The purpose was to investigate the amount of skeletal and dentoalveolar changes after early treatment of Class II, Division 1 malocclusion with bionator appliance in prepubertal growing patients. Forty Class II patients were divided in two groups. Treated group consisted of 20 subjects treated consecutively with bionator. Mean age at the start of treatment (T0) was 9.1 years, while it was 10.6 years at the end of treatment (T1). Mean treatment time was 17.7 months. Pretreatment and post-treatment cephalometric records of treated group were evaluated and compared with a control group consisted of 20 patients with untreated Class II malocclusion. Intergroup comparisons were performed using Student’s t-tests and chi-square test with Yates’ correction at a significance level of 5 per cent. Bionator appliance was effective in generating differential growth between the jaws. Cephalometric skeletal measurements ANB, WITS, Lafh, Co-A and dental L6-Mp, U1.Pp, IsIi, OB, OJ showed statistically significantly different from the control. Bionator induced more dentoalveolar changes than skeletal during treatment in prepubertal stage.

SKELETAL AND DENTAL CHANGES INDUCED BY BIONATOR IN EARLY TREATMENT OF CLASS II

Lips are the location of more than 27.5% of oral lesions due to their anatomical location and constant exposure to irritating factors. The aim of the present work was to carry out a study of lip neoplasms diagnosed in an oral histopathology laboratory. This is a cross-sectional study based on secondary data of lip neoplasms diagnosed in a histopathology service between January 2000 and December 2021. 109 cases (7.6% of the total) were analyzed. The average evolution time was 26.55 months. Excisional biopsy was more frequent in 52 cases (47.7%). Males were affected in 63 cases (57.8%). The mean age was 47.07 years. Benign neoplasms were more frequent in 71 cases (65.1%), the lower lip was the main site of occurrence, with 61 cases (56%). Papilloma accounted for 33 cases (30.3%), oral squamous cell carcinoma for 32 cases (29.4%) and pleomorphic adenoma for 12 cases (11%). In 81 cases (74.3%), there was agreement between clinical diagnosis and histopathological findings. Benign neoplasms are more frequent than malignant ones, with higher incidence in males and in patients over the 5th decade of life. The most common location was the lower lip and oral squamous cell carcinoma accounted for most malignant neoplasms.

A retrospective 21-year study of tumoral lip lesions

This study aimed to analyze the influence of anatomical location regarding the accuracy of the diagnosis of tonsilloliths on panoramic radiographs.Of 2022 digital panoramic radiographs analyzed, 181 presented tonsilloliths. The images were reevaluated and classified according to six anatomical regions. The findings were related to gender and age. Variables were tested using the Chi-square test. The Receiver Operational Characteristic Curve (ROC) evaluated the performance in identifying the region that presented tonsilloliths. The Kappa test was used for intra and inter-examiner agreement (p &lt; 0.05). Of the 181 patients (8.95%) with tonsilloliths, 104 (57.46%) were male (p &lt; 0.05). The most prevalent age group was ≥49 years (p &lt; 0.05). Unilateral/bilateral ratio was 2.5:1. The Kappa values for intra and inter-examiner showed substantial to almost perfect scores. The most common location of the tonsilloliths was the mandible ramus, superimposed on the soft palate (p &lt; 0.05), presenting the largest area under the curve (AUC) and the greatest accuracy (AUC= 0.70; 0.66) as well. Likewise, this location and the location postero-inferior to the mandible angle showed greater sensitivity and specificity. In the panoramic radiographs image, tonsilloliths are most often superimposed on the mandible ramus, with greater accuracy and sensitivity for its detection.

The influence of anatomical location on the accuracy of tonsillolith diagnosis on panoramic radiographs

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) significantly decreases the functional capacity of 1% of the world's population, and it is believed that oxidative stress may be one of its triggering factors. Thus, the present study evaluated the biomarkers of oxidative stress in patients with rheumatoid arthritis before pharmacological treatment and their relationship with the DAS 28 score. This is an observational, cross-sectional study with a quantitative and analytical approach. Patients treated at a rheumatology clinic in the city of Ijuí/RS, with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, were selected and compared with the control group. Data collection took place between August and September 2020. In the 18 patients who participated in the research, higher values of SOD (p = 0.045), NP-SH (p ≤ 0.000) and TBARS (p = 0.005), and reduced levels of CAT (p ≤ 0.000) were found, when compared to the control. The enzymatic levels of the patients showed a significant association with body mass index. Furthermore, in this study, the pain complaint did not correlate with oxidative stress markers. This study showed changes in oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with RA before pharmacological treatment, demonstrating that these are indicative of a worse prognosis, which is estimated to be minimized with adequate pharmacological treatment.

Assessment of oxidative stress biomarkers in patients before pharmacological treatment for rheumatoid arthritis

To analyze the pain, the muscle profile of some muscles actively and passively involved in the stomatognathic system, and stress traits. A clinical, randomized and double-blind study (n = 35) was performed analyzed by the Research Diagnostic Criteria/Temporomandibular Dysfunction (RDC/TMD), with subjects allocated in experimental group (EG) which received acupuncture at the meridian points according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, and another placebo group (PG) which received acupuncture at random points. The degree of discomfort was evaluated by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), tissue sensitivity, somatic and psychic anxiety level, salivary cortisol levels, electrical activity of the masseter, anterior temporal, sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and trapezoid muscles before and after the proposed treatment. The Wilcoxon test, Chi-squared test, Signal test, Mann-Whitney U-test, paired and independent Student’s t-test, Pearson’s correlation test and the symmetry index of the muscles were used for statistical analysis, considering a significance level equal to 0.05. There was a reduction of physical non-specific TMD symptoms, and the degree of discomfort decreased by fifty percent in the EG, with a trend curve pointing to an evolution in the repair process. Tissue sensitivity decreased in the EG and increased in the PG. The treated group presented a reduction of physical and psychological manifestations in the anxiety situation, while the reduction was only for physical manifestations in the PG. Salivary cortisol levels did not change. The masticatory musculature presented an increase in the temporal activity and a decrease in the masseter/temporal ratio in the PG. The EG showed a better relationship between the trapezium and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Therefore, acupuncture treatment was efficient for reducing the pain symptoms and the physical and mental conditions of anxiety in people with TMD, as well as to improve the relationship of postural muscles.

Does acupuncture treatment reduce temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms?

针灸治疗能减轻颞下颌功能障碍症状吗？

Consumers' interest towards glycaemic index (GI) is expanding due to their aspiration towards informed buying and increased awareness regarding diet. This is especially the case for people engaged in various physical activities. Their diet, besides general principles of a healthy balanced diet, should also meet the needs of training. Consumption of carbohydrates with different GI before, during and after training affects athletic performance, with high GI food being preferred. The aim was to compare the effect of honey and two different sports energy products on glycaemia and their potential in terms of sports performance. GI of acacia honey and two sports energy products (gel and jelly) was determined according to the method ISO 26642: 2010. Ten healthy males aged 23.2 years (20 to 27 years old) who are minimum 4 hours per week engaged in at least one sport were enrolled. Glycaemia was the least affected by honey (GI = 89.6 ± 37.1), while jelly increased glycaemia the most (GI = 162.1 ± 60.9), and the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.008). Honey also showed good acceptability, and did not differ in subjective satiety score to gel or jelly. The results show that honey can be a good alternative to various sports energy products, and a more affordable one.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between excess peripheral, central and general adiposity and different contexts of physical activity (Physical Education classes, school recess, commuting, leisure time and participation in sports teams) in adolescents from Southern Brazil. Across-sectional study was developed with 1.132 adolescents (16.50 ± 1.14 years) of both sexes. Peripheral adiposity (triceps skinfold) and central adiposity (subscapular skinfold) were classified as high based on the 90th percentile of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reference distribution. For excess general adiposity, triceps and subscapular skinfold thicknesses above the 90th percentile were simultaneously considered. The different contexts of physical activity were obtained through self-reported questionnaire. Covariates were: age, economic level, eating habits measured through self-administered questionnaire and sexual maturation (self-reported, following Tanner's procedures). Binary logistic regression was used with significance level &lt; 0.05. Male adolescents little active during leisure time were 2.25 (95%CI: 1.17; 4.50) times more likely of having excess peripheral adiposity, 3.10 (95%CI: 1.56; 6.13) times more likely of having excess central adiposity and 2.38 (95% CI: 1.08; 5.26) times more likely of having general adiposity when compared to peers active during leisure time. For female adolescents, no context of physical activity was associated with excess peripheral, central and general adiposity. Male adolescents little active during leisure time are more likely of having excess peripheral, central and general adiposity. For female adolescents, no context of physical activity was associated with excess peripheral, central and general adiposity.

Association between excess peripheral, central and general adiposity and different contexts of physical activity among adolescents from Southern Brazil

This study aimed to show alterations in body mass index (BMI) and food preferences and their associations with eating behaviors in the early pandemic. Four hundred and forty-three adults participated in this study. Data were collected using a web-based survey within a month after social distancing onset. Self-reported body weight and height were used to obtain the BMI trend. Alterations in eating habits (snacking, eating out, and main meal number) were collected. The mindful eating questionnaire, Mediterranean diet assessment tool, emotional eating scale, and depression inventory were applied. Multiple linear regression models were set to predict factors on BMI. Food preferences were shown according to mindful eating groups. BMI, snacking, and sleep duration increased in both sexes during social distancing. Nearly half of the participants reported weight gain, while one-fifth lost weight. Being overweight (from 36.0 to 38.7% for men, from 17.7 to 18.8% for women, and obese (from 10.7 to 12.7% for men and from 4.4 to 5.8% for women) increased. Eating out and regular sports activities decreased. The mindful eating scores, negative emotional eating, and positive emotional eating were the predictors of BMI after adjustment for age, sex, and regular sports activity. The only significant factor was mindful eating for the altered BMI. Consumption of bread, grains, seeds, sweet, salty, and fatty snacks, canned foods, pastry, milk puddings, bakery goods, jam and honey, sugar-sweetened fruit juices, and carbonated beverages increased in the low- more than the high-mindful eating group. In conclusion, BMI altered even in the early pandemic. Mindful eating was the only significant factor in the BMI increase. High carbohydrate and fat-contained food groups were more frequently preferred among the low-mindful eating group. Therefore, setting mindfulness practices might prevent eating disorder risks and promote public health.

This study evaluated the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in dental students and its association with psychosocial factors (general health, quality of life and anxiety). Sixty students were initially selected and analyzed for TMD presence by the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD). The participants answered self-administered questionnaires to assess general health (General Health Questionnaire – GHQ), quality of life (World Health Organization Quality of Life – WHOQOL-brief), and anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory – STAI). The prevalence of TMD among the participants was 43.33% (n = 26), 26% (n = 16) were diagnosed with painful disorders, being myalgia the most prevalent diagnosis (21.67%; n = 13). About 16.67% (n = 10) of the participants presented disc displacement with reduction. All indicators of general health showed statistically significant difference such as psychological stress (p = 0.004), death wish (p = 0.006), distrust in performance (p &lt; 0.001), sleep disturbance (p = 0.025), psychosomatic disorder (p &lt; 0.001), and general health (p = 0.003). Quality of life was associated with the presence of painful disorder in the physical (p = 0.001), psychological (p = 0.003) and general (p = 0.015) dimensions. The state of anxiety (STAI-S) showed statistically significant difference (p = 0.042). In conclusion, painful muscle disorder was the most prevalent TMD subtype in dental students and several psychosocial factors are important indicators of TMD presence.

Quality of life, general health and anxiety in dental students with temporomandibular disorders

Primary Health Care (PHC) is considered a privileged space for the inclusion of students in the Unified Health System (UHS), which is most desirable the pedagogical scenario for the health course graduate education profile. However, its new financing model induces a neoselectivity that may mischaracterize UHS principles in primary care. This study is a qualitative meta-synthesis to understand the challenges of teaching practice scenarios in PHC, identified in the research, in order to discuss them in light of the limits imposed by the neoselectivity, induced by the Previne Brasil Program (Prevent Brazil Program). A search was conducted on the Virtual Health Library (VHL) portal. The search strategy was designed using the following keywords: ‘practice scenarios in higher education’ (object), ‘challenges’ (qualifier) and ‘PHC’ (amplitude/limit). The selection of publications was carried out using the PRISMA protocol by two independent reviewers, and data analysis was performed in the thematic modality. The quality analysis of the articles was based on the CASP protocol and the internal validation of the excerpts was done by a third evaluator. From the 17 articles included in the review, it was possible to extract 5 analytical dimensions of the scenarios' challenges, which are related to: ‘care’, ‘teaching’, ‘management’, ‘health professionals' attitude’, ‘community attitude’. All dimensions presented several sub-themes, except for 'community attitude'. Given the existing challenges, the neoselectivity induced in PHC tends to intensify most of the problems. It is assumed that the impacts on PHC settings may, in the future, place it as a non-viable practice scenario.
