The Japan Journal of Nursing Science is the official English journal of the Japanese Academy of Nursing Science. In-bed range of motion (ROM) exercise has effects on muscle strength, cardiac parameters and excretion. Abstract Aim This study aimed to develop a detection scale for intimate partner violence (DS‐IPV), excluding physical and sexual violence, and to validate the scale. Methods A cross‐sectional survey was undertaken using an anonymous 26‐item self‐administered questionnaire with volunteer women aged 18–59 residing in one prefecture in Japan. A total of 1,937 responses were obtained, and 1,915 were valid. The responses of the 1,277 women who had a partner at the time were included in the analysis. Statistical analysis examined exploratory/confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency, and construct validity. Results A four‐factor scale with 22 items was extracted for the DS‐IPV. In the confirmatory factor analysis, the indices of fitness supported these results. Prior to the factor analysis, the Kiser‐Mayer‐Olkin measurement (.936) and Bartlett's sphericity test ( p &lt; .001) showed that all samples met the statistical criteria. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was .92 for total score and varied between .70 and .90 for each of the four factors, and internal consistency was confirmed. The following four factors emerged from an oblique factor analysis, with a cumulative variance of 58.1%: “arousing anxiety”; “controlling behavior”; “coercion and threat”; and “daily emotions”. These four factors had a moderate correlation (.23–.48, p &lt; .01) with each other, which indicated construct validity. Confirmatory factor analysis showed the indices of fitness supported these results. Conclusions The DS‐IPV scale, a concise scale to detect and screen for potential intimate partner violence, was developed. The DS‐IPV scale showed good internal consistency and construct validity.

Abstract Aim To clarify the relationship and structure of the factors that influence the outcomes of continuous employment for people with mental illness and examine the necessary support for this. Methods The hypothesis was developed based on previous concept analysis results. To test it, a questionnaire was used comprising 21 items on the ability to continue working, 24 items on basic competencies for independent living, 21 items on workplace environment, and 27 items on outcomes of continuous employment. The study randomly selected 200 organizations in Japan serving as consultation centers for people with mental illness to recruit participants aged 20–59 years old registered at these entities as of April 1, 2022. Goodness of fit was evaluated between the models and the data. Results Responses were received from 296 individuals. The direct effect on the outcome of continuous employment from the basic competencies for independent living was 0.48 and that from the ability to continue working was 0.29, indicating that basic competencies for independent living had a stronger influence on the outcome of continuous employment. Combining the ability to continue working and basic competencies for independent living showed a high path coefficient of 0.56 with workplace environment, indicating a strong influence on the workplace. Conclusions People with mental illnesses, workplace staff, and professionals should work together to foster a supportive workplace environment. Professionals should also keep in mind the potential positive impact that people with mental illnesses can have on workplace dynamics.

Validation of a model for continued employment for general workers with mental illness: A covariance analysis based on evidence from Japan

Abstract Aim This study aimed to analyze the concept of advance care planning (ACP) for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), by systematically clarifying the attributes, antecedents, consequences, surrogate terms, related concepts, and historical transition of the concept. Methods Following Rodgers' method of concept analysis, the academic development of concepts related to ACP for patients with COPD, as well as changes in the concept over time, is comprehensively organized and described. A search formula for relevant literature was created using the two keywords “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” and “advance care planning”. The databases of CENTRAL, PubMed, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Embase, and PsycInfo were searched without limitation by the year of publication and restricted to English and Japanese languages. Results Of the 3433 retrieved articles, 30 peer‐reviewed articles were included in the analysis. Data extraction was conducted to identify concepts relevant to ACP for patients with COPD, resulting in the identification of four antecedents (COPD progression, decline in QOL, attitude toward facing death and dying, and interdisciplinary team approach); four attributes (discussion process, documentation, support for facing death, and dying, holistic approach); and four consequences (dialogical process, improved support of decision‐making, physical impacts, and psychological impacts). Conclusions This conceptual framework, identified through this analysis, shows an evolution from a medical perspective to encompassing humanistic perspectives in addressing patient needs and emphasizes the importance of nursing practices. The elucidated concept characteristics may enhance its application, practice promotion, and interdisciplinary understanding across healthcare professions in the end‐of‐life field.
