The piggery industry in Nigeria is on the verge of collapsing due to the high cost of conventional feed resources including wheat offal and palm kernel cake that usually form bulk in the diets of pigs. This study was, therefore, designed to compare the chemical composition of orange pulp meal, pineapple peel meal, and wheat offal and evaluate their feeding value in pig rations. The orange pulp and pineapple peels were dried on a concrete floor and analyzed for chemical composition. Three experimental diets were formulated with orange pulp and pineapple peel meals replacing wheat offal as a fibre source. Thirty crossbred (Chester white x Landrace) growing pigs with an average initial weight of 8.20 -- 8.75kg were distributed into three groups, with ten animals per group, and assigned to the three experimental diets. The average daily feed intake and weight gain were monitored throughout the 56-day duration of the experiment. Seven days to the end of the experiment, three pigs randomly selected for the digestibility trial were individually housed in metabolism crates and allowed 5 days of adaptation to the crates and feed before faecal collection commenced. Animals were fed the experimental diets at approximately 4% of their body weight, and the faeces of the animals were collected for 5 days. The determination of the nutrient composition of feed and faecal samples was performed. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance using a completely randomized design. The result indicated that samples were significantly (P&lt;0.05) different in crude protein composition, with the wheat offal having the highest value corresponding to 9.21 ± 0.12%. Orange pulp had the highest content of ash (6.72 ± 0.12%). The gross energy values were 15.23MJ/kg, 15.31MJ/kg and 16.15MJ/kg for pineapple peel, orange pulp and wheat offal, respectively. The highest manganese concentration was observed in wheat offal (5.19± 0.11mg/l), while orange pulp and wheat offal were higher in sodium and phosphorus concentrations. The pigs fed an orange pulp meal diet recorded the highest average daily weight gain (0.31 kg) and a superior feed conversion ratio (4.19) relative to others. Digestibility values were similar across the three treatment groups. It was, therefore, concluded that orange pulp and pineapple peal meal could serve as alternative fibre sources in growing pigs' rations. Evaluation of the Chemical Composition and Feeding Value of Sweet Orange Pulp and Pineapple Peel Meals as Fibre Sources in Pigs’ Rations

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a significant public health issue in Indonesia. While previous studies have found the effectiveness of breadfruit leaf capsules in improving metabolic status among prediabetics, limited studies exist on their effectiveness in people with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of breadfruit leaves extract in improving components of MetS in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. The study was conducted as a double blind Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). A total of 46 participants were recruited through public announcements. The intervention group received breadfruit leaf capsules, while the control group received placebo. Measurements of blood glucose, high density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, blood pressure, consumption patterns, and anthropometry were conducted both before the intervention (pre-treatment) and after the 21-day intervention period (post-treatment). Data analysis was performed using SPSS software, employing independent t-tests and paired t-tests. Statistical significance was defined as a p-value &lt;0.05. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the control group and breadfruit leaf extract group were both significantly different in pre-treatment and post-treatment (p&lt;0.05). But the decrease in the breadfruit leaf extract group was greater than in the control group, both in systolic blood pressure (15.43±2.57 mmHg vs 7.13±2.77 mmHg) and in diastolic blood pressure (5.00±2.27 mmHg vs 4.7±2.88 mmHg). Blood glucose levels in the control group and breadfruit leaf extract group were both significantly different in pre-treatment and post-treatment (p&lt;0.05). But the decrease in the breadfruit leaf extract group was greater than in the control group (76.44±49.86 mg/dL vs 23.83±8.37 mg/dL). HDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the control group and breadfruit leaf extract group were both significantly different in pre-treatment and post-treatment (p&lt;0.05). But the changes in the breadfruit leaf extract group were greater than in the control group (21.09±15.43 mg/dL vs 6.31±6.0 mg/dL), and triglyceride levels decreased more in the breadfruit leaf extract group than in the control group (57.74±35.72 mg/dL vs 22.6±11 mg/dL). Changes in metabolic syndrome components in DM sufferers were significant in both the breadfruit leaf extract group and the control group, but the changes in the intervention group were better when compared to the control group. Further research needs to be carried out with larger samples and a longer duration of intervention to confirm these results. The Fetša Tlala Initiative is one of the development projects which were designed to contribute towards the achievement of the South African National Development Plan, 2030. The objective of the research was to analyse the effectiveness of the Fetša Tlala Initiative on the food and nutrition security of women smallholder farmers residing in Semaneng village, Limpopo Province, South Africa. The reason for focusing on women smallholder farmers was that whilst there has been research undertaken on the effectiveness of the Fetša Tlala Initiative, there has not been a study that focuses exclusively on women’s perspectives about the Initiative. The study, thus, sought to break exploratory ground about the effectiveness of the Fetša Tlala Initiative from the viewpoint of women smallholder farmers. The study, thus, adopted a qualitative research design in the form of an exploratory case study. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide from 16 participants who were purposefully selected. Face-to-face interviews were conducted and then reflected upon using an inductive thematic analysis. Results of the research indicated that the food security initiative had mixed results. On the positive side, and consistent with one objective of the broader Fetša Tlala Initiative, agricultural inputs increased amongst the women smallholder farmers, which assisted them to boost their yields and improve household food security. The Initiative also empowered the women smallholder farmers by strengthening their collective resilience in the face of adversities they encountered during the project. Notwithstanding these successes, the research findings also indicate that the effectiveness of the Initiative was reduced because of the inconsistent institutional support provided by the appointed Fetša Tlala Initiative project managers. The inconsistent institutional support represented a top-down planning and management strategy premised upon a centralised decision-making model. As a consequence of this style of planning and management, the beneficiaries could only respond by building localised resilience to the challenges. Such agency from the beneficiaries suggests that future Fetša Tlala projects might benefit from a decentralised decision-making planning and management strategy, that is inclusive of the project beneficiaries from the outset. The paper recommends continuation of the Fetša Tlala Initiative with emphasis on transforming the institutional support so that future beneficiaries are included in decision making processes from the inception phases through to completion of projects. An Analysis of the Effectiveness of the Fetša Tlala Initiative on the Food and Nutrition Security of Women Smallholder Farmers in Limpopo Province, South Africa

Legumes are integrated in maize-based systems to improve soil fertility and crop productivity. However, the ecosystem services from legumes vary. Crop rotation on-farm studies were conducted over two cropping seasons (2018/19 and 2019/20) in Mkanakhoti and Kaluluma Extension Planning Areas (EPAs) in Kasungu district, central Malawi. The main objective of this study was to evaluate maize response to legume cropping systems and mbeya manure. In the first season (2018/19), five treatments including sole groundnut (Gn), sole soybean (soy), sole pigeon pea (PP), and doubled-up legumes (legume + legume intercrop) - pigeon pea intercropped with groundnut (Gn+PP), and pigeon pea intercropped with soybean (Soy+PP) were grown. In the second season (2019/20), maize was planted on plots that had either sole or doubled-up legumes. These plots were split into two, one half was top dressed with 23kg N ha-1 only and the other half received 23kg N ha-1+1000kg ha-1 mbeya manure. The experiments were replicated in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons. Soil fertility was low and highly variable between farms in the study sites. Soil pH, total nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P), organic matter (SOM) and active carbon in topsoil (0-15cm) averaged 5.1±0.5, 0.19±0.18%, 31±19.6 ppm, 1.4±0.34 %, and 193±74 mg kg-1, respectively. Application of mbeya manure to maize increased leaf chlorophyll and plant height (p&lt;0.05). There were variations in maize yield responses to legumes with higher benefits obtained from maize rotated with doubled-up legumes than sole legumes. The results also showed that on non-responsive soils, overall, the use of mbeya manure in combination with legume systems increased the rotational maize grain yield by 88% over maize following legumes only (p&lt;0.05), with highest yields from doubled up legumes/maize rotations followed by groundnut/maize rotations. It is therefore recommended that on highly degraded soils, farmers can increase maize productivity through integrated soil fertility management involving a combination of 23kg N/ha and 1000kg/ha of mbeya manure applied to maize rotated with doubled-up legumes (Gn+PP or Soy+PP) and sole groundnut (Gn). Integration of Grain Legumes and Mbeya Manure Improves Maize Productivity on Smallholder Farms in Central Malawi

Micronutrient deficiencies are a public health concern affecting more than two billion people worldwide. When adequately consumed, vegetables avert the risk of micronutrient deficiencies. However, low intake of vegetables is common during the dry season due to scarcity and increased prices. This study, a follow-up to the EATSANE project in Teso South sub-county, aimed to assess factors influencing the consumption patterns of sun-dried vegetables among households in Teso South sub-county. The EaTSANE project used the Trials for Improved Practices (TIPs) approach to promote sun drying and consumption of sun-dried vegetables in the study area. This cross-sectional study involved collecting quantitative and qualitative data through interviews and focus group discussions. It targeted women from the TIPs (50) and non-TIPs households (50) of the EaTSANE project. The questionnaire respondent rate was 99% as only 49 women from the TIPs households could be found. The mean ages were 36.82±11.56 and 34.94±10.94 years for the TIPs and non-TIPs participants, respectively. Most TIPs (61.2%) and non-TIPs (56%) participants did not attain primary education and practiced crop farming. Consumption of sun-dried vegetables was reported by the TIPs participants (38.3%) only. The most preferred sun-dried vegetables were cowpea leaves, amaranth, nightshade, pumpkin leaves, jute mallow, and sun hemp, mostly consumed monthly (7.2%). Awareness of the sun-drying technology created by the EaTSANE’s TIPs activities influenced the consumption of sun-dried vegetables [X2 (4) = 35.233, p = .009]. There was no significant relationship between the consumption of sun-dried vegetables and the duration of sun-drying (p &gt; 0.05). However, a chi-square test of independence showed that there was a significant relationship between consumption of sun-dried vegetables and confidence in preparing a meal using sun-dried vegetables X2 (4, N=99) = 26.964, p = .000). A binary logistic regression analysis further showed that both the ease of preparing sun-dried vegetables (p = 0.006) and the confidence in preparing a meal comprising sun-dried vegetables (p =0.001) were significant (X2 (2) = 34.9, p &lt; 0.001). Sensory attributes including the color (X2 (4, N=99) = 19.3, p = .001) and taste (X2 (4, N=99) = 25.4, p = .000) of sun-dried vegetables were also significant in influencing their consumption. For improved consumption of sun-dried vegetables, there is a need to create more awareness of the sun-drying technology, especially among households that did not participate in EatSANE’s TIPs activities.
