The aims of CoDesign are:    ·         to report new research and scholarship in principles, procedures and techniques relevant to collaboration in design;    -         to act as an international forum for discussion of collaborative design issues;    ·         to foster communication between academic researchers and industry practitioners concerned with collaborative design;    ·         to encourage a flow of information across the boundaries of the disciplines contributing to collaborative design;    ·         to stimulate ideas and provoke widespread discussion.    CoDesign is inclusive, encompassing collaborative, co-operative, concurrent, human-centred, participatory, socio-technical and community design among others. Research in any design domain concerned specifically with the nature of collaboration design is of relevance to the Journal.

A systematic literature review on co-design education and preparing future designers for their role in co-design

In response to the environmental and social challenges of an uncertain future, practitioners and communities across Europe and beyond have started to engage with the concept of 'resilience' and experiment with forms of local resilience. However, many of these initiatives tend to remain localised, isolated projects, with little capacity to instigate broader change and at risk to disappear by not having the means to become sustainable in the longer term. We suggest that one way of sustaining and scaling local resilience practices is by developing digital tools that could enable connections and knowledge sharing across locations, through commoning in the digital realm. In this paper, we introduce the specific co-design process we devised with the aim to develop an initial 'brief' for potential tools. By creating a co-design process that is situated, mediated, networked and open-source, we argue that the commoning process initiated in this project has the potential to evolve and expand, beyond the project time and initial user base—an essential quality in the context of collectively enhancing urban resilience through knowledge sharing and mutual support.

Supportive technologies for autistic individuals are promising in principle, yet their uptake remains limited. Critics argue that in current designs of supportive technologies, autism is mostly framed as a 'disorder' whose limitations can be pragmatically compensated for. To increase uptake, designers should get a better handle on how to incorporate the full richness of the autistic experience into the design process. This paper presents an integrative framework of the autistic lifeworld, called Autistic Lifeworld Design (hereafter: ALD). ALD evolved in a transdisciplinary research setting, substantiated by 11 design case studies with autistic young adults as well as theoretical inquiries into enactivism, design and autism. It consists of four dimensions of experience – sensory, habitual, social, and affective –, each providing specific pointers on how to better understand how autistic people experience the world and how supportive technologies may complement that experience. By adopting an enactive approach, ALD enables a reframing of supportive technology as helping to sustain different levels of homoeostasis. It offers a novel lens that allows designers to put the lived experiences of autistic individuals at the centre of the design process, with special attention to the role of bodily structures and processing in shaping these experiences.

Participatory design to address common challenges in digital democracy in a remote and asynchronous setting: a case study of a citizen participation platform for the Seoul Metropolitan Library

Participatory Design (PD) emerged alongside the push for democracy during the technological advancements of the 1960s. Despite its frequent application, the literature lacks sufficient studies addressing the 'what', 'how much', and 'how' PD contributes in terms of both processes and outcomes – leaving a gap in supporting the arguments for its use. This study seeks to address this gap by explicitly exploring PD as an intervention leading to participant empowerment. It extends its scope by examining how empowerment occurs in existing PD projects through the lens of Theory-Based Evaluation. The proposed framework guides researchers to design, manage, and evaluate PD projects, offering valuable feedback on how the process functions for stakeholders providing project resources. It raises awareness among participants about their role, how they can contribute, and the benefits they can derive from their involvement.

An evaluation theory for participatory design: Design Empowerment Framework (DEF)

This paper presents the Context-based Design Toolkit (CoDeT) methodology – a practical toolkit designed to facilitate collaborative design and evaluation of Socially Assistive Robots (SARs). CoDeT elicits user and other stakeholder needs, perceptions, and preferences. The methodology for creating a CoDeT is three-phased. The first phase is the Contextual space in which the designer generates a use-case-specific toolkit. The second phase is the Investigation space, which refers to utilising the toolkit among different users and stakeholders. The third phase is the Design Space, which returns to the design team to analyse the outcomes and define design guidelines. Rather than an exhaustive research investigation, our work provides guidelines and illustrative examples for using CoDeT effectively. Following the CoDeT methodology enables designers to gain insights regarding stakeholders' and users' perceptions and expectations of robotic roles and their most suitable appearances.
