The main purpose of this research was to determine the thermal conductivity of Rammed Earth walls and assess thermal comfort in RE houses, particularly in the hot and dry climate of Yazd city. For this work a thermal conductivity test was performed on a Rammed Earth sample, and the wall's thermal resistance was calculated to evaluate thermal comfort conditions in a Rammed Earth building. Subsequently the building was simulated and were investigated using Fanger's comfort factors. (Fanger factors: Predicted Mean Vote [PMV] and Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied [PPD]). Laboratory tests were performed, and a thermal resistance of 0.49 m2k/W was obtained for a 30 cm Rammed Earth wall. This lead to the consideration of a technical solution by Iran's national building regulations, Article 19. Based on this article, a three-layer wall with intermediate thermal insulation and a thickness of 10 cm for the external walls was designed. In this way, the wall's thermal resistance increased from 0.49 to 2.14 m2k/W, improving comfort conditions compared to walls without thermal insulation. It is recommended to increase the thermal insulation thickness from 10 to 15 cm to achieve fully comfortable conditions. Based on the results, the use of Rammed Earth is not recommended, and it appears that adobe material has historically been the best choice for the hot and dry climate of Iran.

Abstract Roofs that have high solar reflectance and high thermal emittance stay cool in the sun. A roof with lower thermal emittance but exceptionally high solar reflectance can also stay cool in the sun. Substituting a cool roof for a non-cool roof decreases cooling electricity use, cooling power demand and cooling equipment capacity requirements, while slightly increasing heating energy consumption. Cool roofs can also lower the citywide ambient air temperature in summer, slowing ozone formation and increasing human comfort. Provisions for cool roofs in energy efficiency standards can promote the building and climate-appropriate use of cool roofing technologies. Cool-roof requirements are designed to reduce building energy use, while energy-neutral cool-roof credits permit the use of less energy-efficient components (e.g. larger windows) in a building that has energy-saving cool roofs. Both types of measures can reduce the life-cycle cost of a building (initial cost plus lifetime energy cost). Since 1999, several widely used building energy efficiency standards, including ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 90.2, the International Energy Conservation Code and California's Title 24 have adopted cool-roof credits or requirements. This chapter reviews the technical development of cool-roof provisions in the ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 90.2 and California Title 24 Standards, and discusses the treatment of cool roofs in other standards and energy efficiency programmes. The techniques used to develop the ASHRAE and Title 24 cool-roof provisions can be used as models to address cool roofs in building energy efficiency standards worldwide.

Evolution of Cool-Roof Standards in the US

This study examines the relationship between thermal comfort and sleep quality among 417 Malaysian adults via an online survey conducted from November 2019 to April 2020. Participants provided demographic information, thermal comfort, and sleep quality data. The research explores how factors such as air conditioning and pre-sleep behaviours influence individuals' perceptions of thermal comfort and sleep quality. Findings reveal that thermal sensations change during sleep, with respondents reporting a 50% decrease in warmer sensations upon waking compared to before sleep, and a nearly threefold increase in preference for warmer conditions. Sleep quality responses indicate high levels of calmness and satisfaction, with minimal awakenings at an average of 0.9. Air conditioning, available to 60% of respondents, showed limited improvement in perceived sleep quality, with more air-conditioned individuals reporting night awakenings (68%) compared to those without (53%). Pre-sleep behaviours, such as consuming drinks, were associated with lower thermal sensation upon waking, suggesting a potential cooling effect, while taking a shower before sleep correlated with increased overall comfort, potentially enhancing the sleep experience.
