Abstract. Concepts of High-Temperature Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (HT-ATES) (&gt; 50 °C) are investigated in this study for system application in the Upper Jurassic reservoir (Malm aquifer) of the German Molasse Basin (North Alpine Foreland Basin). The karstified and fractured carbonate rocks exhibit favourable conditions for conventional geothermal exploitation of the hydrothermal resource. Here, we perform a physics-based numerical analysis to further assess the sustainability of HT-ATES development in the Upper Jurassic reservoir. With an estimated heating capacity of approx. 19.5 MW over half a year, our approach aims at determining numerically the efficiency of heat storage under the in situ Upper Jurassic reservoir conditions and projected operation parameters. In addition, the hydraulic performance of the HT-ATES system is further evaluated in terms of productivity and injectivity index. The numerical models build upon datasets from three operating geothermal sites at depths of approx. 2000–3000 m TVD, located in a subset of the reservoir dominated by karst-controlled fluid fluxes. Commonly considered as a single homogeneous unit, the 500 m thick reservoir is subdivided into three discrete layers based on field tests and borehole logs from the three considered sites. The introduced vertical heterogeneity with associated layer-specific enhanced permeabilities allows to examine potentially arising favourable heat transfer, and in combination with the facilitated high operation flow rates (100 kg s−1) to evaluate thermal recoveries in the multilayered reservoir. All simulations account for fluid density and viscosity variation based on thermodynamically consistent equations of state (EOS). Computation results reveal that the reservoir layering induces preferential fluid and heat migration primarily into the high-permeability zone, while thermal front propagation into the lower permeable rock matrix is inhibited. The simulations further display a gradual temperature increase in the warm wellbore and its surrounding host rock, and a consequent progressive improvement in the heat recovery efficiency. Despite the elevated permeability that may trigger advective heat losses, heat recovery factor values range from approx. 0.7 over the first year of operation to over 0.85 after 10 years of operation. An additional scenario is examined with fluid injection solely in the high permeable zone, in order to quantify potential enhancement in the recovery efficiency by omitting fluid injection in the lower-permeability layers where heat propagation is diminished. This is due to the geometrical shape of the thermally perturbed rock volume as heat losses occur during thermal equilibration between injected fluid and reservoir rock, as well as at the contact-surface area between propagating thermal front and adjacent rock matrix. Results suggest that under the stratified reservoir configuration, additionally constrained by the selected spatial distribution of rock properties, heat storage performed only into the upper high-permeability zone corresponds to an improved thermal performance. Simulation results further indicate that density-induced buoyant fluxes, which would considerably decrease thermal efficiencies are inhibited in the system, and the prevailing heat transport mechanism is forced convection.

Physics-based numerical evaluation of High-Temperature Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (HT-ATES) in the Upper Jurassic reservoir of the German Molasse Basin

Abstract. Between late January and early March of 1990 Europe was hit by a sequence of severe winter storms that caused significant infrastructure damage and a large number fatalities. The storm sequence started with Hurricane Daria on 25–26 January 1990, which was one of the most serious events of the storm cluster, especially for the UK. The low pressure centre moved in a west-northwest direction across Ireland, southern Scotland, and north of Denmark before moving further into the Baltic. The strongest winds south of the trajectory path caused significant damage and disruptions in England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and West Germany. Media reports highlighted building damage, interrupted transportation networks, power outages, and fatalities. There were also a series of maritime emergencies in the Bay of Biscay, English Channel, North Sea, and Baltic Sea. This contribution takes a closer look at Storm Daria, presenting an overview of meteorological measurements and the societal impacts, followed by an analysis of the North Sea tide gauge network to understand the storm surge and possible large wave occurrences. Offshore wind energy was at the planning stage in this early period, but onshore wind energy was established in Denmark with demonstration projects in other countries. The storm is an important case study of extreme meteorological conditions that can impact energy infrastructure.

Storm Daria: Societal and energy impacts in northwest Europe on 25–26 January 1990

Abstract. In many regions considered for deep geological repositories (DGR) for nuclear waste, repeated glaciations could occur within the time frame relevant to their long-term post-closure safety (up to 1 million years; Myr). Ice sheets can affect the long-term safety of a DGR by elevating the hydrostatic pressure at DGR depth, altering groundwater flow and chemistry, influencing the frequency and severity of earthquakes, and causing surface bedrock erosion. Therefore, DGR safety assessments must account for uncertainties in future ice-sheet variability, including the timing, frequency and duration of ice sheets at the DGR site. Using coupled ice sheet-climate models to constrain uncertainties in ice-sheet variability over the next 1 Myr is not feasible due to the long timescales involved and substantial computational requirements. Instead, we propose a simplified methodology to assess future ice-sheet variability at potential DGR sites using reconstructions of past ice sheets and global simulations of future climate change. The simulations are conducted using a conceptual climate model driven by changes in insolation and atmospheric CO2 concentrations resulting from anthropogenic emissions. The model is calibrated with 500 000 years (500 kyr) of climate proxy data inferred from deep-ocean sediments. Applying this methodology to the planned Swedish DGR site intended for disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark suggests that the onset of the next glaciation at the site will not occur until 100 kyr after present, even in the absence of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. However, anthropogenic emissions have the potential to delay the next glaciation in Forsmark by several hundred thousand additional years. Following the initial glaciation, our results suggest that the frequency and duration of subsequent glaciations in Forsmark resemble those observed over the last 800 kyr. Considering uncertainties in anthropogenic emissions and future climate evolution, a wide range of possible future glacial developments is identified. At the extremes of this uncertainty range – developments with a low likelihood of occurrence but relevant for evaluating the robustness of the DGR – we find that Forsmark could experience ice-sheet coverage for nearly half of the next 1 Myr or remain almost entirely ice-free throughout this period. The proposed methodology is easy to implement and applicable to any potential DGR site with a recorded history of glaciations.

Assessing future ice-sheet variability for long-term safety of deep geological repositories

Abstract. Enhancing aquifer recharge could support climate adaptation in the Besòs basin and in the rest of Catalonia (Spain). This study examines how water quality in aquifers and streams varies along the catchment, and changes in surface water quality during wet and dry periods. Data from 2013 to 2023 from 20 river stations and 26 wells were used to map salinity (EC, Na+, Cl−, SO42-) and nutrient parameters (PO43-, NH4+, NO3-, TOC). Results indicate declining water quality downstream, necessitating salinity control during dry periods and ongoing nutrient management even in wet periods to preserve groundwater quality. These findings will inform the development of numerical models to test MAR methods and recharge strategies in the basin.

Abstract. A quarter of a century ago, a long-term expert in the nuclear waste scene stated that “the management of spent nuclear fuel and high-level nuclear waste has the deserved reputation as one of the most intractable policy issues facing the United States and other nations using nuclear reactors for electric power generation” (North, 1999, p. 751). Apart of exceptions, this statement is still true. At some points, however, there is light at the end of the tunnel if we can read the signs of the times. It will be a long hike, in steep terrain, poor visibility and with an approximate destination. We need a safe and acceptable site, tolerated by the affected parties, where a repository can be built, operated and, finally, closed down in reasonable course by a generation to come and with a clear conscience. This contribution does not present the silver bullet (which does not exist) but suggests some criteria and characteristics which have not been respected in the history of final disposal – but they should be. It needs adequate resources: stable structures, competent institutions, learning personnel (in institutions and civil society), mature and open discourse as well as sufficient time.
