Endophytes colonize the interior of plant tissues without causing any damage to their hosts. The plant Sapindus saponaria L., popularly known as ‘sabão-de-soldado’, presents a diversified endophytic microbiota and also medicinal properties. Endophytic microorganisms may produce secondary metabolites with different biotechnological properties. The present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial and antifungal capacity of the crude extract of secondary metabolites produced by the endophytic bacteria P. aeruginosa SS93 isolated from S. saponaria leaves. The metabolites extract was obtained using the organic solvent ethyl acetate, and the antimicrobial activities were tested against six pathogenic bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis [ATCC 29212], Pseudomonas aeruginosa [ATCC 27853], Shigella flexneri [ATCC 12022], Salmonella enterica [CCCD a016], Escherichia coli [ATCC 25922], and Staphylococcus aureus [ATCC 25923]), and pathogenic fungi (Fusarium oxysporum, Glomerella sp., Sphaceloma sp., Fusarium solani, Maniliophtora perniciosa, and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum), by agar diffusion method. In the antibacterial assay, the best results were obtained against E. faecalis and S. aureus, where the formation of inhibition halos was observed in all tested concentrations, especially at 500 and 700 µg mL-1. Positive inhibitory activity against phytopathogenic fungi was observed, with the highest inhibition recorded against F. oxysporum (61.1%), followed by Sphaceloma sp. (55.7%), M. perniciosa (35.6%), F. solani (34.4%), and Glomerella sp. (30.4%).

In vitro antimicrobial activity of the crude extract of the endophytic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa (SS93) isolated from Sapindus saponaria L.

Climate change can directly influence invasive species range, and may reflect in greater habitat suitability, consequently increasing losses in native biodiversity. Habitat suitability modelling can help identify priority areas for conservation and rapid response for invasive taxa. This study aimed to model the habitat suitability of Opsanus beta, an invasive fish species, in South America under current and future climate change scenarios. Three modelling techniques, Generalized Linear Model (GLM), Maximum Entropy Algorithm (Maxent), and Random Forest (RF), were applied, and their results were compared and then put together in an Ensemble model to visualize habitat suitability. We found that the current habitat suitability of O. beta in South America is relatively low, with its occurrences mostly related to coastal port areas, suggesting that the species was introduced from ballast water. The increase in mean temperature at mean depth and temperature range were the most relevant variables influencing the species habitat suitability. The gradual increase in habitat suitability for the 2100 climate change scenarios, particularly in more severe climate change scenarios, such as the RCP 8.5, was also observed. The study highlights the critical need to use habitat suitability models to mitigate the impact of future climate change scenarios on invasive species. The findings call for preventive measures to be taken in time to prepare areas that may become the target of dispersal and establishment of O. beta.

The Gulf toadfish goes south: assessing the potential habitat suitability of Opsanus beta in response to climate change

Fungi are eukaryotic, heterotrophic, unicellular or multicellular organisms that feed by absorption. Some of their attributes stand out in the medicinal and pharmaceutical sector since several genera of fungi have metabolic properties and compounds related to the manufacture of numerous medicines. In this context, the objective of this study was to carry out a scientometric analysis to verify the application and properties of medicinal fungi as well as their contributions to the knowledge of medicinal fungi. A survey of applied literature, which included the word “Medicinal fungi”, was carried out based on the articles indexed in the Thomson Reuters base (www.isiwebofknowledge.com), considering the period from 2003 to 2021. One hundred and thirty-nine scientific articles were used for the scientometric analysis, and these were divided into six time intervals (2003-2006, 2007-2009, 2010-2012, 2013-2015, 2016-2018, 2019-2021). An increase was noted in the scientific production on medicinal fungi from 2007 onwards, mostly presenting publications with an experimental approach. The phylum Basidiomycota, followed by Ascomycota, presented the highest number of records in the study, mainly with applications aimed at antitumor and antibacterial activity. Therefore, the importance of studies that aim to expand the knowledge of the properties of medicinal fungi is highlighted, providing effective results for various diseases, since their cultivation and development can positively generate equitable economic growth, with regional and national impacts.

Fungi and their medicinal properties: a scientometric study

The antioxidant enzymes activities during the Messastrum gracile growth period under two different light intensities were evaluated. The light intensities were designated as: control at 60 µmol photons m-2 s-1 and two cultivations under light-induced stress at 120 µmol photons m-2 s-1, during 24 and 72 hours. The maximum cell density in all treatments was achieved on the 21st growth day with 140x105 cells mL-1 (control), 382x105 cells mL-1 (24 hours) and 236x105 cells mL-1 (72 hours). The antioxidant enzymes activities were more elevated in the control, however, GSH-Px, CAT and SOD activities were higher on the 7th growth day, while GPOX and GR activities were higher on the 28th and 21st growth day, respectively. The microalgae displayed lower MDA content, which indicates low stress levels. In terms of growth, biomass production and chlorophyll-a, the best results occurred under light-induced stress (120 µmol photons m-2 s-1). Light-induced stress decreased antioxidant activity during M. gracile growth, and the results revealed a higher activity for glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase.

Antioxidant response of Messastrum gracile (Chlorophyceae) to light-induced stress

Messastrum gracile（绿藻门）对光诱导胁迫的抗氧化响应

Botanical yam (Dioscorea rotundata) seeds are currently used by yam breeders to generate and conserve new varieties of yam instead of seed yams (vegetative propagule). Yam seed treatment through scarification is one of the most effective methods of improving seed germination and seedling establishment. This study was carried out under greenhouse condition to determine the best seed treatment for the germination and establishment of botanical yam seeds. The set up involved a soil mixed with carbonized rice husk using five different seed treatments; dry heating (DHS) at 60 0C, mechanical scarification + gibberellic acid (MSS + GA), mechanical scarification (MSS), acid scarification with sulphuric acid (ASS) and soaking in hot water at 80 0C (SOS). The findings showed that the treatment, MSS + GA and MSS only, had significant (P&lt;0.05) positive effect on the seed emergence and seedling establishment compared to the untreated control (COS) and other treatments. ASS caused seed damage resulting to no emergence. The findings showed that carbonized grain waste (rice husk) enhanced soil fertility and seed treatment (MSS + GA) was the best to improve yam seed germination and seedling establishment. These treatments can be efficiently applied to reduce the long gestation periods and increase yield in yam breeding programmes.

Optimization of treatments for the germination and establishment of botanical yam (Dioscorea rotundata) seeds

The anatomical, physiological, and environmental changes of plants can alter the production of essential oil. The present study aims to characterize the profit and chemical constituents of Lavandula dentata L and Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oils (EO), grown under conditions of stress by solar, water and soil radiation. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used in triplicate. The biomass analysis showed that in both plants, the best results were obtained when it was subjected to lighting, shading and 100% fertilization, but there was the lowest profit of EO. The portion that had the lowest biomass, showed the highest profit of EO. In the EO of Lavandula dentata L there were as major compounds: nerol, linalol and Myrcene, respectively, as the product with the lowest profit, eucalyptol stood out, followed by camphor and fenchone. The EO of Rosmarinus officinalis L with the lowest profit showed alpha-pinene as the major constituent, followed by camphor, 1.8 cineol, alpha-Terpinolene and linalol, and the EO with the highest profit was caryophyllene. The constituents of the EO showed different results when comparing the products obtained from the highest and lowest profit, both qualitatively and quantitatively, which shows that plants under different stress conditions affect the production of these secondary compounds, which may indicate differences in pharmacological actions.

Profit and chemical analysis of Lavandula dentata L. and Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oils and the influence of factors stressors

Myrcia genus plants, like Myrcia pubipetala, traditionally used as hypoglycemic agents, hold promise for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM1) research but need more comprehensive chemical and pharmacological investigation. This is an experimental study involving controlled administration of treatments to a group of rats to assess their effects compared with a control group, investigating the effects of M. pubipetala on alloxan-induced Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in rats. After the induction of diabetes, the rats received the hydroalcoholic extract (HAE) or aqueous fraction (AF) (25, 50, 100, or 150 mg kg-1) of M. pubipetala, or water. The results showed that diabetic rats presented cell damage in kidneys, oxidative stress, and high levels of glucose and triglycerides in their plasma and erythrocytes. The HAE (150 mg kg-1), per se, reduced lipid and protein oxidation, and the AF (150 mg kg-1) decreased lipoperoxidation. AF (150 mg kg-1), per se, decreased triglyceride levels. Conclusion: treatment with HAE and AF reduced oxidative damage, positively modulated antioxidant defenses, and exerted hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects, representing a potential adjuvant treatment for diabetes.

This study delves into the intricate relationship between women and medicinal plants, underscoring their historical and cultural roles mainly in 11 different countries. By specifically examining the impact of social impositions on gender in healthcare and the use of medicinal plants, the research critiques the perspectives that have marginalized both women and nature. To address these issues, ethnobotanical studies should promote research that encompasses the gender. Conducting a systematic review on Women and Medicinal Plants, the research explores key aspects in ethnobotanical studies: botanical knowledge, transmission of knowledge, medicinal plants used in women’s reproductive health, access to healthcare, and the primary knowledge holders. The bibliographic survey, utilizing the Capes database, reveals 205 plant species with 32 medicinal uses for women's health. Rute chalepensis L. (rue) was mentioned four times for abortion, labor contraction, facilitating childbirth, and placental expulsion. In relation to women’s reproductive health, different plants have been used by women and traditional practitioners worldwide. The use of medicinal plants can be associated with social vulnerability in marginalized communities by society which do not have easy access to public health, so they rely on alternative methods such as homemade remedies. Although knowledge about medicinal plants is an intellectual task developed by women, in some societies, such as capitalist societies, gender roles will evolve into specific knowledge, such as the task of family health care. The triple workload is not beneficial to women. Traditional knowledge, when allied with sustainability, can promote gender equality by transmitting intergenerational botanical knowledge without gender distinction and by reclaiming cultivation practices beneficial to the environment, biodiversity, and human health. The study invites ethnobotanical researchers to investigate gender dynamics within their studies. The results of this work can contribute to future research on women and medicinal plants.

Women and medicinal plants: a systematic review in the field of ethnobotany

In recent years, avian medicine has advanced in the recognition of kidney diseases, but little is known about the morphology and renal morphometry of the common ostrich Struthio camelus Linnaeus, 1758. This study aimed to describe the morphometry and location of kidneys in the common ostrich. Twenty-six cadavers, aged one to seven days, which died of natural causes on a farm in the municipality of Magé, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were donated to the Department of Animal and Human Anatomy at the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). The specimens were identified, sexed, and fixed in a 10% aqueous solution of formaldehyde. The kidneys and renal divisions were measured using a precision digital caliper. The kidneys of S. camelus are elongated, and lobular, and have three renal divisions (cranial, middle, and caudal). The average length of the right kidney was 6.69 ± 0.83 cm, and the left kidney was 6.87 ± 0.81 cm. The body length correlated positively and significantly with the lengths of the right kidney (r = 0.8273, p = 0.0017) and left kidney (r = 0.8534, p = 0.0008) in females. The renal cranial limit was observed at the eighth lumbar vertebra (L8) in 22 kidneys (42.3%), and the caudal limit, at the eighth sacrocaudal vertebra (Sc8) in 11 kidneys (21.2%), and the second caudal vertebra (C2) in 11 kidneys (21.2%). The morphometric dimensions and skeletopy of the ostrich kidney contribute to the field of comparative avian anatomy and assist in the interpretation of imaging techniques.

Morphometric study of ostrich kidneys Struthio camelus Linnaeus, 1758

The intestinal microbiota has become known as the ‘second brain’ a complementary organ for most metabolic and defensive reactions. The study aims to investigate the potential of the methanolic extract of Pistacia lentiscus leaves to modulate the dominant flora in type 2 diabetic patients compared to healthy subjects, by controlling growth kinetics. Comparative study between the dominant flora of type two diabitics (DT2) and helthy subjects (HS) stools. Using fully sterilized experimental space and materials, the germs were isolated through an antimicrobial study, and their microbial growth kinetics, were analyzed both with and without phytotherapeutic treatment in vitro. This was carried out as part of a study into the effect of methanolic extract from the leaves of the Pistacia lentiscus L. plant harvested in north-west Algeria. The study found a decrease in the quantity of lactobacilli and streptococci in DT2 and an inverse relationship between enterobacteria and streptococci in all microbiotas. On the molecular side. The methanolic extract of P lentiscus leaves gave a super antimicrobial effect for E coli and Clostridium sp at concentrations below their Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (2 mg mL-1), compared with the other gram positives studied, lactobacillus and Streptococcus (4 mg mL-1). This beneficial action confirms the high antimicrobial effect of the methanolic extract of P lentiscus leaves with lower concentration for the quantitative restauration of intestinal microbiota, the intermediary between insoluno-resistance and metabolism. Pistacia lentiscus has the potential to modulate the dominant flora in type 2 diabetics, through its regulatory antimicrobial power.
