Scientists reported that biochar can improve soil properties in acidic soils, while in alkaline soils were shown negative results. A field study was done to evaluate the effect of biochar application solely in alkaline soil compared with biochar composts with farm yard manure (BC-FYM) and sulfur (BC-S). The results revealed that using solely biochar decreased yield of potatoes tubers to more than 6 % and 10 % using mineral and organic fertilization, respectively. This was attributed to the alkalinity effect of biochar and raises the soil pH, which might precipitate macro and micro elements in soil and become unavailable for plant absorption. While using mixtures of BC-FYM and BC-S were shown to enhance yield productivity of potatoes tubers 11.7 % and equal to control under mineral fertilization; and 25.13 % and 10.53 % using organic fertilization, respectively. Mixture of BC-FYM and BC-S proved to have the ability for recovering the alkalinity effect of biochar, improve nutrients availability in soil and increase crop yield of potatoes. In general, mixing biochar with FYM was efficient, economical and environmentally sound solution in alkaline soils.

Agricultural energy analysis and better energy use efficiency will contribute to sustainable development adapt to climate change and ensure maintainable production. A case study from Hau Giang province agriculture energy was conducted on the comparison between the cultivation of paddy rice (PR) and upland crops, including corn, mungbean (MB), and black sesame (BS). The life cycle assessment methodology was used to estimate energy consumption and biomass energy production. Based on input-output energy inventoried results, the energy use efficiency, energy productivity, specific energy, and net energy were analysed. Selected crops require 39,501 – 59,638 MJ ha–1 crop–1 that is higher than energy providing for PR. Crop cultivation requires a large amount of energy from fossil fuels and electricity (12,946 – 34,375 MJ ha–1 crop–1). Biomass production achieves 779,670 MJ ha–1 crop–1 through corn cultivation, follow by rice farming (198,723 MJ ha–1 crop–1), BS and BS production (103,292 and 63,012 MJ ha–1 crop–1, respectively). Corn and PR reach the best energy analysis index because of their high biomass production. This study’s results underline the benefit of net energy from agricultural systems case study in Hau Giang province (19,380 – 720,032 MJ ha–1 crop–1).

Approximately 50% of our planet is made up of arid and semi-arid areas. Due to the limited amount of rainfall in drylands, crop productivity and yields must be maximized through the optimization of agricultural field management techniques. However, because it necessitates intensive cultural techniques like irrigation, weeding, fertilizers, and prevent against biotic and abiotic stress is an expensive end favour. This review examined around 113 of the most recent published studies and examined the effects of various mulching materials and procedures on the soil and surrounding environment, which have an impact on crop productivity. Mulch can be a suitable substitute to reduce the amount of irrigation and chemical inputs for weed control. Taking sustainable agriculture measures is critical to effectively coping with the effect of the increasing population on food. Mulching can also regulates soil temperature, moisture content, organic matter content, soil microorganisms, pest and insect control, and plant yield. This review's objective is to conduct a comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of mulches used in vegetable farming. Thus, it has been suggested that mulching techniques be used in vegetable production to reduce cultivation costs and improve soil properties as temperature regulation, moisture, weed suppression, and soil biological activities.

To answer the question, "Is biochar application considered an effective tool for mitigating the negative impacts of water stress on sesame production?" So, two experiments were conducted at the Ismailia Agricultural Research Station in Egypt during summer 2022 and 2023. For each irrigation regime, the experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design using a split-plot arrangement with three replications. The main plots received biochar application rates, while sub-plots planted sesame varieties. The study found that deficit irrigation combined with biochar application significantly improved seed yield and its components in all three sesame varieties. The combination of deficit irrigation with biochar application was found to be a sustainable approach for improving sesame production in sandy soil conditions. Furthermore, biochar application had proven its ability to mitigate the negative effects of deficit irrigation, resulting in higher seed yields.

Combined effects of deficit irrigation and biochar application on seed yield and its components in three different sesame varieties grown in sandy soil conditions

Our work focused on applying different growth media and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) treatments on growth parameters of China Aster as a worldwide ornamental plant. This plant has many uses such as medicinal plant, seasonal and cut flower and green spaces or landscaping. The treatments included four types of growth media (soil (S), soil+perlite (SP), soil+cocopeat (SC) and soil+cocopeat +perlite (SCP)) and three types of incubation status included incubation with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) of Bacillus subtilis (B.subtilis) and Pseudomonas putida (P.putida), and no-bacterial incubation with three replicates. Regardless of growth media, P.putida had greater plant height than B.subtilis. SCP with or without bacterial incubation had the highest plant height and numbers of axillary shoots among the applied growth media. SCP with P.putida had the greatest chlorophyll content (1.29 mg.g-1 FW) and leaf area (1495.05 mm2). SCP with or without bacterial incubation had the highest number and diameters of flowers among other treatments. SCP plus P.putida showed maximum leaf nitrogen (N), SC and SP plus B.subtilis had highest leaf phosphorous (P) and potassium (K), respectively. Our results demonstrated that applying SCP as a compound growth media, with or without bacterial incubation, had best effects on growth and flowering indices.
