Acoustic microcavitation is used to detect particles in liquids and suspensions. The observation that an acoustic cavitation threshold is characteristic of particle size is exploited to develop a solution for an important problem facing chemical mechanical planarization of silicon wafers. Specifically, it is established via experiments that a sparse presence of large particles in a nanofine slurry can be detected acoustically. Being able to detect such large particles prior to chemical mechanical planarization polishing is expected to save the wafers from being scratched during planarization. The acoustic method is entirely noninvasive.

The intent of this study is to examine the variations between current implementations of standard room acoustic measures for impulse response measurements. An international round robin has been conducted using a single real measured impulse response, rather than a synthesized response. This offers a more rigorous test of analysis procedures. While there is good agreement at higher frequencies, large variations are found at lower frequencies in which the noise level within the measurement is greater. Some errors are attributed to the existence or robustness of noise-floor detection.

The emission of light flashes from sound driven bubbles in ethylene glycol at 20–23 °C has been temporally stabilized. The intensity of the light flashes is approximately twice that of SBSL in degassed water at 20 °C. The time jitter is less than 100 ns and the flashes spatially jitter less than 2 mm around stable positions near the pressure antinode of the second harmonic. The light flashes trace out periodic, continuous orbits within this small region. Sonoluminescence in ethylene glycol is relatively stable with temporally stabilized SBSL bubbles lasting up to 60 min.

Phase discrimination was measured in a “go/no-go” behavioral task for chinchillas and human listeners in order to compare spectral resolvability between the two groups. Tone complexes comprised a 250-Hz fundamental frequency with N consecutive higher harmonics, and subjects discriminated the cosine-phase complex from a random-phase complex. Values of d′ increased as N increased and were similar between chinchillas and human listeners. Values of the criterion for each N condition were also similar between chinchillas and humans. The results suggest that spectral resolvability is likely to be similar for the two groups.

Holography is potentially the most powerful method for high spatial resolution real time 3D ultrasound imaging and diagnostics. Although versions of ultrasound holography have existed since the 1970s, they use laser reconstruction, thus losing 3-D resolution. By using transmissive ultrasound with a scanning needle hydrophone, full 3D holographic imaging is proved to be possible, if both amplitude and time delay phase information can be obtained.

A shallow-water ocean acoustics experiment is proposed from which it is possible to determine in principle the scattering data necessary to recover the sound-speed profile in the ocean bottom. These data are a “reflection coefficient,” which is not the usual one. The reflection coefficient is amplitude of the outgoing wave at infinite depth due to a unit amplitude plane wave incident from infinite depth. The unusual fact is that this reflection coefficient can be recovered from a measurement in the ocean. The essential assumptions are that the sound-speed profile is known in the ocean but unknown in the bottom, and that the measurements are made in the ocean layer.

Acoustic propagation through sound speed profiles (SSPs) that are periodic in range and geotime is studied using the parabolic equation model and the WKB/adiabatic model. Fluctuations are shown to be significantly reduced when acoustic propagation is through a periodic range-dependent SSP, compared to a range-independent SSP. For a fixed source-receiver range, the number of tidal wavelengths contained within the range is an important factor that determines the fluctuations. The relationship of this factor to the direction of transmission relative to the tidal direction is presented. A useful criterion for predicting the extent of fluctuations under different environments has been developed by examining the range integral of the horizontal wave number for each mode.

Repeated measures of low-frequency underwater hearing sensitivity in individuals of three pinniped species tested over 4–7 years are presented. Despite changes in the experience of the subjects and certain testing parameters (e.g., equipment and research personnel), measured underwater hearing thresholds within subjects over relatively long periods of time were quite similar at the frequencies tested (0.2–6.4 kHz). These data address the reliability of acoustic signal detection measurements over time in pinnipeds using psychophysical techniques. They are also relevant in considering the cumulative effects of aging, experience, and noise exposure on pinniped hearing in certain frequency bands.

Reliability of underwater hearing thresholds in pinnipeds

Estimates of range and depth resolution are required in order to determine computational grid spacings for matched field processing (MFP). In this paper it is shown how previous results for range-independent waveguides can be extended to account for range dependence by using standard adiabatic formulations. Significant differences in MFP resolution are observed for up-slope versus down-slope propagation due to changes in the path-integrated attenuation loss. MFP resolution is set by multipath interference lengths, so resolution estimates also relate to expected spatial scales for transmission loss fading.

Plane waves and the Pochhammer-Chree solutions are both used to describe longitudinal axially symmetric wave propagation in solid cylinders. For interpreting experiments, plane waves provide a physical explanation for signals with multiple distinct arrivals. For signals without distinct arrivals the Pochhammer-Chree solutions are often used for interpretation, but the complexity of the solutions makes accurate interpretations difficult. This paper discusses some previous misinterpretations and shows how the Pochhammer-Chree solutions relate to signals with and without distinct arrivals by considering more than just the dispersion curves from the solutions.
