Pipeline-induced vibration phenomena caused by waves and currents during the transportation of oil and natural gas pipelines.Multiphysics coupling calculation considering the influence of fluid flow characteristics in ocean tidal flow environment and mechanical properties of pipeline solid structure on vibration characteristics of S-type pipeline. The analysis of the velocity of the fluid domain and the distribution of the stress distribution of the pipeline, combined with the time history and amplitude of the monitoring point and axis of the pipeline, analyzes the flow-induced vibration response characteristics of the S-transport pipeline. The results show that under the cyclic flow of the two-way tidal basin, the velocity field on the deformation side of the pipeline is lower, the stress at the solid support end is higher than that in the riser region, and the time-displacement of the pipeline fluctuates periodically, and the displacement of the pipeline axis increases sharply in the riser pipe section. It exhibits a normal distribution with extreme values at the center of the pipe segment. The maximum single-pass amplitude in the Verticality basin is twice that of the Parallel basin and the maximum amplitude is about 1D.

Research on Flow-induced Vibration Characteristics of Conveying Pipes Under Bidirectional Tidal Flow

While designing the power requirements of a ship, the most important factor to be considered is the ship resistance, or the sea drag forces acting on the ship. It is important to have an estimate of the ship resistance while designing the propulsion system since the power required to overcome the sea drag forces contribute to ‘losses’ in the propulsion system. There are three main methods to calculate ship resistance: Statistical methods like the Holtrop-Mennen (HM) method, numerical analysis or CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, and model testing, i.e. scaled model tests in towing tanks. At the start of the design stage, when only basic ship parameters are available, only statistical models like the HM method can be used. Numerical analysis/ CFD simulations and model tests can be performed only when the complete 3D design of the ship is completed. The present paper aims at predicting the calm water ship resistance using CFD simulations, using the Flow-3D software package. A case study of a roll-on/roll-off passenger (RoPax) ferry was investigated. Ship resistance was calculated at various ship speeds. Since the mesh affects the results in any CFD simulation, multiple meshes were used to check the mesh sensitivity. The results from the simulations were compared with the estimate from the HM method. The results from simulations agreed well with the HM method for low ship speeds. The difference in the results was considerably high compared to the HM method for higher ship speeds. The capability of Flow-3D to perform ship resistance analysis was demonstrated.

A Hybrid RBF has recently been proposed and tested with some scattered data interpolation problems and the results have appeared promising whereas the appearance of the shape parameter remains a difficulty when deploying. This work, therefore, focuses on three objectives; firstly, it is aimed to extend the use of the newly proposed-RBF to application of RBF-collocation method. Secondly, realizing the burden attributed to the lack of information on choosing an optimum shape parameter, the hybrid RBF is then modified where the shape parameter is no longer included. Thirdly, it is to investigate its application/implementation towards solving PDEs particularly those in both linear and non-linear form. It has been found in this work that the new RBF of this HyBrid form with no parameter can well be a good candidate and truly deserves further study with more complex problems.

A Numerical Investigation on a Hybrid-Parameterless Radial Basis Function Applied with a Meshless Method

Open and closed faults, that are highly permeable or impermeable relative to the porous matrix in which they are embedded, show a strong influence on the fluid flow regime. The modelling of such thin structures may face severe problems, as high demands on storage requirement and execution time. Meshes require extremely fine resolution within the thin object and in its vicinity. The problems are much less severe, if the thin objects are represented in a lower dimension than the model domain. The resulting combined 2D/1D or 3D/2D models constitute a multi-physics approach. For basic benchmark problems we examine the accuracy of such mixed dimension approaches. We compare with the full dimensional model and with analytical solutions. Specific focus lies on the construction of streamlines, for which the streamfunction approach and the particle tracing technique are applied. Finally advantages and disadvantages of the various numerical approaches are summarized.

Benchmarking Model Approaches for Thin Structures in a Porous Matrix

In this study, the strengthening effect of the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)&nbsp;sheet&nbsp;was studied. Four groups of specimens were&nbsp;designed, each of which has three specimens. The specimens were&nbsp;strengthened with 0&nbsp;layer of CFRP&nbsp;sheet, one layer of&nbsp;CFRP&nbsp;sheet, two layers of&nbsp;CFRP&nbsp;sheet,&nbsp;and three layers of CFRP sheet, respectively.&nbsp;An experiment was carried out through the third-point loading method. Compared with the unreinforced reinforced concrete (RC) beams, the load of the beams strengthened with CFRP sheet significantly increased. Taking the ultimate load as an example, compared with the RC beams, the RC&nbsp;beams strengthened with one, two and three layers of CFRP&nbsp;sheet&nbsp;increased by 7%, 19%,&nbsp;and 23%, respectively; under the same load level, the mid-span deflection of the beam reduced, and the anti-deformation ability significantly improved.&nbsp;The experimental results show that the CFRP sheet can improve the bearing capacity of beams and can be further applied in practical engineering.

Plasma-surface modification method (PSMM) is an efficient and inexpensive surface processing method for various materials and has generated great interest in the field of biomedical engineering. This paper focuses on the numerous conventional plasma methods and experimental approaches applied to materials research for suitable biomedical applications, including plasma deposition, laser plasma deposition, plasma sputtering and etching, plasma polymerization, plasma spraying, plasma implantation, and so on. The distinctive benefit of plasma modification is its biocompatibility and surface properties can be enhanced on a selective basis while the bulk characteristics of the materials stay unaltered. Existing materials can hence be used and the requirement for new materials may be circumvented thereby reducing the time for the development of novel and efficient biomedical devices.

Plasma-based Surface Modification Applications of Biomaterials – A Review

Aiming at the characteristics of complex structure, strong coupling and different multi-modal safety levels of more electric aircraft starter generator system, a safety analysis method based on the operating process and a multi-modal failure rate calculation method are proposed. This paper analyses the architecture, operating process and modals of more electric aircraft starter generator system and decomposes the system into eight operating modals. Based on the construction of SafetyLab, a domestic safety analysis platform, the structural models and failure rate calculation models of eight modals of starter generator system are established, and the top event failure rate of each modal, the highest transient failure rate and the steady state failure rate of the system are calculated for a complete safety analysis, taking a typical starter generator system as an example. The method proposed in this paper helps to solve the problem of multi-modal failure rate analysis of complex systems with different equipment involved in the operating process. The multi-modal failure rate calculation method proposed in this paper is also applicable to the safety analysis of other multi-modal complex systems.

Multi-modal safety analysis of the more electric aircraft starter generator system

Short-term prediction of liquefied gas concentration is helpful to assisted analysis of storage tank operation status and trend, thereby reducing the risk of accidents. Within the limited space, affected by factors such as complexity, high dimension, strong correlation and weak regularity of storage tank operation data, the existing short-term prediction method of liquefied gas concentration is difficult to ensure the real-time performance and accuracy of prediction results. Therefore, we propose a short-term prediction method of liquefied gas concentration based on mixed intelligence. Firstly, we bring in an Extreme Change Function, and calculate the weighted set kurtosis value of the feature curve to realize feature dimension reduction. Secondly, the Convolutional Neural Network is used to mine the correlation between features and extract effective feature vectors. Meanwhile, we use Long Short-Term Memory Network to learn the change law of the data, so as to obtain the predicted value of liquefied gas concentration. Finally, our method is applied to a real scenario to demonstrate that the short-term prediction method of liquefied gas concentration achieves superior results in prediction accuracy, running speed and stability compared with other methods.

Research on Short-Term Prediction Method of Liquefied Gas Concentration based on Mixed Intelligence

This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the thermal and mechanical properties of Ethylenediamine Graphene Aerogel (EGA) using COMSOL Multiphysics software. The study focuses on understanding the stress distribution and mechanical responses of this material under various conditions. Thermal stress applied to the bottom of a cylindrical structure revealed distinct stress patterns over time and temperature. High-stress regions were noted towards the cylinder's center, suggesting the effects of temperature fluctuations, while the upper surface experienced lower stress. The von Mises stress increased over time, indicating the material's response to heat, particularly near the heat source, and stabilized around 40 minutes, suggesting a new thermal equilibrium. A critical observation was made at a critical region from the cylinder's bottom, where a significant shift in stress patterns and performance characteristics occurred, emphasizing the need to consider these variations in design for safety and functionality. This study highlights the material’s low thermal conductivity and its role in temperature distribution, demonstrating its capability to manage thermal expansion effectively. These properties make the Ethylenediamine Graphene Aerogel suitable for high-temperature applications such as aerospace, automotive, and thermal barrier systems, and open avenues for further applications.

High-Temperature Performance Evaluation of a Novel Graphene-Based Aerogel

This article provided a detailed analysis and discussion on the key points that affect the calibration accuracy of binocular cameras. A planar calibration board based on solid dot marker guided matching was designed, and its superiority over traditional calibration boards through experiments were verified. At the same time, an improved camera calibration method based on two-step RANSAC algorithm was proposed, and the calibration flow of binocular camera was designed for the improved calibration method. This method solves the problem of difficult target size calibration in images and has broad application prospects in the fields of online measurement of image targets and small target image recognition.
