Groundwater resource in the “Larena Plain” at the western margins of the Southern Main Ethiopian Rift (SMER) was investigated using integrated geophysical techniques—electrical resistivity and magnetic methods. The objective was to assess aquifer depth, extent, and geological controls in the study area. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) was employed to examine and map aquifer depth and lateral extension, while geological structures and lithological contacts influencing groundwater flow and accumulation were identified using magnetic surveys. Two‐stage aquifers were identified: a deeper fractured ignimbrite and a volcanoclastic sediment aquifer covered by shallow weathered ignimbrite. The depths and distributions of these aquifers were mapped, with geological structures generally aligned in the NNE–SSW orientation. Understanding these geological structures and aquifer systems is crucial for effective groundwater management in the “Larena Plain,” providing valuable insights for regional hydrogeological studies.

Jailolo, the capital of West Halmahera Regency, faces earthquake risks due to its proximity to a Jailolo volcano and a double subduction zone in Eastern Indonesia. This study is aimed at investigating the seismic hazard characteristics in Jailolo through the analysis of statistic and signal parameters. Analyzing seismic hazard characteristics in this region is crucial for assessing earthquake risks and understanding how local soil conditions influence ground shaking. Earthquake catalogs from several databases spanning from 1970 to 2018 were utilized. Additionally, 40 locations around Jailolo were surveyed using a short‐period seismometer to gather microtremor data. The earthquake catalogs underwent b value analysis using the maximum likelihood method, while microtremor data were examined for f 0 and A 0 using the horizontal‐to‐vertical spectrum ratio (HVSR) method. V S30 profiles were derived using the H/V curve inversion method. The b value characterizes earthquake size distribution, HVSR evaluates ground properties, especially the shallow subsurface, and V S30 represents the time‐averaged shear wave velocity in the upper 30 m of the Earth’s surface. The findings revealed the average b value around Jailolo is 1.36 with a 15% deviation, categorizing the area as earthquake prone and volcanic. The values of f 0 and A 0 ranged from 0.536 to 2.44 Hz and 8.97 to 21.2, respectively. The results of f 0 and A 0 suggested that the Jailolo area is predominantly characterized by thick sediment. The H/V curve analysis provided a V S30 profile ranging from 109 to 460 m/s, indicating that the area is dominated by sediment consisting of stiff soil, very dense soil, and soft rock. In conclusion, Jailolo is highly prone to earthquakes due to its seismic and volcanic activity, supported by soil characteristics that can amplify seismic waves and increase ground shaking intensity during earthquakes. These findings stress the need for long‐term seismic monitoring and community involvement to mitigate seismic risks.

Characteristics of Earthquake Hazards in Jailolo, West Halmahera, Indonesia: An Analysis of <i>b</i> Values and Site Dynamics

This paper presents spatial distribution, temporal seismotectonics, and return period of earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, using earthquake data and Maximum Likelihood methods. The data used are ISC, USGS/NEIC, and Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (IMCGA) earthquake catalog data for the period of 1918 to 2015. The results show that the a-value ranges from 5.0 to 8.5 and b-value ranges from 0.6 to 1.3. The pattern of spatial distribution of b-value is relatively low corresponding to the low of a-value, which means the high level of stress of rock in the area. The fractal dimension shows that the D value ranges from 1.384 to 1.874. The earthquake that occurred in East Nusa Tenggara Province was dominated by a small magnitude with great seismicity and the fastest return period is in Alor and Timor islands which is 44 days.

Landslide deformations involve approximately all geological materials (natural rocks, soil, artificial fill, or combinations of these materials) and can occur and develop in a large variety of volumes and shapes. The characterization of the material inhomogeneities and their properties, the study of the deformation processes, and the delimitation of boundaries and potential slip surfaces are not simple goals. Since the ‘70s, the international community (mainly geophysicists and lower geologists and geological engineers) has begun to employ, together with other techniques, geophysical methods to characterize and monitor landslides. Both the associated advantages and limitations have been highlighted over the years, and some drawbacks are still open. This review is focused on works of the last twelve years (2007-2018), and the main goal is to analyse the geophysical community efforts toward overcoming the geophysical technique limitations highlighted in the 2007 geophysics and landslide review. To achieve this aim, contrary to previous reviews that analysed the advantages and limitations of each technique using a “technique approach,” the analysis was carried out using a “material landslide approach” on the basis of the more recent landslides classification.

The attenuation of high-frequency seismic waves was investigated in the crust beneath Tbilisi and the surrounding territory by analysing 225 local earthquakes that occurred from 2008 to 2020 and were recorded by eight seismic stations. The quality factors of coda waves <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M1"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>C</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> and direct P and S waves, <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M2"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>P</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> and <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M3"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>S</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math>, were estimated using the single backscattering model and the extended coda normalization method, respectively. The separation of intrinsic quality factors <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M4"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>i</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> from scattering quality factor <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M5"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>SC</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> was fulfilled by Wennerberg’s method. Observed results show that all evaluated attenuation parameters are frequency-dependent in the frequency range of 1-32 Hz and increase with increasing frequency. Coda <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M6"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>C</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> values increase also with increasing lapse time window from 20 s to 50 s and vary from <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M7"><mml:mn>91</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>5</mml:mn></mml:math> at 1.5 Hz to <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M8"><mml:mn>1779</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>108</mml:mn></mml:math> at 24 Hz, respectively. P waves attenuate slightly faster than S waves, and the ratio of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M9"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>S</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>P</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> is more than unity and varies in a range of 1.5-1.8. The intrinsic and scattering quality factors are expressed by the following power laws: <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M10"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>i</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mfenced open="(" close=")"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>77</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>4</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>f</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mfenced open="(" close=")"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>0.930</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>0.046</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:math> and <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M11"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>SC</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:msub><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mfenced open="(" close=")"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>219</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>6</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>f</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mfenced open="(" close=")"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>0.924</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>0.050</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:math>. The results show that <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M12"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>i</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> is close to <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M13"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>C</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math>, but <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M14"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>SC</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> is larger than <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M15"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>i</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math>, which means that intrinsic attenuation has a dominant role compared with the scattering effect. Our results were compared with those obtained in two other seismically active regions of Georgia, as well as with regions of the world. In general, the observed quality factors and their frequency-dependent relationships follow a similar trend, characterizing seismically active regions with complex tectonics. The calculated attenuation parameters characterize the entire earth’s crust under Tbilisi and the surrounding area. The results obtained will be useful in future seismological studies since the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M16"><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi></mml:math> parameters are estimated for the first time for the given region.

Attenuation of Coda and Body Waves for Tbilisi and Surrounding Area, Georgia

Information about potential earthquake sources is a key issue for seismic hazard assessment. This study presents the application of a phenomenological approach based on pattern recognition to determine the possible locations of strong earthquakes in the Bulgarian region. The technique assumes the origin of strong earthquakes in morphostructural nodes formed around the intersections of morphostructural lineaments identified by morphostructural zoning. For the territory of the Bulgaria and neighbouring regions, 178 nodes were defined in this work. The CORA-3 pattern recognition algorithm identified 59 seismogenic nodes analysing a set of geophysical and geological node’s characteristics. The identified seismogenic nodes are capable to generate earthquakes with magnitude equal to or greater than 6 and are located at the boundaries between the largest tectonic domains: Rila, Pirin, and Rhodope orogens; the Serbian-Macedonian massif; and in the Stara Planina belt. The set of characteristic features of seismogenic nodes indicates that the vicinity of potential nodes is characterized by a high contrast of neotectonic movements of the Earth’s crust and the presence of deep heterogeneities in the Earth’s crust. About 40% of the recognized nodes are not associated with any earthquakes, while the rest of the recognized seismogenic nodes are characterized by an area with a radius of 25 km where earthquakes are known to occur. Part of these “non active” seismogenic nodes are close to the historical events with magnitudes higher than 5.5 since the magnitude and location of historical events have large uncertainties. Another part of the seismogenic nodes may slightly change the location due to the uncertainties in morphostructural zonation. Other nodes may indicate unknown historical seismicity or paleoearthquakes. Defined M6+ seismogenic nodes can fill the potential gaps in the recorded seismicity on the territory of Bulgaria, thus to improve the seismic hazard assessment of the studied region.

Potential Locations of Strong Earthquakes in Bulgaria and the Neighbouring Regions

As per the Geothermal Potential Book published by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) in 2017, Pacitan Regency in East Java Province, Indonesia, has the potential for geothermal energy. Two hot spring manifestations, namely, Karangrejo and Tinatar, located in the Arjosari and Punung districts of Pacitan Regency, respectively, have a combined resource of 25 MWe. We acquired ground-gravity data and evaluated gravity anomalies to explore the underlying geological structure in order to understand the geothermal system behind these manifestations. The results of the study show that the gravitational anomaly in the Karangrejo-Tinatar region ranges from 163 to 176 mGal. Additional analysis of the complete Bouguer anomaly (CBA) map, first horizontal derivative (FHD) map, and field observations points to the existence of three NW-SE trending faults. Two of the faults, which are the Karangrejo fault and the Tinatar fault, may be the flow paths for the manifestation of Karangrejo and Tinatar hot springs.
