sample shifted the resonance frequency from 1600 Hz (SAC 0.97) to 1000 Hz (SAC 0.97). When using banana fibers with sateen structure, the resonance frequency remained at 6300 Hz but with an improved of SAC 0.96 compared to SAC 0.93. On the other hand, combining Styrofoam balls and banana fibres as fillers with a twill structure shifted the resonance frequency from 6300 Hz (SAC 0.93) to 4000 Hz (SAC 0.93).

Acoustic and thermal performance of home furnishings made of blended cotton-jute fabrics

Liquid transport across the thickness of a fabric, also termed as ‘transplanar wicking’, is one of the crucial properties affecting the moisture management capability of textiles. Although many test methods for this property have been proposed in the past, a simple and direct measurement of wetness on both sides of the fabric is still missing. This paper reports on the development of a simple directional liquid transport fabric tester (DLTFT) which can measure the liquid content on both faces of the fabric after exposed to a defined volume of liquid droplets. DLTFT used two filter papers to absorb liquid moisture from both sides of the wetted fabric under controlled pressure, and the gravimetric analysis technique was used to calculate the parameters of liquid transport. A new indicator called normalized transplanar ratio is proposed. The results showed that DLTFT was highly sensitive and reproducible in measuring the transplanar liquid transport properties of fabrics. Analysis further showed that, measurements from DLTFT can accurately differentiate fabrics that cannot be differentiated using existing test methods. This instrument is useful for fabric evaluation in textile product development and quality control.
