The journal publishes theoretical and experimental research in physics and chemistry related to the design, growth, and application of crystal materials, as well as biological phenomena and processes associated with them. We encourage collaborative approaches from various disciplines and technologies, integrating research in crystal growth, crystal engineering, intermolecular interactions, and industrial applications.

Crystal Growth and Design

Three new compounds of bismuth, [C4N2H10][Bi(C7H4NO4)(C7H3NO4)]·H2O, I, [Bi(C5H3N2O4) (C5H2N2O4)], II, and [Bi(μ2-OH)(C7H3NO4)], III, have been prepared by the reaction between bismuth nitrate and heterocyclic aromatic dicarboxylic acids, 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid, and 3,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, respectively, under hydrothermal conditions. The structures of all the compounds have linkages between Bi2O2 and the corresponding dicarboxylate forming a simple molecular unit in I, a bilayer arrangement in II, and a three-dimensional extended structure in III. The topological arrangement of the nodal building units in the structures indicates that a brucite-related layer (II) and fluorite-related arrangement (III) can be realized in these structures. By utilizing the secondary interactions, one can correlate the structure of III to a Kagome-related one. The observation of such classical inorganic related structures in the bismuth carboxylates is noteworthy. Lewis acid catalytic studies on the formation of ketal suggest the possible participatory role of the lone pair of electrons. All the compounds are characterized employing elemental analysis, IR, UV–vis, and thermal studies.

Bismuth Carboxylates with Brucite- and Fluorite-Related Structures: Synthesis Structure and Properties

Birefringent crystals are in great demand for high performance polarizing devices. Designing new birefringent crystals with large birefringence remains a challenge. Herein, we successfully synthesized a new α-BBO-like π-conjugated birefringent crystal, K2HC3N3S3·1.5H2O (I). I exhibits a relatively large birefringence of 0.31@550 nm; such a birefringence is larger than those of most present commercial birefringent crystals. This result indicates that I might be a potential candidate for polarization modulation components in optical devices. First-principles calculations reveal that the planar π-conjugated [HC3N3S3]2– anions make dominant contributions in the large birefringence of I.

α-BBO-like π-Conjugated Crystal with Large Birefringence

Exploration of nonlinear optical (NLO) crystalline materials is a hot and continuing research topic in modern optoelectronics and laser technology. Within this portfolio, the emerging organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides provide infinite opportunities due to their fascinating advantages of inorganic metal frameworks and organic molecules. Herein, by cooperatively combining the inorganic second-order Jahn–Teller distorted octahedron [SbCl6] and the organic π-conjugated aromatic amine (N,N,4-trimethylaniline, C9H13N), a non-centrosymmetric (NCS) organic–inorganic hybrid antimony halide, (C9H14N)SbCl4, has been developed. Meanwhile, the bulky colorless single crystals of (C9H14N)SbCl4 with dimensions of 10 × 3 × 0.5 mm3 are grown by the temperature-lowering crystallization process. Further optical property investigations reveal that the crystals possess a remarkable second harmonic generation (SHG) response (2.1 × KDP, KH2PO4) and a moderate birefringence (0.095@546 nm) to achieve phase-matching behavior, and they demonstrate promising prospects for application in the NLO field. Furthermore, the crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the large SHG response primarily originates from the cooperative coupling between the highly asymmetric distorted [SbCl6] octahedron (3.649 × 10–3) and the π-conjugated aromatic amine. This work points out an efficient route for the future exploration of new quadratic NLO materials with excellent optical performance in hybrid metal halides.

Cooperative Enhancement of Second Harmonic Generation in an Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Antimony Halide

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are widely used in photocatalysis for their high surface area, rich pore structures, and multiple active sites. Although photogenerated carriers generated by MOFs or COFs migrate through their respective active centers under visible light, the charge recombination exists in the MOFs or COFs. Therefore, researchers have constructed covalent bonds between MOFs and COFs as migration channels to effectively mitigate charge recombination. As is well-known, an MOF-COF as a signifcant semiconductor photocatalyst is a common choice for MOFs and COFs, but no systematic analysis of MOF-COF photocatalysts is known. On the basis of our group's research, this paper provides a detailed discussion of the design, synthesis, and mechanistic analysis of MOF-COF photocatalysts. First, we discuss MOF-COF heterojunction structures that can improve the photocatalytic properties of MOFs and COFs. Further, we cover the preparation of MOF-COF photocatalysts with core–shell and non-core–shell structures that are denoted MOF@COF and MOF/COF, respectively, according to different synthesis methods. Then we analyze the mechanisms of MOF-COF photocatalysts, involving photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) and photodegradation. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities of MOF-COF photocatalysts. It is hoped that this review will facilitate the development and application of MOF-COF photocatalysts.

MOF-COF Composite Photocatalysts: Design, Synthesis, and Mechanism

In this work, the thermal decomposition of GaN three-dimensional (3D) microstructures was studied in an attempt to better understand the peculiarities of the complex growth process. Microfins with nonpolar a-plane sidewall facets have been investigated as model structures, and the influence of initial geometry and different annealing conditions in a metal–organic chemical vapor deposition reactor on the thermal reshaping has been investigated. We demonstrate that the annealing of these structures in an ammonia-containing atmosphere, which is comparable to that used during overgrowth, results in the decomposition of the c-plane top surfaces, diffusion of gallium adatoms to the a-plane sidewalls, and their reincorporation on these facets. Such behavior is attributed to the differences in thermal stability of the polar and nonpolar surfaces. By studying the thermal decomposition of microfins with varying geometry, we show that this phenomenon depends mainly on the aspect ratio of these structures. We attribute the strongly enhanced decomposition rate of high-aspect-ratio microstructures to the depletion of the gallium adlayer by adjacent crystal facets, which is the main factor discerning the growth of 3D microstructures from the planar case. Additionally, a simplified model for thermal decomposition involving the main physical mechanisms was proposed and applied to reproduce the experimentally observed behavior. The modeling procedure allows the experimental determination of the diffusion coefficients of gallium adatoms on the a-plane surface under the growth conditions applied. This work highlights the high sensitivity of 3D microstructures to thermal decomposition and offers a toolbox to understand their dependence on the geometry. A proper comprehension of thermal decomposition enables superior control of the GaN overgrowth on 3D topographies, which is a crucial approach for realizing novel device architectures relevant for power electronics or microLED displays.

Amine-Templated Manganese Fluoride Sulfates with Butterfly Clusters: Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties

This study introduces Au nanoparticles into ZnIn2S4 through electrodeposition to overcome the limitation of rapid charge carrier recombination on the photoelectrochemical efficiency. The strong coupling of Au nanoparticles with the FTO substrate not only serves as an electron acceptor but also exhibits a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, significantly enhancing charge carrier separation efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of Au nanoparticles notably improves the light absorption capability of ZnIn2S4, enhancing its solar energy conversion efficiency and rendering it an effective photoelectrocatalytic catalyst. Electrochemical analysis shows that the modified sample achieves a photocurrent density of 0.52 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V (vs RHE), which is 2.15 times that of pure ZnIn2S4, validating the potential of this approach for photoelectrocatalytic applications.
