Development of low-carbon technologies in China's integrated hydrogen supply and power system

In order to understand impacts of global warming on dust aerosol over East Asia, a regional climate model (RegCM3) coupled with a dust model is employed to simulate the present (1991–2000, following the observed concentration of the greenhouse gases) and future (2091–2100, following the A1B scenario) dust aerosol. Three experiments are performed over East Asia at a horizontal resolution of 50 km, driven by the outputs from a global model of the Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC3.2_hires), two without (Exp.1 for the present and Exp.2 for the future) and one with (Exp.3 for the future) the radiative effects of dust aerosols. Effects of climate changes on dust aerosols and the feedback of radiative effects in the future are investigated by comparing differences of Exp.2 and Exp.1, Exp.3 and Exp.2, respectively. Results show that global warming will lead to the increases of dust emissions and column burden by 2% and 14% over East Asia, characterized by the increase in December–January–February–March (DJFM) and the decrease in April–May (AM). Similar variations are also seen in the projected frequencies of high dust emission events, showing an advanced active season of dust in the future. The net top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative forcing is positive over the desert source regions and negative over downwind regions, while the surface radiative forcing is negative over the domain, which will lead to a reduction of dust emissions and column burden.

Effects of climate changes on dust aerosol over East Asia from RegCM3

RegCM3对东亚气候变化对沙尘气溶胶影响的模拟研究

The differences in the characteristics of the rapid intensification (RI) during the TCs that form in the SCS (referred as local TCs) and that enter the SCS from the western North Pacific (WNP; referred as entering TCs) have not been well studied, which could contribute the inaccuracy of current TC intensity forecast in the SCS. In this study, we used TC observations, reanalysis data and model experiments to analyze the RI occurrences during local TCs and entering TCs in 1980–2016. We found that the significant interannual and interdecadal variations in RI occurrences during local eastward-moving TCs were related to the strong intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) over the SCS and the WNP under La Niña conditions. RI during local westward-moving TCs showed insignificant variations as a result of the complex interactions among the monsoon trough, ISO and the large-scale circulation. RI during entering TCs showed strong interdecadal variations, with increased RI after 1997, even though the total number of entering TCs has decreased since 1997, which is a result of a higher number of entering TCs in the northwestern quadrant of the WNP, a stronger ISO and weak vertical windshear over the SCS and east of the Philippines under negative phase of Pacific Decadal Oscillation. The different variations and related mechanisms of RI indicates that distinct forecasting factors should be considered for intensity prediction during local eastward- and westward-moving TCs and entering TCs.

Characteristics of rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones in the South China Sea, 1980–2016

The quantitative assessment of glacier flow velocity dynamics plays a pivotal role in understanding its response mechanisms concerning climate warming. This work provides a systematic quantitative assessment of the deceleration status of glaciers in this region by investigating the motion evolution of typical glaciers in Mount Gongga in recent years, thereby revealing the seasonal dynamics and inter-annual evolution over an extensive time span. We used the optical flow-small baseline subset (OF-SBAS) method to compute the time-series velocities of the Hailuogou Glacier and the Mozigou Glacier using 178 archived Sentinel-1 satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from 2014 to 2021. The findings revealed a prominent seasonal pattern in glacier motion, characterised by cyclic variations in velocity from cold to warm seasons. Moreover, we identified variations in velocities across distinct regions of the glacier surface, underscored by the lag in the peak time node of glacier flow with increasing elevation. This pattern may have been determined by a combination of internal and external factors, including mass accumulation and ablation-driven subglacial drainage, as well as the glacier geomorphological setting. Furthermore, during 2015‒2021, the glaciers on the eastern slope of Mount Gongga exhibited an overarching trend of deceleration. Notably, the ablation area of the Hailuogou Glacier recorded the most substantial deceleration, exceeding 8% per year. This study underscores the efficacy of the OF-SBAS method in extracting long-term glacier velocities. This work also establishes a robust foundation for the analysis of spatiotemporal fluctuations in glacier movement within the context of climate warming.

Dynamics of the spatiotemporal velocity of glaciers on the eastern slope of Mount Gongga, China, under climate change

Alpine vegetation plays an important role in the thermal stability of the permafrost under a warming climate, as it affects ground hydrothermal dynamics. The response of soil hydrothermal dynamics in the active layer to permafrost degradation under different alpine grassland types is unclear on the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau. In this study, long-term soil temperature and soil water content in the active layer were monitored in situ from October 2010 to December 2018 at five sites in the Kaixinling permafrost region on the interior Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau along the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. The sites included an alpine steppe (AS), three alpine meadows (AM) with different degrees of degraded vegetation, and an alpine swamp meadow (ASM). Based on field-monitored data, the variations in soil temperature, soil water content, and freeze–thaw processes were examined in the active layer. The response characteristics of the soil hydrothermal processes to climate change were analysed under the different alpine grasslands. The results showed that the duration of the thawing and freezing stages of the active layer of the AMs was shorter than that of the ASM and the AS. The average mean annual soil temperature (MAST) in the active layer of the AM ((−1.25 ± 0.50) °C) was lower than those in the AS ((−0.71 ± 0.39) °C) and ASM ((−0.45 ± 0.57) °C), while the AM had the highest rate of soil temperature increase ((0.2 ± 0.06) °C per year). The annual amplitude of ground temperature in the active layer increased with the transition direction of the alpine vegetation type from ASM to AM to AS. The small surface offset (SO) and thermal offset (TO) (absolute values) indicated that the ground thermal state of the AM was more unstable, as it was more sensitive to the increase in air temperature than the ASM or the AS. Soil properties controlled the distribution of soil water content within the active layer, but vegetation improved the shallow soil structure by producing more belowground phytomass, thus, enhancing soil water content in the 0–30 cm layer. The average soil water content at depths of 0–30 cm was directly proportional (p < 0.05) to the phytomass. Soil water contents at depths of 0–30 cm in the ASM ((37.7 ± 5.3)%) and the AM ((40.8 ± 5.9)%) were significantly higher than those in the AS ((22.7 ± 3.2)%). These results provide valuable insight into the hydrothermal interactions between the degradation of permafrost and alpine vegetation under a warming climate.
