Rural settlements are dynamic structures, and each historical period is characterised by certain directions of changes in the countryside, visible mainly in demographic processes. Based on an analysis of statistical data for the years 1950–2021, the authors determine those directions of future demographic changes in Polish villages that are causing changes in the rural settlement structure. The authors, using a statistical model, indicate the regions of the country that are at risk of village desertification and identify villages facing permanent population regression. This article presents the changes that took place in the rural settlement structure of Polish villages between 1950 and 2021 and forecasts future changes. The research aims to create a probabilistic projection of the population in Polish villages. Factors influencing the rural population are also discussed. The research is addressed to state and local administrations with the message that they should implement timely and responsible measures to revitalise the countryside and stop the demographic shrinkage leading to the emptying of villages in some regions of Poland.

The paper presents the results of research into the opinions of university students on the causes and consequences of climate change in the context of social inequalities. The main problem of the research was formulated in the following way: How do students (future teachers and future engineers) view the links between climate change and social inequalities? The main aim was to see how students’ opinions differed from one another. The authors wanted to find out how different characteristics affect perceptions of the causal relationship between the climate crisis and social inequalities. The majority of students at both universities chose indirect answers, showing that they are not fully convinced of the strong links between the climate crisis and social inequalities. This shows a need for intensive, multi-faceted measures to help students to recognise the relationships between these two aspects.

The subject of this article is the development aspirations of local communities. The aim of the paper is to assess the diversity of development aspirations of local communities in municipalities representing different development dualisms and to identify the impact of opposing features of each dualism on the aspirations expressed by representatives of these communities. Achieving this objective was accomplished by conducting in-depth interviews in 36 municipalities representing different development dualisms and their features. The results confirmed that the dimensions of dualisms – conditioned by different development factors – are characterised by aspirations unique to local communities representing specific feature of dualism. At the same time, some development aspirations can be considered universal.

Aspirations of local communities in the context of the dualism of the development of Polish municipalities

The concept of the 15-minute city (FMC), though created relatively recently, has quickly become one of the most popular concepts in urban planning. The paper discusses the FMC concept, presenting its evolution from an idea in the public debate to a research concept. The FMC is also presented in relation to other urban planning concepts. The article discusses the assumptions, opportunities and limitations of the FMC. Despite the growing popularity of the concept, it should be remembered that cities are spatial and functional structures that are shaped over a long period of time and show surprising durability (it often being difficult to change or rebuild existing structures); the implementation of this concept is often associated with numerous varied challenges, which are highlighted in this article. Although the assumptions of the concept are very good, it still remains more in the sphere of a concept than of widespread concrete implementation in planning practice

The 15-minute city: assumptions, opportunities and limitations

COVID-19 was a unique event that globally influenced socio-economic systems in many dimensions. One of them was transportation and mobility patterns, especially during lockdown introduced for the sake of public health. Although restrictions were rather universal within each country, cities were characterized by different mobility patterns. The aim of this study was to analyse changes in mobility patterns in response to COVID-19 and define similarities in urban transportation resilience. For this purpose COVID-19 – Community Mobility Reports were used. Results show that work-related mobility was the most influenced in the long term. Bigger cities needed more time to revert to pre-pandemic level. During the first month of lockdown mobility associated with workplaces as well as grocery and pharmacy presented similar decrease. The biggest decrease characterises mobility connected with retail and recreation. Although it met pre-pandemic patterns around the summer 2020, it required almost one more year to reduce fluctuations.
