The International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology is an international journal aimed at promoting discussions on a wide range of current clinical and theoretical issues. Submissions may include experimental studies, review articles, and theoretical discussions, as well as research from quantitative and/or qualitative frameworks. Articles may address any area related to communication or swallowing difficulties in children or adults, further exploring issues related to etiology, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, or theoretical frameworks. Articles may include supplementary audio and video files that will be uploaded to the journal's website. At least one special issue on contemporary topics is published annually. Many issues also feature a scientific forum, where one topic is debated by invited international experts.

International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology

In this article, we comment on specific aspects of Peppé (Peppé, 2009). In particular, we address the assessment and treatment of prosody in clinical settings and discuss current theory on neurological models of prosody. We argue that in order for prosodic assessment instruments and treatment programs to be clinical effective, we need assessment instruments that: (1) have a representative normative comparison sample and strong psychometric properties; (2) are based on empirical information regarding the typical sequence of prosodic acquisition and are sensitive to developmental change; (3) meaningfully subcategorize various aspects of prosody; (4) use tasks that have ecological validity; and (5) have clinical properties, such as length and ease of administration, that allow them to become part of standard language assessment batteries. In addition, we argue that current theories of prosody processing in the brain are moving toward network models that involve multiple brain areas and are crucially dependent on cortical communication. The implications of these observations for future research and clinical practice are outlined.

Purpose: For Indo-European languages, "speech banana" is widely used to verify the benefits of hearing aids and cochlear implants. As a standardised "Mandarin speech banana" is not available, clinicians in China typically use a non-Mandarin speech banana. However, as Chinese is logographic and tonal, using a non-Mandarin speech banana is inappropriate. This paper was designed to develop the Mandarin speech banana according to the Mandarin phonetic properties. Method: In the first experiment, 14 participants read aloud the standard Mandarin initials and finals. For each pronounced sound, its formants were measured. The boundary of all formants formed the formant graph (intensity versus frequency). In the second experiment, 20 participants listened to a list of pre-recorded initials and finals that had been filtered with different bandwidths. The minimum bandwidth to recognise a target sound defined its location on the formant graph. Result: The Mandarin speech banana was generated with recognisable initials and finals on the formant graph. Tone affected the shape of the formant graph, especially at low frequencies. Conclusion: Clinicians can use the new M andarin speech banana to counsel patients about what sounds are inaudible to them. Speech training can be implemented based on the unheard sounds in the speech banana.

Body Functions and Body Structures form one component of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Coding of items within these ICF chapters can be useful in speech-language pathology to provide a holistic overview of an individual's condition, but only if this component is considered alongside the other components that make up the ICF. This paper outlines the Body Functions and Body Structures codes that are most relevant to speech-language pathology and discusses the overlap that occurs with the Activities and Participation component. A review of the strengths and limitations of the ICF Body Structures and Body Functions components is also presented.

Let the eyes do the talking: A scoping review of eye-tracking in paediatric communication assessment and intervention

Purpose The aim of this study was to explore whether a fast mapping task embedded in an Android application (FastMApp) is a valid tool to assess referent selection abilities in Spanish-speaking children aged between 18 and 30 months. Traditional assessment tools for lexical development use static quantitative methods that assign children a final score to represent their overall vocabulary level. These methods fail to provide insights into the learning process, despite their potential relevance for clinical and educational purposes.
