Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of process parameters of viscose air-jet yarns produced by the Autoairo yarn spinning machine on the physical and mechanical properties of yarns and their influence on the properties of single jersey weft knitted fabrics. Design/methodology/approach The yarn count in this study was 19.68 tex and the gauge of single jersey weft knitting machine was 24. The process parameters were the spinning draft, delivery speed and nozzle air pressure. The yarn samples were evaluated based on yarn irregularity and imperfections, as well as hairiness and tensile properties. The pilling, bursting strength, drape coefficient, shrinkage, air permeability and dyeability of single jersey weft knitted samples were also evaluated. The Taguchi method was used to design of experiments. Moreover, the effect of independent variables on the physical properties of the yarn was tested statistically at a 95% level of confidence using analysis of variance method. Findings The properties of the yarns evaluated showed that spinning draft and delivery speed can be introduced as two effective parameters on different properties of yarns. Moreover, the pilling of weft-knitted fabrics was affected by yarn parameters i.e. spinning draft and delivery speed statistically at a 95% confidence level. Originality/value In this experimental study, the structural characteristics of air jet yarns produced by the Autoairo11(Saurer Group) machine and the physical and mechanical properties of weft-knitted fabrics were analyzed by the authors. The literature review did not reveal any experimental work that evaluates these process parameters of yarn spinning integrated and its effect on a wide range of properties of weft-knitted fabrics.

Effect of process parameters of viscose air–jet yarns on physical and mechanical properties of weft knitted fabrics

粘胶空气喷射纱线工艺参数对纬编针织物物理机械性能的影响

Purpose This study aims to investigate into the adsorption mechanism of heavy metal ions Pb 2+ and methylene blue (MB) dyes on an adsorbent-web formed from kapok fibres (KP) and polypropylene fibres (PP). Design/methodology/approach Initially, the KP underwent pre-treatment with NaClO 2 solution, and their morphology and structure changes were examined through scanning electron microscope images. Subsequently, the KP fibres were blended with PP fibres at a ratio of 70 / 30 and processed through a laboratory carding machine to form a fibre web, which was then secured using a heat press to fabricate the adsorbent-web. The resultant adsorbent-web was subjected to evaluation for the adsorption process. Findings The findings revealed that the adsorbent-web produced via the dry-laid method exhibited promising attributes, and the adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Parameters such as adsorbent-web porosity, solution pH, and adsorption thermodynamics exerted notable influences on the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent-web. Notably, the adsorbent-web demonstrated remarkable reusability and desorption capacity. In the fifth cycle, the adsorption capacity of adsorbent-web for MB and Pb 2+ ions only decreased by 9.13% and 11.48%, respectively, compared to the first cycle. The desorption efficiency of the adsorbent-web exceeded 90% for MB and over 73% for Pb 2+ ions. Originality/value This study makes a significant contribution to the practical application of KP as an adsorbent-web for treating waste from the textile dyeing industry.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the impact of minimalism, attitude, perceived behavioral control and subjective norm on green purchase intention in the fashion industry using the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Design/methodology/approach The study used the mall-intercept technique to collect data from shopping malls across six cities in India by administering a structured questionnaire. The sample comprised 230 responses, which were analyzed using the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings The findings highlighted that minimalism, subjective norm, attitude and perceived behavior control significantly affect the purchase intention of green apparel in fashion industries. This strengthens the validity of the TPB in explaining green purchasing intention among educated individuals from Generations Y and Z in India. Practical implications This study is crucial for corporate leaders and academia as it embarks on new findings from young Indian consumers’ perspective. Minimalistic principles shape consumers’ purchasing attitude by enhancing their confidence and ability to adopt green consumption practices. Originality/value The study advances the comprehension of sustainable fashion marketing in India by investigating the correlation between customers’ minimalism and purchasing intention regarding sustainable apparel.

Unraveling the impact of minimalism on green purchase intention: insights from theory of planned behavior

Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to explore three dimensions (initiative, conformity and distance) of followership role orientation among lower-level managers in apparel factories, and second, to examine to what extent these orientations are influenced by the position held and the tasks performed. Design/methodology/approach Pragmatism is selected as the research philosophy and a quantitative research design is adopted. Empirical data is obtained through a combination of exploratory and descriptive research strategies. The research was conducted in eight Bulgarian enterprises, and 219 managers took part in it. Findings Lower-level managers in clothing factories indicate low-to-moderate initiative orientation, moderate-to-high conformity orientation and low-to-moderate distance orientation. It is found that the position held and tasks performed influence the followership role orientations of lower-level managers. The influence is most significant regarding the conformity orientation – foremen and storekeepers show moderate-to-high conformity, QC supervisors are neutral and technologists express low-to-moderate conformity. Originality/value This paper is the first to study the followership role orientations of lower-level managers in apparel manufacturers. A unique combination of dimensions is used to measure follower orientations and a new assessment tool is described and validated. Thus, the study fills a significant gap in followership theory and enriches the practical toolkit for managing employee relations in clothing factories.

Followership role orientations in clothing factories: a lower-level managers’ perspective

Purpose This study aims to investigate the varying color-difference thresholds for textiles under various illuminants. Design/methodology/approach To determine color-difference thresholds, 108 fabric samples with widely ranging colors were spectrophotometrically measured and visually assessed under four illumination conditions (correlated color temperatures of 2,856 K and 6,504 K; illuminances of 100 lx and 2,000 lx). Findings The mean spectrophotometric color-difference threshold (solely based on the textile’s physical color attributes in machine vision) was 4.22 Δ E * ab ; thus, a mechanically measured color difference between two textiles (regardless of illuminant) of less than 4.22 Δ E * ab indicated individuals’ inability to differentiate between two textiles. The calculated color-difference thresholds, which reflected the color differences perceived by people considering textiles’ physical color attributes and the environmental factors in which they were observed, were higher than the spectrophotometric thresholds. This meant that under various illuminants, people had greater difficulty perceiving color differences than mechanically measured spectrophotometric thresholds. Particularly, larger discrepancies between the two threshold types occurred under reddish illuminants of 2,856 K than under bluish-white illuminants of 6,504 K. Furthermore, the extent to which people perceived color differences as distinct from actual differences under illumination was larger for greenish-blue textiles than for textiles of other hues. Originality/value The determined spectrophotometric and calculative color-difference thresholds for textiles can help fashion companies predict consumers’ perceptions of the colors of their textile products under various illuminants and, accordingly, appropriately plan colors of products and create standards for color quality control.
