This article is designed to help consumers sort out the different finishes and effectively choose which product would be best for their purpose. First, we cover the causes and mechanisms of wood degradation. It is important to know what we are protecting wood from and why. Then we describe in detail the different kinds of clear wood finishes and how they are designed to work. We also cover the attributes of wood as a building material, which explains why people are so interested in using it in the first place.

Advances in technology have resulted in the need for electronic devices to continue functioning even when placed in harsh environments. Widespread use of cell phones, laptop computers, and other personal electronic devices, the increased number of electronic controls in home appliances, and the ever more extensive utilization of digital technology in the automotive industry have led to a growing demand for printed circuit boards (PCBs) that can perform under difficult conditions. Conformal coatings provide a protective barrier that enables the PCBs to function in these demanding environments. This growth in demand comes despite the cost and numerous difficulties associated with the application of these coatings. Many conformal coatings manufacturers are investing in the development of new technologies that minimize these difficulties. Others are involved in developing disruptive technologies that will serve as alternatives to traditional conformal coatings processes.

Increasingly demanding environmental regulations for industrial maintenance coatings have put pressure on manufacturers and users of both solventborne and waterborne coating systems. The lowering of volatile organic compound (VOC) levels to below 100 g/L is being considered for industrial maintenance coatings in many regions of the U.S. This article discusses the development of materborne acrylic latex polymers for use in high performance, VOC-compliant coatings applied to steel and concrete structures. Formulation and coating properties of these polymers are described, with an emphasis on comparisons of performance to traditional, higher VOC waterborne and solventborne coatings.

Low-VOC Waterborne Coatings for Use in Industrial Maintenance Painting

The performance of 35 finishes (clear water-repellent Preservatives; lightly pigmented, water-repellent preservatives; semitransparent stains; solid-color stains; and paints) applied to newly planed vertical-grained; factory-planed, flat-grained; or saw-textured, vertical-grained western redcedar bevel siding was evaluated for cracking, erosion, and general appearance over 14 years of outdoor exposure at two sites (Madison, WI, and Gulfport, MS). Service life was dependent on the wood surface and increased in the following order: clear water-repellent preservatives; lightly pigmented, water-repellent preservatives; semitransparent stains; solid color stains; and paints. The performance was about the same for both the flat-grained and vertical-grained smooth-planed bevel siding but was greatly improved for almost all finish systems on the saw-textured western redcedar bevel siding.

This work concerns the development of environmentally friendly encapsulation technology, specifically designed to incorporate corrosion indicators, inhibitors, and self-healing agents into a coating, in such a way that the delivery of the indicators and inhibitors is triggered by the corrosion process, and the delivery of self-healing agents is triggered by mechanical damage to the coating. Encapsulation of the active corrosion control ingredients allows the incorporation of desired autonomous corrosion control functions such as: early corrosion detection, hidden corrosion detection, corrosion inhibition, and self-healing of mechanical damage into a coating. The technology offers the versatility needed to include one or several corrosion control functions into the same coating.The development of the encapsulation technology has progressed from the initial proof-of-concept work, in which a corrosion indicator was encapsulated into an oil-core (hydrophobic) microcapsule and shown to be delivered autonomously, under simulated corrosion conditions, to a sophisticated portfolio of micro carriers (organic, inorganic, and hybrid) that can be used to deliver a wide range of active corrosion ingredients at a rate that can be adjusted to offer immediate as well as long-term corrosion control. The micro carriers have been incorporated into different coating formulas to test and optimize the autonomous corrosion detection, inhibition, and self-healing functions of the coatings. This paper provides an overview of progress made to date and highlights recent technical developments, such as improved corrosion detection sensitivity, inhibitor test results in various types of coatings, and highly effective self-healing coatings based on green chemistry.
