ABSTRACT: The evolution of the Late TriassicNaybandBasin in central Iranwas influenced by climatic changes and tectonic events. An increase in siliciclastic input and a corresponding carbonate productivity crisis in theQhrogchi area in central Iranwere initiated by the onset of a relatively humid episode in the Carnian, followed by arid to semi-arid conditions in the Norian and Rhaetian. Carbonate sediments of theNayband Formationwere deposited in a range of environments, from outer ramp to marginal marine environments. The rich benthic fauna is predominantly restricted to the limestone bedswithin the upper part of succession. Bivalves, hydrozoans (Heterastridium), calcareous algae, corals and sclerosponges are recorded. The latter two groups form patch reefs on the middle ramp. Benthic foraminifera show strong affinities with assemblages reported from the central Tethys, whereas others are also well-known from the Alpine region and from the eastern Tethys.

Environmental significance of benthic foraminifera and microfacies of central Tethyan Upper Triassic strata, central Iran

ABSTRACT: TheCambrian strata at the northwestern margin of the North China Platform in InnerMongolia hold thick oolitic-grain bank deposits.Generally, the strata are dominated by calcareous mudstone of shelf facies in the lower part, micritic limestone consisting of deep to middle ramp facies in the middle part, and oolitic limestone encompassing shallow ramp to grain bank facies in the upper part of each formation. The shelf and deep ramp facies are the result of relative sea-level rise, while oolitic limestones developed in response to relative sea-level fall. Microscopically, the studied ooids are represented by radial crystal structures and concentric laminations with or without cores, single crystal or neomorphosed ooids, and highly bored ooids. The size andmorphology of the ooids indicate a two-fold mechanical influence of microbes; constructive in the Miaolingian and destructive in the Furongian ooids. Based on these observations, it can be inferred that microbes (predominantly composed of filamentous fossils of cyanobacteria) excreted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to develop multiple bacterial biofilms microbial mats. The subsequent decay of the EPS through sulfate reducing bacteria most likely caused precipitation around these ooids. The depositional style of ooids occupying the upper parts of the formations, and their possible genesis from microbes provide clue for regional correlation, as well as affirm biological control in the formation of ooids.

Cambrian ooids, their genesis and relationship to sea-level rise and fall: A case study of the Qingshuihe section, Inner Mongolia, China

ABSTRACT: The Oligo-Miocene Transition (OMT) is one of the most important climatic transitions of the last 30 million years. This short period of climate warming coincides with a few biotic turnovers, which are well known in deeper marine settings where stratigraphic successions yield a detailed record; in shallowmarine environments they have been proved difficult to recognize as the occurrence and absence of certain taxa due to ecological preferences hamper the study. This study focuses on the Case CnÃ© section in the late Oligocene of the Tertiary Piedmont Basin (TPB) as it represents a gradual transgressive event, which shows the drowning of a locally developed reef complex and development of a deeper marine sedimentary setting influenced by gravity flow mechanics. Larger foraminifera biostratigraphy was used to date the section to the late Oligocene (SBZ23); preliminary strontium isotope data confirms this result. Using sedimentological, semi-quantitative microfacies and geochemical analysis the sedimentary history of the section was reconstructed and divided into four major phases: the drowning of the reef complex, a short prograding phase of the fluvial system, the onset of gravity flow mechanics and a final transgressive phase with an initial turbiditic influence which continues regionally into the Miocene.

Integrated stratigraphy from a transgressive upper Oligocene section in NW Italy

意大利西北部上渐新统海侵层序的综合地层学研究

The carbonate-dominated Upper Cretaceous Ilam Formation is representative of an important reservoir in the Zagros Basin. In this study, planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy of the Ilam Formation was investigated in the Kuh-e-Surgah section in western Iran. In the studied section, the 170 m thick Ilam Formation is mainly composed of imestones with shale intercalations. The formation conformably overlies and underlies the Surgah and Gurpi formations, respectively. Twelve genera and 24 species of planktonic foraminifera were identified. The following planktonic foraminiferal biozones were identified: the Dicarinella asymetrica Total Range Zone (latest Coniacian- late Santonian), the Globotruncanita elevata Partial Range Zone (Santonian to early Campanian), the Globotruncana ventricosa Interval Zone (middle to late Campanian.), the Radotruncana calcarata Total Range Zone (late Campanian.), the Globotruncanella havanensis Partial Range Zone (late Campanian) and the Globotruncana aegyptiaca Interval Zone (late to latest Campanian). In general, the biozones show that the Ilam Formation in the studied section is latest Coniacian-late Campanian in age. The Santonian-Campanian boundary in the Kuh-e-Surgah section correlates with the Globotruncanita elevata Partial Range Zone. The recognized biozones in the Ilam Formation are comparable with those recorded in other parts of the Tethyan Realm. The crinoid species Marsupites testudinarius is absent in the studied section. Generally, the last occurrence of this cosmopolitan species indicates the base of the Campanian stage. The Santonian/Campanian boundary was placed in the lower part of the Globotruncanita elevata Partial Range Zone at the base of the Ilam Formation in the studied section.

Planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and determination of the Santonian-Campanian boundary in the Zagros sedimentary basin, SW Iran

The Devonian-Carboniferous boundary is allegedly marked by one of the most catastrophic global extinctions associated with sedimentation of the Hangenberg black shale. A dense sampling of the Kowala section in the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland, challenges this view, showing that the faunal dynamics across the Hangenberg black shalewas not more dramatic than that across the preceding Kowala black shale. Quantitative analysis and biologically meaningful conodont apparatus study of the Kowala material offer probably the most complete record of faunal change in the latest Famennian and earliest Tournaisian among those sampled bed-by-bed for ammonoids and conodonts. It appears that the faunal dynamics of both cephalopods and conodonts was controlled by environmental changes that resulted in numerous immigrations and disappearances of particular lineages. Only a small fraction of lineages persisted long enough at the place, and transformed their morphology fast enough, to leave a record of their evolution. Most of the evolution apparently took place elsewhere. Locations of remote refugia where these lineages evolved in the time span bracketed by the Kowala and Hangenberg black shale events remain to be identified. Conodont apparatus study on geographically distant Vietnamese locality Cat Ba provides evidence that at least in the latest Famennian some conodont species unknown from Poland were present in Vietnam. Moreover, the contribution of species known from both localities to Polish and Vietnamese fossil assemblages was dramatically different.

Evolution and migration of conodonts and ammonoids near the end of Devonian recorded in distant localities

Five alveolinid species were identified from the Naqb Formation of Bahariya Oasis; Glomalveolina telementensis (Paleocene), Alveolina ankarensis (early Ypresian), Alveolina decipiens (early Ypresian), Alveolina recondita (early Ypresian), Alveolina cf. vredenburgi (early Ypresian). They are indicative of the SBZ7-8 Zone. The studied section is mainly composed of multiple Alveolina horizons. An index marker worth mentioning is Alveolina decipiens which is also recorded from the El Nusf Formation of the Farafra Oasis; this allows for correlation between the two sections. Alveolina decipiens of the El Nusf Formation is associated with Nummulites solitarius and Nummulites frassi and indicates that this horizon belongs to SBZ7-8. One species was recorded from the Minia Formation, Nile Valley; Alveolina ruetimeyeri (late Ypresian), SBZ12. Its occurrence in highly carbonate sediments allowed for paleoecologic interpretations.

Thanetian-Ypresian Alveolines from the Western Desert and the Nile Valley, Egypt

Lithological cycles with a repetitive pattern of sandstone overlain by limestone or shale comprise the middle Minnelusa Formation in the Black Hills region, USA. At least eight lithological cycles were observed at Boulder Canyon Road (BCR), eight at Vanocker Canyon Road (VCR) and four at Hot Brook Canyon (HBC). These rocks were deposited in a nearshore to offshore marine environment, and the shale and limestone intervals at the top of these cycles yielded conodonts. Five biostratigraphically distinct Middle to Upper Pennsylvanian conodont faunas were recovered from these marine units. An upper Desmoinesian assemblage was recovered from VCR cycle 1. Two Missourian assemblages were recovered, one indicative of the Idiognathodus cancellosus Zone from VCR cycle 3 and the other indicative of the Streptognathodus gracilis Zone from VCR cycle 6. Two Virgilian assemblages were recovered, one indicative of the Heckelina simulator Zone from VCR cycle 7, VCR cycle 8 and HBC cycle 2 and the other indicative of the lower part of the “Streptognathodus” group 4 virgilicus Zone from HBC cycle 3. Two conodont biofacies were recognized within the middle Minnelusa, the low energy, offshore, Idiognathodontidae-Idioprioniodus biofacies and the higher energy, nearshore Idiognathodontidae-Hindeodus biofacies.

We report the first discovery of vase-shaped microfossils (VSMs) and possible multichambered foraminifera from the Ediacaran rocks of Saudi Arabia. The Ediacaran successions of Saudi Arabia are well exposed in the northwestern and central part of the Arabian plate but are relatively understudied due to the lack of economic potential. The exposures can be found in different small sedimentary basins distributed along the flanks of Najd Fault system of the western Arabian Plate. The Dhaiqa sub-basin located near the historic city of Al-Ula contains some of the best exposures of Ediacaran Mattar and Dhaiqa Formations with collective exposure almost 400 m thick. These formations (especially the Dhaiqa Formation) were investigated to describe sedimentary facies, depositional environment, and possible microfossils. This study focuses on the identification of vase-shaped microfossils and possible trochamminid foraminifera of Ediacaran age that are herein recognized for the first time in Saudi Arabia. Outcrop samples were thin-sectioned and analyzed to reveal nine sedimentary facies belonging to four facies associations. The observed microfossils were found in a total of four samples from the cherty/siliceous carbonate and sandy microbialite facies. The microfossils are observed to be associated with diagenetic chert, which is abundant in these facies. The two facies contain a sparse microfossil assemblage with vase-shaped microfossils, which are single-chambered microfossils of uncertain taxonomic affinity, and possible multichambered agglutinated foraminifera that resemble trochamminids.

Vase-shaped microfossils and possible trochamminid foraminifera from the Ediacaran Dhaiqa Formation of Saudi Arabia

We present a simple, quick, and high-resolution (approx.10 cm) method for calculating almost continuous calciumcarbonate (CaCO3) proxy records in deep-marine sediment cores based on the well-known dependence of NGR (natural gamma ray) on sediment clay content. The method used in this study is based on the assumption that sediment composition along the SAT (South Atlantic Transect) consists of two components: carbonate and clay. This assumption is reasonably accurate for the region under investigation. At carbonate-rich Site U1583 (66–97 wt% CaCO3), calculated CaCO3 wt% contents are within 4.18% at 1 standard deviation (r) of geochemical analyses of the CaCO3 wt% contents of discrete samples (measured using a coulometer), while at the more lithologically variable Site U1557 (0.1–92 wt% CaCO3), they are within 15.6% at 1r. Results indicate good to excellent correlations between the NGR- and coulometry-derived datasets, supporting the use of this method for carbonate stratigraphy, paleoceanography, and paleoclimate reconstructions. We provide an equation to derive CaCO3 wt% from NGR based on the SAT datasets. The procedure described below can be used to construct the higher resolution proxy CaCO3 records at other sites worldwide compared to discrete CaCO3 values. This method can assist with shipboard lithology determination and can guide core sampling.

Estimating CaCO3 Content Based on Natural Gamma Ray (NGR) in Deep-Ocean Sediment Cores

The East Pisco Basin, occupying the coastal plain of Peru between 13°S and 16°S, is widely known for its extensive Eocene to Quaternary biosiliceous deposits and excellent preservation of fossil marine vertebrates. Biochronologic studies published over the past 35 years record a hiatus of about 13 million years (*32–19 Ma) separating the youngest Paleogene deposits (Otuma Formation) from the oldest Neogene deposits (Chilcatay Formation). We describe a newly identified Lower Miocene depositional sequence that lies below documented Chilcatay strata, rich in diatoms and benthic foraminifers, which we name the Tunga Formation. A low-latitude diatom assemblage from the Tunga Formation indicates an age of 21.6 to 20.5 Ma age, whereas an ash within basal Tunga strata yields an 206Pb/238U weighted mean age of 20.58 ± 0.13 Ma. Benthic foraminifer paleodepth analysis and the diatom assemblage of the Tunga Formation indicate deposition took place along the continental margin at upper bathyal depths under hypoxic conditions beneath highly productive waters, a scenario also supported by the presence of abundant clupeoid fish scales and dolomitized horizons. The Tunga Formation is characterized by a profound scarcity of cetacean fossils, unlike the cetacean-rich neritic sediments of the overlying Chilcatay Formation.
