Analysis of Liquid Transport Performance of Cotton Knitted Fabric Made by the TransDry Technology

This article investigated the utilization of the Sammaz-14 variety of maize (Zea mays spp.) cobs for the isolation of nanocelluloses through chemical and mechanical methods. The extracted nanocelluloses were characterized by particle size analysis (PSA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Morphological analysis was performed through Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), whereas energy disperse X-ray (EDX) was used to determine the elemental composition. The isolated maize cob nanocrystals (MC-NC) and maize cob nanofibres (MC-NF) were obtained in nanoscale, as shown by PSA. Thermal analysis showed that MC-NF is more thermally stable when compared to MC-NC. FTIR revealed identical spectrums for MC-NC and MC-NF with minor deviation from the MC-UT due to the elimination of the 1700 cm−1 peak. Morphological studies showed MC-NC and MC-NF have needlelike structures, while the untreated maize cob (MC-UT) is plain due to the amorphous portion. MC-NC has higher crystallinity of 78% compared to 61% for MC-NF and 40% for MC-UT.

Extraction and Characterization of Cellulose Nanofibres and Cellulose Nanocrystals from Sammaz-14 Maize Cobs

Sweet clovers are legumes able to grow on most soils, and two sweet clover species, Melilotus albus and Melilotus officinalis have been introduced and are now cultivated on estuary land. We characterized the composition and morphology of sweet clover stems collected after the seeds had reached maturity. We also carried out histochemical analyses on transverse sections. The two species had similar morphological structures, which two fiber fractions: flexible long fibers and stiff, dense shives, accounting for about 12% and 88% of stem dry matter, respectively. Histological analysis revealed the presence of bundles of highly cellulosic bast fibers (lignocellulosic material: 71–78% of dry matter). The shives are a natural mesoporous material composed of 85–90% lignocellulosic fibers. Both fiber fractions displayed good thermal resistance to temperatures up to 225°C and a moderate affinity for water. These two types of fibers are similar to those of flax and hemp, suggesting their possible use for the same types of applications. Sweet clovers therefore constitute a new source of fibers that can be cultivated on wet and saline soils not otherwise suitable for agriculture.

Sweet Clovers, a Source of Fibers Adapted for Growth on Wet and Saline Soils

This study aims to optimize the mechanical and rheological properties of cementitious mortar by incorporating hemp fibers (HF) and brick waste powder (BWP), with the goal of developing a more sustainable and eco-friendly construction material. Using response surface methodology (RSM), different proportions of HF (0, 0.25, 0.5%) and BWP (0, 10, 20%) were tested to optimize flowability, compressive and flexural strength. The experimental results indicate that the optimal composition, 0.25% HF and 10% BWP, significantly enhances mechanical performance while maintaining workability. Furthermore, the outcomes show that adding 10% BWP and around 0.5% HF considerably reduced the rheological characteristics, as seen by a longer flow time in comparison to other combinations. The ideal cement substitution rates, as determined by RSM, were 11.46% of BWP and 0.31% of HF. The study demonstrates the feasibility of using natural fibers and recycled materials in eco-friendly mortars, offering a sustainable alternative for construction. The predictive accuracy of the RSM model was validated through experimental verification, with results deviating by less than 5%. These findings contribute to the advancement of green building materials and sustainable construction practices.

Selected Parameters of Huacaya Alpacas Fibers and Olkuska Sheep Wool

Natural fibers and associated products have recently gained significant attention due to their sustainable and eco-friendly attributes, presenting them as viable substitutes for petroleum-based synthetic fibers such as Kevlar, carbon, and glass. Among the various types of natural fibers, ramie (Boehmeria nivea) has been recognized as one of the strongest lignocellulosic fibers due to its high cellulose content, exceptional mechanical properties, and economic viability. The present work provides a comprehensive investigation of ramie, focusing on its physical attributes, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and durability under different exposure conditions. The durability of ramie is evaluated by exposing the fibers to alkaline, acidic, and aqueous environments, revealing variations in tensile strength, cellulose crystallinity depletion, and surface deterioration. Results indicate notable differences between partially degummed (PDG) and bleached (B) ramie fibers, with the latter showing approximately 12% higher strength. The durability study revealed degradation percentages of 40–45% under alkaline conditions, 30–35% under acidic conditions, and 50–55% in aqueous conditions. These findings highlight the need for strategies to enhance ramie fibers' resistance to environmental degradation for various applications.

For decades, agricultural waste-derived natural fibers have been explored to reduce plastic waste impacts and improve waste management. However, natural fiber-reinforced composites often underperform compared to high-cost synthetic fibers. This study aims to enhance the performance of areca sheath fiber (ASF)-reinforced epoxy composites through minimal additions (3, 5, and 7 wt%) of low-cost thermoplastic polybutylene terephthalate monofilament (PBTM). The effects of alkali-treated ASF fiber loadings (30, 40, 50, and 60 wt%) and structural modifications on continuous fiber-reinforced composites were examined. PBTM was used to fabricate ASF-reinforced composites with sandwich and random structures. Compared to ASF-reinforced epoxy composites, the sandwich structures increased tensile and flexural strengths by up to 83% and 45%, respectively. Modifying 50 wt% ASF-reinforced composite with 7 wt% PBTM increased the tensile modulus (1.5 to 3.4 GPa), flexural breaking energy (1.1 to 1.7 MJ/m3), and impact strength (24.5 to 36.7 kJ/m2). This modification also significantly enhanced thermal stability and reduced water absorption, as confirmed by thermogravimetric and water absorption analyses. Optical microscopic fractogram characterization indicated that fiber surface treatment improved interface compatibility, while structural modifications of composites enhanced their load-bearing capacity. These findings suggest the suitability of ASF-reinforced PBTM-modified hybrid composites in construction and other structural applications.
