Abstract Purpose To evaluate the accuracy of implant placement position using two different dental implant planning software. Materials and Methods A set of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) files from a cone beam computed tomography of a patient missing maxillary right first premolar was used. Implant planning was done using two open‐source programs: A nondental 3D Slicer/Blender (3DSB) software and a commercial dental implant treatment planning program: Blue Sky Plan 4 (BSP4). An intraoral scan of the same patient was used to create a standard tessellation language (STL) file of the maxillary arch and later printed into 20 identical casts. Ten surgical guides were printed for each group as well. A dental implant (3.8 mm × 12 mm, Biohorizons) was placed into each cast using fully guided surgical protocol. The horizontal displacements at the implant cervical platform and at the implant apex as well as the angulation displacements were measured using digital scanning of the implant scan bodies and were analyzed using a 3D compare software. Statistical analyses were conducted ( ⍺ = 0.05) using t‐test and F‐test to examine differences in trueness and precision, respectively. Results The average horizontal deviations for the platform and the apex, respectively, were 0.33 ± 0.12 mm and 0.76 ± 0.30 mm for 3DSB and 0.44 ± 0.21 mm and 0.98 ± 0.48 mm for BSP4. The average angulation deviations for 3DSB and BSB4 were 2.34 ± 0.93° and 3.07 ± 1.57°, respectively. There were no statistical differences in the means (t‐test) of the platform, apex, and angulation deviations ( p = 0.16, p = 0.19, and p = 0.18, respectively). There were statistical differences in the variances (F test) of the platform ( p = 0.043) and angulation ( p = 0.049) deviations but not the apex ( p = 0.059) deviations. Conclusions The combination of nondental open‐source software, 3D Slicer/Blender can be used to plan implant guided surgery with an accuracy similar to commercial dental software with slightly higher precision. Open‐source nondental software can be considered as an alternative in dental implant treatment planning and guided surgery.

Accuracy of Implant Placement Position Using Nondental Open‐Source Software: An In Vitro Study

Abstract Purpose To assess the effect of yttria mol% concentration and material thickness on the biaxial fracture load (N) of zirconia with and without mastication simulation. Materials and methods Disk‐shaped specimens (N = 120) of 3 mol% yttria‐partially stabilized zirconia, 3Y‐PSZ (Katana High Translucent, Kuraray Noritake), 4 mol% yttria‐partially stabilized zirconia, 4Y‐PSZ (Katana Super Translucent Multi Layered) and 5 mol% Yttria‐partially stabilized zirconia, 5Y‐PSZ (Katana Ultra Translucent Multi Layered) were prepared to thicknesses of 0.7 and 1.2 mm. For each thickness, the biaxial fracture load (N) was measured with and without mastication simulation with 1.2 million cycles at a 110‐N load and simultaneous thermal cycling at 5°C to 55°C. The data were analyzed by three‐way Analysis of Variance (α = 0.05) and Tukey‐Kramer adjusted multiple comparison test. Results Yttria mol% concentration and material thickness had a statistically significant effect on the mean biaxial fracture load (F = 388.16, p &lt; 0.001 and F = 714.33, p &lt; 0.001 respectively). The mean biaxial fracture load ranged from the highest to the lowest; 3Y‐PSZ, 4Y‐PSZ, and 5Y‐PSZ ( p = 0.012). The mean biaxial fracture load of the 1.2 mm thickness groups was significantly higher than 0.7 mm thickness at any given condition ( p = 0.002). Not all specimens survived the mastication simulation protocol. Fifty percent of the 0.7‐mm‐thick 4Y‐PSZ specimens, 70% of the 0.7‐mm‐thick 5Y‐PSZ specimens and 20% of 1.2‐mm‐thick 5Y‐PSZ specimens fractured during mastication simulation. Mastication simulation had no statistically significant effect on the biaxial fracture load (F = 1.24, p = 0.239) of the survived specimens. Conclusions Lowering yttria mol% concentration and increasing material thickness significantly increases the fracture load of zirconia. At 0.7 mm thickness, only 3Y‐PSZ survived masticatory simulation. A minimum material thickness of 1.2 mm is required for 4Y‐PSZ or 5Y‐PSZ.

A systematic search of the literature was performed to identify and characterize articles reporting the influence of removable partial denture (RPD) therapy on satisfaction and quality of life (QoL).The literature search for relevant articles published between January 1983 and March 30, 2013 was conducted using keyword searches of electronic databases and complimentary hand searches. The search strategy included the following keyword combinations (MeSH and free-text terms): fail, complication, surviv*, longevity, outcome, patient satisfaction or QoL, and denture or prosthes*, and partial and removable. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, articles focused on the effect of RPD therapy were reviewed and classified according to Strength-of-Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) criteria.The combined search identified 997 publications; 198 duplicates were identified and removed, leaving 799 references for further evaluation. After abstract review, 209 articles were selected and read; 18 reports representing findings from 4002 patients were included. While two studies were prospective comparative investigations, the majority of studies represented cross-sectional and retrospective studies. Different instruments were used to measure oral health-quality of life (OHQoL) and satisfaction. Several investigations reported a significant association of satisfaction and QoL with either (a) age of the patient, (b) number of occluding dental units replaced, (c) replacement of anterior teeth, and (d) nature of the opposing arch.A paucity of detailed investigations concerning outcomes of RPD therapy was noted. Improvement in OHQoL or satisfaction following provision of RPDs was not consistently reported. There is little evidence supporting any association between patient-reported QoL or satisfaction with technical or biological parameters of therapy. Therapeutic success of tooth replacement using RPDs should be carefully considered and compared with alternatives.

Factors Influencing Removable Partial Denture Patient‐Reported Outcomes of Quality of Life and Satisfaction: A Systematic Review

To evaluate the periodontal conditions and integrity of abutment and non-abutment teeth of patients evaluated 7 years after insertion of the removable partial denture (RPD).Twenty-two patients (17 women, 5 men) were assessed at the moment of denture insertion and 7 years later. The following items were verified in each assessment: bleeding on probing (BP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), and mobility (M), comparing direct and indirect abutment teeth, and the teeth not involved in the denture design. Tooth integrity was also evaluated and classified as intact when no caries or fractures were observed. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to reveal statistical significance between the groups (p = 0.05) as well as the Bonferrroni-corrected Mann-Whitney test for post hoc comparison. The Wilcoxon test was used for evaluation within the group over time. Fisher's exact test was applied to cross data about abutment integrity.Statistically significant differences were found for GR (baseline, p < 0.001; 7 years, p < 0.001) and PD (baseline, p = 0.001; 7 years = 0.004) between the three groups at baseline and after 7 years of follow-up. Mean BP and M values increased from initial assessment to after 7 years of RPD use in every group, but no statistically significant difference was found between the groups. For abutment integrity, a statistically significant difference (p = 0.028) was observed, and the direct abutment exhibited more (33.3%) caries and fractures.RPDs generated more periodontal damage to direct abutments, since higher gingival recession probing depth indexes, and presence of caries and fractures were observed in comparison to indirect abutments and non-abutments.

3D‐printed denture base resins: Glazing as an alternative to improve surface, mechanical, and microbiological properties

Abstract Purpose This review aims to highlight the pivotal role of the mandibular jaw movement (MJM) signal in advancing artificial intelligence (AI)‐powered technologies for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Methods A scoping review was conducted to evaluate various aspects of the MJM signal and their contribution to improving signal proficiency for users. Results The comprehensive literature analysis is structured into four key sections, each addressing factors essential to signal proficiency. These factors include (1) the comprehensiveness of research, development, and application of MJM‐based technology; (2) the physiological significance of the MJM signal for various clinical tasks; (3) the technical transparency; and (4) the interpretability of the MJM signal. Comparisons with the photoplethysmography (PPG) signal are made where applicable. Conclusions Proficiency in biosignal interpretation is essential for the success of AI‐driven diagnostic tools and for maximizing the clinical benefits through enhanced physiological insight. Through rigorous research ensuring an enhanced understanding of the signal and its extensive validation, the MJM signal sets a new benchmark for the development of AI‐driven diagnostic solutions in OSA diagnosis.
