Abstract The degree of flesh pigmentation is one of the most important quality criteria dictating the fish market value. It is well known that fish, like other animals, cannot synthesize their own coloring pigments de novo , and must obtain these pigments from their diet. In this study, four levels of black mulberry ( Morus nigra ) juice powder (BMP) as a natural pigment source were incorporated into a basal diet at concentrations of 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75% and fed to rainbow trout weighing 100±5 g for 8 weeks in triplicate. At the end of the feeding trial, the effect of BMP on growth performance, blood biochemical parameters and fillet color was examined. Fish fed BMP showed significant enhancements in weight gain (WG), specific growth (SGR), food conversion ratio (FCR), and survival rates (SR) (P&lt;0.05). SGR, WG and SR values were increased significantly following dietary supplementation with BMP in a dose dependent manner with the highest values in fish fed 0.75%, while the FCR was decreased (P&lt;0.05). Body crude protein, lipid, and moisture contents were increased significantly in fish fed BMP (P&lt;0.05). Dietary BMP has significantly decreased the levels of blood ALT, AST, and glucose (P&gt;0.05). While the blood carotenoid concentration was increased in fish fed 0.5% BMP compared to other treated groups. Fish fed BMP showed increased fillet yellowness ( b* ) and redness ( a* ), while the fillet lightness ( L* ) was decreased when compared to the control (P&lt;0.05). In conclusion, diets supplemented with BMP increased the growth performance, muscle pigmentation, and health status of rainbow trout.

Abstract Aquaculture, as a rapidly expanding global industry, is increasingly challenged by both infectious and non-infectious diseases, posing significant threats to fish health and production. Traditional interventions, such as antibiotics and vaccines, though effective, raise concerns regarding environmental impact and the potential for resistance development. This review explores the promising role of dietary biogenic promoter supplements as an innovative, sustainable alternative for aquaculture. By analysing emerging literature, we highlight the significance of these nature-based solutions, which offer cost-effective, non-toxic, and eco-friendly options to enhance aquaculture productivity. Biogenic supplements, derived from herbs, beneficial microbes, insects, nutrients, bioactive molecules, and nanoparticles, have shown potential in improving feed quality, promoting growth, boosting disease resistance, enhancing immune system function, and supporting overall health in aquatic species. This comprehensive review demonstrates the efficacy of biogenic-mediated supplements in fostering aquaculture sustainability by minimizing the need for traditional chemical interventions. Furthermore, the analysis identifies critical research gaps, particularly in determining optimal supplement concentrations and their species-specific effects. Additionally, large-scale field trials are recommended to validate laboratory findings and assess their practical applications in real-world settings. By synthesizing current research, this review provides valuable insights into the future trajectory of aquaculture practices, positioning biogenic dietary supplements as key contributors to sustainable and efficient aquaculture development.

Biogenic dietary promoters in aquaculture: nature-based solutions for enhancing growth, health, and sustainability

Abstract This study evaluated the effects of ambient temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) during the postpartum transition period on dairy cows’ milk performance, fertility, and immunometabolic blood indices in the subsequent lactation. A total of 100 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows originating from five commercial dairy farms were categorized into three groups based on average T (&lt;16 °C, 16-20 °C and &gt;20 °C) and RH (&lt;65%, 65-75%, and &gt;75%) on the calving day (0d), and days 7, 14, 21 after calving. With increasing T and RH postpartum, the average daily milk yield during the first 150 days in milk decreased gradually, and the differences between T &lt;16 °C and &gt;20 °C and RH &lt;65% and &gt;75% groups were approx. 3.48 and 2.78 kg, respectively. Milk of cows exposed to increased T and RH was lower in protein, and lactose and higher in fat, milk urea, and somatic cell count. It was also characterized by altered fat composition. Ambient T during the postpartum period had a negative effect on cows’ fertility, which, however, was not affected by RH. The increasing T from &lt;16 °C to &gt;20 °C resulted in the later manifestation of the first estrous (by 27.7 days), a more extended artificial insemination service period (by 19.4 days), a higher number of insemination services per conception (by 0.92 on average), more days open (by 43.3 days), and a longer calving interval (by 43.3 days). Within ranges used in this study, increasing T and RH during the period from d 0 to d 14 postpartum led to decreased body condition score on day 21 by approx. 0.48 and 0.51 points, respectively. Furthermore, T and RH on a calving day were associated with altered biochemical blood indices on d 21 after calving, indicating a more severe negative energy balance and a state of inflammation. The results of this study suggest that dairy cows that calve when T &gt;16 °C should be provided cooling to ensure optimal environmental conditions for high milk production and prevent economic losses associated with reduced milk yield and low fertility.

Abstract Nowadays, antimicrobial resistance is a burning issue all over the globe and has been addressed with higher priority. Anthelmintic resistance (AhR) is also becoming a threatening issue since control of helminths mainly depends on deworming using anthelmintics. Therefore, anthelmintics are frequently used around the year. However, the issue regarding AhR has not been focused properly when compared with anti-microbial resistance (AMR). The occurrence of AhR in livestock is very common and increasing rapidly. There are lots of evidences of AhR developed against various anthelmintics. The intensive and indiscriminate use of anthelmintics like benzimidazoles (BMZ), tetrahydropyrimidines (THP) and macrocyclic lactones (MCL) has led to the development of AhR. Therefore, researchers should devise and implement new strategies for helminth control, and control should increasingly incorporate alternative and evidence-based control strategies to limit the development of AhR. This review describes the mechanism of AhR, recent advances in developing resistance, diagnostic tests and worm control strategies.

Saga of anthelmintic resistance: mechanisms of development, methods of detection and ways of mitigation

Abstract Performance of chickens is negatively impacted by stressors such as heat stress, infection with Campylobacter jejuni , the mycotoxins – aflatoxin B1 and deoxynivalenol, the glucocorticoid dexethasone, insecticides and Eimeria tenella. Effects of stressors include reduced gastrointestinal function and induction of inflammation. Stressors influence the following molecular and cellular structures and functions: gastro-intestinal integrity, villus height, crypt depth, mast cell number, expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, concentrations of leukocytes, and antioxidant status. In multiple studies, adverse effects of multiple stressors were overcome partly by supplementation. The utility of these parameters is discussed of these are considered and recommendations/guidelines for future research made.

Molecular and cellular markers in chickens exposed to stressors and the ability of feed supplements to overcome negative effects – a review

Abstract Heat stress (HS) represents a major environmental impact on rabbits’ health, welfare, and production. Grape seed oil (GSO) has improved health and growth. However, the mechanism by which they mitigate the negative effects of HS in growing rabbits is still under debate. This study explored the protective role of dietary grape seed oil nanoemulsion (GON) against blood changes, immune dysfunction, organ histological damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation triggered by HS in growing rabbits. A total of 120 growing rabbits (5 weeks of age and average weight 657.32 g) were divided into 4 groups. The rabbits were administered with different doses of GON: 0 (HS, basal diet), 0.5 (GON0.5), 1 (GON1.0), and 1.5 (GON1.5) mL/kg of diet for 8 weeks under natural heat stress conditions. The results indicated that the GON1.0 and GON1.5 groups exhibited higher body weight values and gains than the other groups (P&lt;0.05), showing a linear relationship with GON dietary levels. A quadratic relationship was observed between FCR and GON, with the optimal dose being 0.7mL/kg of diet. The GON1.5 group had higher red blood cell values than the other groups (p&lt;0.05), while all GON groups significantly reduced leukocyte counts compared to the HS group (p&lt;0.001) in a quadratic manner. GON1.5 and GON1.0 significantly enhanced protein fractions in linear regression analysis. Additionally, ALT, AST, lipid profile, uric acid, LDH, GGT, and total and direct bilirubin were significantly decreased in all rabbits fed with GON (p&lt;0.05) in a quadratic manner. Enriching diets with GON (1 or 1.5 mL) significantly improved antioxidant status (SOD and GPx) and immunity (IgG and IgM) in a quadratic manner. It also resulted in a quadratic decrease in oxidative stress (MDA and PC) and inflammation (IL-6, lysosome activity, and IFN‐γ) levels compared to the HS group (p&lt;0.001). There was a quadratic increase in IL-10 and nitric oxide with increasing the GON, and the optimal dose were 0.86 and 0.9 mL/kg of diet. The GON administration maintained organ architecture (liver, spleen, and intestines) and reduced the immune expression of iNOS in liver tissues induced by HS. Collectively, GON (1 mL/kg diet) is an effective feed additive for improving the health and growth of stressed rabbits by supporting antioxidant and immunity functions while reducing oxidative stress and inflammation pathways induced by HS.
