Africa Journal of Nursing and Midwifery is a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal that seeks the submission of unpublished articles on current nursing and health-related issues. It encourages debate, both theoretical and practical, on a wide range of topics that represent a variety of cross-disciplinary interests. Africa Journal of Nursing and Midwifery is interested in attracting submissions that exhibit innovative qualitative and quantitative research methods and approaches. Background: Nurses often use the clinical decision-making mechanism. This mechanism is influenced by critical thinking and rational and intuitive decision-making styles. This study’s aim was to determine the levels of rational and intuitive decision-making styles and critical thinking disposition of nurses. Method: It is a prospective and cross-sectional descriptive study. Data were collected between May and August 2023. The study included 355 nurses working at two major hospitals in one of the largest cities in the Central Anatolia region. The data were gathered using a questionnaire consisting of a personal information form, Critical Thinking Disposition Scale and Rational and Intuitive Decision-making Styles Scale.Results: The Critical Thinking Disposition Scale and Rational Decision-making Styles Scale scores of the nurses were above the average and the Intuitive Decision-making Styles Scores were close to the average. A positive and significant correlation has been found between nurses’ critical thinking dispositions and levels of rational and intuitive decision making. In addition, the linear regression analysis shows nurses’ critical thinking tendencies affect their rational decision-making and intuitive decision-making styles.Conclusion: These findings suggest strengthening nurses’ critical thinking could improve both their rational and intuitive decision-making skills, thereby improving patient care outcomes by making effective clinical judgements.

Rational and Intuitive Decision-making Styles, Critical Thinking Dispositions and Associated Factors of Nurses

Aim: The study explored nurse educators’ perceptions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) nursing students in a nursing education institution in Gauteng, South Africa. Background: More young students with “fluid” views on sexuality and gender are joining nursing colleges, largely influenced by digital communication. This has made LGBTI students more visible, and nurse educators need to understand their views. Methods: An interpretive phenomenological inquiry employing focus group interviews (FGI) with eight nurse educators and three student counsellors who were purposively selected was conducted between February and August 2021. A Heideggerian hermeneutic approach formed the basis for data analysis. Findings: Five themes emerged about LGBTI-oriented nursing students: (1) being in strained relationships; (2) nurse educators are not involved in students’ sexual orientation; (3) religious and cultural views about LGBTI orientation; (4) a process of discovering identity—identity crisis; (5) inheritance, family background, and relationships with family and community. Conclusion: The findings suggest that acceptance of an LGBTI identity is still a challenge to nurse educators, particularly those with strong religious and cultural beliefs and convictions; however, they were aware of professional standards, human rights, and their support role towards the students. In general, the findings indicate a need for increasing awareness of the LGBTI community and consideration of policies that promote social inclusion and respect for human rights, dignity, and difference.

Nurse Educators’ Perspectives on LGBTI Nursing Students in a Nursing Education Institution in Gauteng, South Africa

Indigenous practices are performances that occur naturally in a region. Most women believe in Indigenous practices because of their cultures and social structure. In South Africa, regardless of the availability and accessibility of maternal and child health services, 50% of women still consult traditional birth attendants as their first choice during pregnancy, labour, delivery and postnatal care. A qualitative research approach was applied with an explorative and descriptive design to explore the Indigenous practices of women during pregnancy, labour and puerperium among cultural groupings. Non-probability purposive sampling was used to select 25 participants and data was collected through semi-structured interviews with a guide until data saturation was reached. Data was analysed using tech’s open coding method. The study showed most women use Indigenous practices for protection against witchcraft and a fear of caesarean section. This study will help pregnant women to be aware of the harmful Indigenous practices that can affect their own health and that of their baby. It will also help nurses provide holistic nursing care, taking into consideration pregnant women’s cultures and beliefs. The study recommends that nursing education include Indigenous practices in the curriculum so that healthcare practitioners know about them. This could reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality.

Indigenous Practices of Women during Pregnancy, Labour and Puerperium among Cultural Groupings at Selected Hospitals in Limpopo Province, South Africa

Hands-on experiential learning within a clinical setting and the integration and translation of theoretical knowledge to practice have been explored as pedagogical methods to enhance nursing education. This study reports nursing students’ self-assessment of volunteer learning experience at hospitals and community pharmacies to enhance nursing pharmacologic knowledge. The study quantitatively evaluated the self-reported assessment of nursing students at hospital and community pharmacies in Belize using a convenient sampling technique. Forty-six nursing students spent 48 hours at assigned community and hospital pharmacies under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Self-assessment questionnaires and the grades from preceptors were analysed and reported. Students described a positive experience with high mean scores indicating self-reported learning of new medications, drug side effects, labelling of drugs, dispensing prescriptions, patients’ assessment, communication and experience working alongside interprofessional healthcare team members. This study shows that undergraduate nursing students can benefit from volunteer learning at community and hospital-based pharmacies to enhance hands-on learning of pharmacotherapeutics knowledge. Daily interactions with pharmacists, medications and patients complemented students’ learning of medications and skills acquisition. Nursing educators should explore nonconventional pedagogical approaches, such as pharmacy clinical sites, to complement students’ pharmacologic learning.

Students’ Engagement in Learning Nursing Pharmacotherapeutics: A Self-reported Volunteer Experience

Monitoring foetal growth and managing pregnancy complications require the precise determination of gestational age. Estimation of gestational age during pregnancy is of utmost importance as it assists with the identification of high-risk pregnancies like polyhydramnios, multiple pregnancy and intrauterine growth restriction. The purpose of the SR was to map the evidence of estimation of gestational age during pregnancy in Africa using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Scoping Review Methodology. Electronic search engines were used to search articles published from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2023. A total of 79 eligible articles were retrieved and uploaded to Rayyan – a web and mobile app for systematic reviews. The selection process included title and abstract screening as well as full text article screening, which resulted in 19 articles. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) flow chart was developed to report the 19 studies identified for final SR. There was a minimal publication of studies between 2013 and 2014 with a marked increase in 2019 (n = 4) and 2020 (n = 4). Countries where studies were done included Northern Africa (n = 3), Eastern Africa (n = 3), Western Africa (n = 3), Central Africa (n = 2), Southern Africa (n = 3), and multiple countries (n = 5). Among the 19 articles included in the SR, 16 adopted a quantitative design. This scoping review (SR) identified several methods for gestational age estimation, namely, ultrasound; last menstrual period (LMP); symphysis fundal height (SFH); and clinical data. More systematic reviews should be conducted on the estimation of gestational age to add to the information obtained from the SR.
