Knowing the effects of different parameters on the drilling fluid is an essential part of a successful and safe drilling operation. High pressure and high temperature conditions have opposing effects on the fluid density which has an important effect on the bottom-hole pressure. So for estimating precise bottom-hole pressure, it is essential to take into account these opposite effects on drilling fluid compression or expansion. In this study, Bingham-plastic model is considered as drilling fluid to simulate drilling operation and develop temperature and pressure distribution through the wellbore. The effects of variation in drilling fluid flow rate, drilling fluid specific heat and inlet mud temperature are explored and discussed for an oil-based mud. Also, the effects of frictional pressure loss, pressure loss in the drill bit and, drill string rotation are considered as internal heat sources in the wellbore. Results show that thermal interaction is required for accurate prediction of the bottom-hole pressure. Variations of different parameters change temperature distribution in the wellbore which consequently changes the bottom-hole pressure. The results show that considering the variation of rheological properties, bottom-hole pressure prediction may change as much as 685 psi (about 2.30%) which is considerable. Model predictions were compared with the field data for validation of the model.

Effect of temperature variation on the accurate prediction of bottom-hole pressure in well drilling

Biofuels are attracted by many investigators because of its environment friendly nature and contribution in the reduction of global warming. The advent of nanotechnology improved the performance of the biofuels while including the nanoparticles in it. Hence, the research focussing on the performance improvement and emission reduction of engine using biofules blended with nanoparticles is a noteworthy. In the present work, an investigation was performed on Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDI) engine equipped with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) setup to analyze the engine performance, combustion and emission characteristics at variable injection pressures by using rice bran biodiesel blended with ceria (CeO2) and zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles. Experimental work was done using fuel samples of pure diesel (D100), biodiesel (B30), biodiesel with 15% EGR (B30 + 15%EGR), biodiesel blended with 50 ppm ceria nanoparticles with 15% EGR (B30 + 50CeO2 + 15% EGR), biodiesel blended with 50 ppm zirconia nanoparticles with 15% EGR (B30 + 50ZrO2 + 15%EGR) and biodiesel blended with 50 ppm of ceria and zirconia nanoparticles with 15% EGR (B30 + 25ZrO2 + 25CeO2 + 15%EGR) under various load conditions and injection pressures. Based on the experimental work, the B30 + 25ZrO2 + 25CeO2 + 15%EGR fuel sample displayed better performance compared to other samples. The results showed that the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of B30 + 25ZrO2 + 25CeO2 + 15%EGR fuel sample was increased by 8% and the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was reduced by 9% compared to D100. The combustion characteristics showed that the heat release rate and cylinder pressure were increased by 4.3% and 2.8% respectively. Further, the sample B30 + 25ZrO2 + 25CeO2 + 15%EGR decreased the exhaust emission of CO, HC, and NOx by 30%, 19%, and 13.3% respectively.

Major and trace element concentrations in fresh and altered coals in outcrops and coalfields from Táchira and Mérida states (Venezuela), as well as from Napo and Pastaza provinces (Ecuador), have been determined to establish inorganic parameters not dependent of weathering effects. Noteworthy is that the Ti/Zr ratio is approximately constant in each sedimentary basin even for great distances (>100 km). Worldwide data of trace elements analysis in coal samples support the stated Ti/Zr ratio constancy in different basins for fresh and weathered ones. Therefore, Ti/Zr ratio can be considered a rapid tool to easily identify coal seam correlations.

This experimental work investigates the emission, performance, and combustion study of Pongamia biodiesel fuel with the addition of titanium oxide (TiO2) in four-stroke, single-cylinder, water-cooled, compression-ignition (CI) engine. The TiO2 nanoparticle was included with Pongamia biodiesel (PBD100) fuel at the different PPM of 50 and 100. These experimental results proved that biodiesel with TiO2 nanoparticle has improved combustion when compared to biodiesel fuel. The emissions of HC, the smoke of biodiesel with 100 ppm TiO2 nanoparticle are lower than biodiesel fuel by 2.1%, 2.7% at full load. NOx and CO emissions are decreased by 3.8% and 1.9%, respectively compared to biodiesel. As per the performance fronts, specific fuel consumption improved with improvement in brake thermal efficiency for Pongamia biodiesel with 50 and 100 ppm TiO2 nanoparticle. The TiO2 nanoparticle inclusion at different ppm significantly increases the peak pressure and the net heat release rate values for Pongamia biodiesel. Hence, the Pongamia biodiesel with TiO2 nanoadditives is an appropriate substitute fuel for diesel engine.

Emission, performance, and combustion study on nanoparticle-biodiesel fueled diesel engine

This study explores the environmental and economic impacts of aviation emissions, focusing on the changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using real flight data from Batman Airport, the research examines aircraft emissions, global warming potential (GWP), specific environmental impacts (SEI), and specific eco-cost (SEC) from 2018 to 2023. The analysis reveals significant reductions in total emissions of greenhouse gases (CO2, HC, CO, NOx) during 2020, while per-passenger emissions increased. Compared to pre-pandemic levels, total CO2 emissions in 2020 decreased by 31.45%, while emissions per passenger rose by 9.7%. Similar patterns were observed for HC, CO, and NOx. The pandemic-induced reduction in aviation activity led to a 32.1% decrease in GWP and a 31.7% reduction in SEC for the same period. However, the rapid recovery in 2021 saw emissions and environmental costs return to near pre-pandemic levels by 2023. This research provides valuable insights into the long-term environmental effects of reduced air travel during COVID-19 and highlights strategies to mitigate aviation-related emissions, such as reducing taxi times to loer pollutants and their associated environmental costs.

Global warming potential and enviroeconomic impact of commercial flights: A pre- to post-COVID-19 analysis

The adsorption effect of sodium dihydrogen phosphate-modified kaolin (H2P-Kaolin) on heavy metals during the pyrolysis process of municipal solid waste (MSW) was investigated. The retention rates (R) of heavy metals (HMs) Cr, Cd, Pb, and As in MSW pyrolysis were 45.01%, 32.49%, 55.81%, and 30.53%, which were increased to 75.54%, 53.37%, 79.68%, and 73.47% with the addition of H2P-Kaolin modified by an optimal impregnation ratio of 5%. Within the scope of the experimental research, an increase in pyrolysis temperature or a decrease in the addition ratio led to a decrease in the retention of heavy metals. XPS analysis showed that the heavy metal adsorption by H2P-Kaolin was mainly due to the reaction of silico-aluminate and phosphate with heavy metals, where the role of phosphate was the main factor for the enhanced adsorption capacity. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) indicates that the frontier orbital energy gap values of CrCl3, CdCl2, PbCl2, and As4 molecules with Kaolin are 0.073 ha, 0.154 ha, 0.122 ha, and 0.147 ha. These values with NaPO3 are 0.026 ha, 0.106 ha, 0.074 ha, and 0.099 ha, respectively. NaPO3 has a higher reactivity with heavy metal molecules than Kaolin, and both active substances in H2P-Kaolin have low reactivity with the heavy metal Cd. This paper combines experimental and mechanistic studies to provide a technical basis for the development of novel additives to control HMs during MSW pyrolysis.

Gas production from the pyrolysis of oil shale as affected by Fe 2 O 3

In the mid-to-late stages of gas drive production, the substantial intake of gas by the pump negatively impacts pumping efficiency. Gas anchors are employed for gas-liquid separation to enhance pump efficiency in oil fields. However, the gas separation performance of gas anchors is influenced by various factors. Their gas separation efficiency has inherent limitations. To overcome these challenges and improve pumping efficiency, innovative approaches are necessary. This study investigates the effect of coatings on liquid flow within the center tube of gas anchors using both experimental methods and numerical simulations. The results demonstrate that adding a coating to the center tube wall enhances liquid-phase flow. Mass production and water content increase progressively with the use of different coatings, in the following order: the original inner wall, nano coating, graphene epoxy coating. The minimum gas-liquid ratio corresponding to the lowest liquid production rate on the original inner wall is 250 m3/m3. The gas-liquid ratio corresponding to the lowest liquid production of the other two coatings is between 300–400 m3/m3. Concurrently, the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the gas anchor decreases. The pressure gradient with coating is 0.02–6.61 Pa/m lower than that of the original inner wall. Numerical simulations further reveal the fluid flow characteristics inside both the uncoated and coated center tubes. The presence of the coating reduces the intensity of fluid backflow and attenuates the pressure gradient changes. The difference in flow velocity between gas and water is between 0.003–0.004 m/s. The calculated dynamic viscosity suggests that the coating's influence on gas-liquid two-phase flow is primarily due to the complexity of flow direction induced by varying wall wettability. The dynamic viscosity of the fluid is closely tied to its flow velocity, impacting the system's frictional pressure loss. This study indicates that applying coatings to the center tube of gas anchors benefits liquid flow. It offers a new insights and guidance for enhancing pumping efficiency.
