Identifying New Frontiers of Learning and Pedagogy

ABSTRACT In this article, we present an experiential perspective on how a big data analytics course was designed and delivered to students at a major Midwestern university. In reference to the MSIS 2006 Model Curriculum , we designed this course as a level 2 course, with prerequisites in databases, computer programming, statistics, and data mining. Students in the class were mostly seniors or at the graduate level, and had a strong technical and quantitative background. We include details of concepts covered in the course, as well as summaries of four major sample course assignments used. Some of the concepts covered include large‐scale data collection and management using the Hadoop ecosystem, stream mining, visual analytics, and social network analytics. Besides Hadoop, the course also introduced various IBM and Teradata big data tools. We show how the course modules align with the intended learning goals and course objectives. A post‐course survey indicated that the structure and organization of the course helped students clearly and concisely assimilate the course content.

ABSTRACT We present a classroom exercise developed to teach the tools of determining order quantities and reorder points for inventory management. This exercise presents the students with an inventory management scenario but only provides a portion of the data that are required to set order quantities and reorder points. The activity is a type of inquiry‐based, partial information exercise that requires the students to identify the data they need and request it from the instructor to develop their recommendations. It has been used successfully at both the undergraduate and graduate level to teach inventory management concepts.

ABSTRACT Educational games are effective pedagogical tools capable of enhancing teaching. A number of organizations and journals have been promoting teaching with games and publishing educational game articles for decades. However, many instructors have never used a game in teaching, and studies show that the lack of information about games is part of the reason. To help instructors find games compatible with their course content and preferences, we present a searchable spreadsheet that samples peer‐reviewed game articles in the field of decision science. We also share our experiences in choosing and using games to address some common concerns instructors might have before adopting a game. As a result, we hope that more instructors will consider using games for instructional purposes in the future.

Abstract Capstone classes can help MBA programs achieve student learning goals and meet accreditation standards. However, such programs often fail to build the skills they are intended to develop. Technology transfer projects can be an effective way to build these skills while creating a positive economic impact. This article describes Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College's MBA program's integrative capstone experience that partners with NASA to allow student teams to commercialize unused or underutilized NASA patents to develop new products and create business startups using a 4Ps model. First, students examine Patents for intellectual property that could be transferred to new applications with commercial potential. Next, they develop a knowledge network of Partners who could assist them to commercialize the technology. Then, students identify Prospects for the proposed commercial use of the technology. Finally, they Package a newly developed, market‐ready product with strategy, financial, sales and marketing plans, and pitch these to angel investors who might fund the startup and assist them in starting the business. This article details the 20 steps in the 4Ps model and discusses student outcomes, as well as the business focus of the 29 teams that have completed the course since 2012. Benefits, challenges, and advice for delivering the 4Ps model are discussed.

Abstract Inventory management and the ability to make data‐driven decisions under uncertainty are two critical components of supply chain management. This brief describes how an Excel‐based Monte Carlo simulation of fuel and lottery purchases can be used to teach students to analyze a system with randomness. This exercise can serve as a group or individual assignment to demonstrate the ability of Monte Carlo simulation to estimate solutions involving uncertainty and to teach undergraduate business students how to implement a basic multiperiod fixed‐interval inventory policy with order‐up‐to‐levels. The important concepts of cycle service levels and confidence intervals are emphasized as are the proper implementation of one‐tailed and two‐tailed critical values. Students are encouraged to compare algebraic solutions to their simulation results.

Teaching data‐driven decision making for inventory analysis with Monte Carlo simulation

Abstract Lean production (“Lean”) is a topic frequently taught in undergraduate and graduate operations/supply chain management courses. Lean's “pull system” is a common component of the instruction, and several useful simulations have been developed that allow students to experience a pull system firsthand. While existing simulations focus on the mechanics of a pull system, the Brawny Brackets simulation focuses on improving “flow”—that is, framing a pull system in the context of layout design and batch sizing, and the waste associated with jumbled flow patterns. The robust and flexible simulation allows instructors to expand or contract the topics taught to match the course objectives and teaching time available. Brawny Brackets is a useful tool to help students learn how to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness. As this article demonstrates, the Brawny Brackets simulation can enhance student learning in operations and supply chain management courses in both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Abstract This study presents an innovative educational approach, integrating David A. Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) into financial analytics education, with a focus on the analysis of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) via the SEC's EDGAR database. Through the application of ELT, this article explores the effective melding of experiential learning methodologies with advanced analytical tools such as Python, SQL, and various data analytics platforms. The teaching exercise outlined emphasizes the importance of hands‐on activities—ranging from data scraping and analysis of SEC filings to conducting sentiment analysis—aimed at fostering not only technical proficiency among students but also enhancing their critical thinking and ethical decision‐making skills. By detailing the execution and outcomes of utilizing ELT in the context of financial analytics, this work contributes to the discourse on modern finance education, advocating for a model that prepares students for the challenges of an increasingly complex and ethical finance industry. This approach underscores the need for educational practices that are both theoretically robust and practically relevant, ensuring students are well‐equipped for dynamic roles within the finance sector.
