Ankle push-off is defined as the phase in which muscle-tendon units about the ankle joint generate a burst of positive power during the step-to-step transition in human walking. The dynamic walking of a biped robot can be effectively realized through ankle push-off. However, how to use ankle push-off to balance the walking speed and energy efficiency of biped robots has not been studied deeply. In this study, the effects of the step length (the inter-leg angle is 40°, 50°, and 60°), torque and timing of ankle push-off on the walking speed and energy efficiency of biped robots were studied. The results show that when the step length is 50°, the push-off torque is 30 N· m and the corresponding push-off timing occurs at 43% of the gait cycle, the simulated robot obtains a highly economical walking gait. The corresponding maximum normalized walking speed is 0.40, and the minimum mechanical cost of transport is 2.25. To acquire a more economical walking gait of biped robots, the amount of ankle push-off and the push-off timing need to be coordinated. The purpose of this study is to provide a reference for the influence of ankle push-off on the motion performance of biped robots.

For the stable and reliable operation of centrifugal pump, the transient flow must be studied and the separation region should be avoided. Three-dimensional, incompressible, steady, and transient flows in a centrifugal pump at specific speed within 74 were numerically studied using shear stress transport k- ω turbulence model, and an improved explicit algebraic Reynolds stress model–rotation-curvature turbulence model was proposed by considering the effects of rotation and curvature in the impeller passages in this work. Steady and transient computations were conducted to compare with the experiments. The comparison of pump hydraulic performance showed that the explicit algebraic Reynolds stress model–rotation-curvature turbulence model was better than the original model, especially between 0.6 Q BEP and 1.2 Q BEP ; the improved model could enhance the head prediction of pump by about 1%–7% than that with the original model. Then, the visualization of the vortex evolution was observed to validate the unsteady simulations. Good agreement was investigated between calculations and visualizations. It is indicated that the explicit algebraic Reynolds stress model–rotation-curvature model can successfully capture the separation flow.

An improved turbulence model for separation flow in a centrifugal pump

An error correction model for ultrasonic gas flowmeter was proposed to explore the potential of an ultrasonic flowmeter for metering gas-liquid stratified and annular flows. The gas and liquid mass flowrates could be obtained provided that the gas quality and physical prosperities were known. A single-path ultrasonic flowmeter was investigated and the error of the apparent volumetric flowrate was considered as mainly resulting from the shrinkage of the gas flow path due to the presence of a liquid phase. Fourteen void fraction models were selected for the stratified and annular flows and evaluated against experimental data. It was demonstrated that the root-mean-square error of the gas mass flowrate can be reduced from 19.0% to below 5% by employing either of Lockhart &amp; Martinelli, Baroczy, Spedding &amp; Chen, or Wallis void fraction models. Lockhart &amp; Martinelli model is recommended due to its higher accuracy, simpler formulation, sounder theoretical support, and stronger immunity to pressure variation. The error correction model proposed in this work provides a basis for developing new combination measurement methods with an ultrasonic flowmeter as one component.

Flow Measurement Model of Ultrasonic Flowmeter for Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Stratified and Annular Flows

In order to improve the bearing capacity of soft actuators, this article presents the development of the rigid-hoop-reinforced (spring or steel hoop) multi-DOF soft actuator. The actuator is composed of a rotary module with spring reinforcement on the silicone rubber-based body and a bending module with steel hoop reinforcement on the body. Compared with fiber-reinforced actuators, the bearing capacities of rigid-hoop-reinforced actuators made of 65Mn spring steel are improved. The radial and the axial bearing capacity for the bending module and the rotary module is raised by 29.6%, 28.2%, 30.6%, 49.6% respectively; under the same pressure, the spring-reinforced interval increases the maximum rotary angle of the rotary module, the steel hoop-reinforced interval increases the maximum bending angle of the bending module; with the same reinforcement type, the bending module with reinforcement interval of 10 mm has good bending characteristics that the bending angle changes with the pressure gently; the lower the hardness of silicone rubber base body, the better the adaptability and flexibility of the actuator, and the higher the hardness, the greater the bearing capacity of the actuator. Due to the above advantages, the rigid-hoop-reinforced multi-DOF soft actuator can be applied to medical devices which need high load-carrying capacity.

Research on performance of rigid-hoop-reinforced multi-DOF soft actuator

With the rapid growth of the new energy vehicle industry, the number of end-of-life power batteries, which serve as the technological core, is also increasing significantly. Unfortunately, this rise in retired power batteries has led to severe environmental pollution and resource wastage. The detection of shell bolts in power batteries has thus become a crucial step in the recycling and disassembly process. To address this issue, this research proposes a detection method for end-of-life power battery shell bolts. Based on market analysis, the target bolt for the retired power battery shell was identified. The bolt images were collected and preprocessed to create a custom dataset on the experimental platform. Four popular object detection algorithms were compared, and the YOLOv8 model is selected to improve with EMA module. The improved YOLOv8 model achieves 98.9% for mAP_0.5, which increases more than 2 percentage points. Based on the repeatability of bolt recognition, this detection method can be used for the identification of bolts in other battery shells, providing a theoretical foundation for promoting the robotic disassembly of battery shells.

The thermal management performance of a commercial vehicle engine compartment is crucial for improving overall vehicle performance and promoting green transportation. In this study, a one-dimensional (1D) and three dimensional (3D) CFD co-simulation method has been proposed for the modeling and simulation of thermal management of a commercial vehicle engine compartment. The steady-state temperature and velocity vector distribution in engine compartment has been obtained through 3D CFD approach. With data exchange between the cooling circuit and air conditioning circuit, the mathematical characterizations of the thermal management performance have been further investigated through 1D simulation and validated using test results. The comparison show that the obtained results for thermal management performance are consistent with test results, validating the accuracy of the co-simulation model. The results indicate an obvious thermal backflow phenomenon in the upper area of the intercooler module, causing a high outlet water temperature of the engine cooler. Thus, a deflector structure for eliminating the thermal backflow problem has been presented, and the heat dissipation effect has been analyzed. The co-simulation results show an improvement in cooling performance that the ATO value of cooling circuit decreased by 2.5% and intercooler constant of air conditioning circuit decreased by 12.1%. The proposed 1D/3D co-simulation method provides a reliable reference for developing the thermal management system of commercial vehicle engine compartment.

Thermal management performance analysis and improvement for a commercial vehicle engine compartment through a 1D/3D co-simulation method

Urban transportation systems, such as Metro de Medellín’s aerial cableways, play a key role in improving city connectivity. This study presents a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of critical mechanical components that connect cable cars to ropeways, specifically focusing on the Connection and Suspension assembly, referred to as the J-H assembly. The primary aim was to identify potential operational vulnerabilities. The analysis follows the BS EN 13796-1:2017 standard, which provides design guidelines for cable car structural components, and evaluates cases 8, 9 and 10 as benchmarks. FEA results indicate safety factors ranging from 1.62 to 2.24, with case 9 exhibiting a 31.3% deviation from the standard’s reference values. Stress concentrations were consistently found at the J-H assembly connection across all cases.

The cutting characteristics observed in machining processes are significantly influenced by a combination of various dynamic parameters as well as the overall machine tool system in use. This paper introduces a cutting force coefficient mining method that considers the impact of tool vibration and machine tool system. Firstly, a basic cutting model was established based on orthogonal cutting. Obtained the cutting force coefficient for orthogonal cutting. Subsequently, the dynamic undeformed chip thickness data was integrated to reflect the influence of tool vibration during the machining process. Additionally, due to the replacement of the machine tool, correction factors have been introduced to consider the impact of the machine tool system. Finally, a comparative analysis was conducted with other methods for calibrating cutting force coefficients. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model has been validated, demonstrating its effectiveness in accurately predicting dynamic cutting forces.

Mining method for cutting force coefficient with the impact of tool vibration and machine tool system

The development of a versatile and reliable robotic arm for agricultural picking is essential for modern farming. This study presents the design of a picking robotic arm inspired by bionics principles. The end-effector features a parallel gripper structure to efficiently pick crops of various shapes and sizes, with finite element simulations confirming its structural rationality. The gripping force is measured by an LDTI-028K PVDF piezoelectric thin-film sensor, adjustable within a crop-safe range to prevent damage. Additionally, a new signal conditioning circuit is proposed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio by amplifying the sensor’s output signal and minimizing noise, addressing the relatively low surface charge produced by the PVDF film under external pressure. Adams simulation analyses show that the end-effector is highly adaptable. Furthermore, picking experiments demonstrate that the robotic arm can reduce costs and lower the attrition rate by approximately 23.2 ± 5% compared to manual picking, while also exhibiting high reliability and stability.

Due to the complexity of analyzing residual stress, which involves numerous cutting parameters encompassing both mechanical and thermal stresses, various modeling and simulation methods, including analytical, numerical, and machine learning approaches have been summarized. An analytical model for predicting 2D orthogonal cutting and 3D milling residual stress is presented based on the cutting mechanism as well as the loading and unloading history of the stress field. The advancement in computational methods has prompted a review of finite element methods and mesh-free methods along with their principles, advantages, disadvantages, and application fields. Furthermore, machine learning models are employed to predict and control cutting residual stress based on data-driven approaches. These include support vector regression machines, artificial neural networks, and gradient boosted trees. A significant challenge for future work lies in addressing multi-scale size cutting residual stresses through hybrid methodologies.
